This time Russia bound. Here is the plan: fly from Vancouver to Moscow via Frankfurt; take the Trans-Siberian from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar; take the Trans-Mongolian from Ulaanbaatar to Beijing; fly from Beijing to Frankfurt and meet W at the airport; fly from Frankfurt to Nice; eat too much and spend too much money; finally fly from Nice to Vancouver via Frankfurt; Phew! BTW...this page sorts weird...photo is waaaaay down...... read more

Fifteen days before take off ... a quick perusal of what could be in store.... not to be scanned by the faint of heart or anyone that is going to message me that I am walking into Big DooDoo... no pun intended. A woman came to the school, where I am just completing a teaching assignment, flogging a book about sandwich making sponsored by Dempster's and she brought a plastic replica of sh-- as a possible filling???? .... ergo my depiction of what I could be in for is not far off ... or does it just follow through in my chaotic-before-mega-trip-jitters-psyche? These facts have been gleaned while reading the Sudbury Health Unit Travax Report Just a bit of an eyeopener. Canada, U.K. Australia and USA government agencies have contributed to this report. Below find only ... read more

Exchange Student/Daughter Reunion - Miami, Florida, April 2007 We thought we’d use this blog forum to share a summary and photos of our dear foreign daughters with you. As most of you know, we had 5 exchange students live with us in Alaska. Our first was Victoria Sahade (Argentina), who was a Rotary Exchange Student in 1987-88. We say she paved the way for the other four because she was such an exemplary student/roommate. The other four were with us from 1990 - 1992. While traveling in South America in 1988 - 1989 we first met Jaqueline in Guatemala where we were staying for 3 months to learn Spanish. We were traveling together on a bus - for those of you who know Guatemala, you know that they often sit 3 adults to what would be ... read more

Down the coast from both LA and the OC, (about 2.5 hours drive from LA) and only about half an hour outside of Mexico, is San Diego. We loved San Diego - imagine Sydney surrounded by the Harbour etc, but there are Mexican influences everywhere - in all of the buildings plus as we are now very familiar with, the Mexican food. ... read more

The Chinese Musclepower!!! That would be the takeaway for me from the New York - Washington, DC trip... The famous American consumerism of "King Customers" can be seen replaced by the low cost Chinese economic model. "King Customers" as they spend like King and expect being treated like a King has a challenge now. A chinese owned travel group 'eastern travels' was our obvious choice of travel as the fare $35 for return was almost 50% less than that of the nearest option. Greyhound was $80 and Amtrak was $67 one way. We booked the tickets on net much in advance as these cheap tickets exhaust really fast especially on weekends. (however, the tickets are available at bus stop also.) so the customers had a choice now not to be 'the king' in spending. we had ... read more

My time in Phoenix is just about done. Heading over to miami on Sunday to meet up with the boys for the cricket world cup. Pretty pumped about it although you wouldn't know there's a world cup on over here - yet to see any highlights let alone a game. The last couple of weeks over here have been pretty quiet. My flatmate has played a couple of gigs including the tempe arts festival and a launch party for their new cd, which went well. I've included a link at the bottom of the page to their website where you can listen to all their songs (shameless plug). If anyone wants to buy their album let me know - i'll have some copies over in Ireland with me. I know a few of you have ... read more

No, nothing bad is happening. In fact all good. I've been busy all morning at work. Stopped to get a hamburger, or whatever the little lady that serves me calls it, since she doesn't speak English and me no español, and successful used the bank's ATM machine (cajero). Boy, you need to be quick though. It doesn't like to wait on you. Will just kick you out! I was slow the first time trying to make sure whether it was asking me how much I wanted and if it was dollars or pesos. Turns out to be pesos, and I was too slow the second time to get a receipt.. Oh, well. Back to work now. Patt... read more

To begin, why such a long title? Deserves a little explanation. Including enough key words to get captured in google search for 'train travel East Coast West Coast'. ( I have assumed there are and will be travellers like me ) Readers interested only in the travelogue can skip to the 'Preparation' paragraph. Others who have all the time in world can continue reading. Why this assumption? Is it because it is too adventrous or creative for lesser mortals to undertake? No, but there are few prerequisites for one to undertake such a journey. And all of them have to be fulfilled. 1. You have too much time and do not know what to do with it. (I am waiting for my work permit to come from USCIS. This will take 3 months during which i ... read more

Eureka - NatchitochesNatchitoches - EurekaCane River National Historic Area2001 Honda ST1100 SIX RIVERS TOUR ST ADVENTURES The ST Brothers with a couple of Harley-Davidson motorcycles tour the Six Rivers in East TEXAS and Louisiana. The Southeast part of TEXAS is drained by four rivers, the Sabine, Angelina, Neches, and Trinity, they flow through the area covered by the forest timber belt and on through the Big Thicket area to the Gulf of Mexico. This general area has an average annual rainfall of from forty five to fifty inches. With the timbered area and the Big Thicket to retard runoff, these streams, in their lower reaches, maintain a fairly steady flow throughout the year. In Louisiana the Red and the Cane Rivers drain into the Mississippi. Our ... read more
