13/04/07 - 14/04/07 A Dash of Utah As we’d stopped at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley, an English woman we met told us that sunrise at Bryce Canyon was so beautiful that it had made her weep. Leaving Las Vegas, it was a slight detour North and would take us into an extra State where the book of Mormon, not the Gilead Bible makes bedside reading - Utah. To cause as much confusion as possible, seemed to be the goal of whoever named the viewpoints in Bryce Canyon National Park. The best place to watch sunset is at Sunrise Point and the best place to watch sunrise is at Bryce Point and Sunset point is no good for either or was it that the best place to watch sunrise is at Bryce point and the best ... read more

Except for Monday and Tuesday when I was frantically finishing some essays that were due on Wednesday, it was a pretty fun week. We took salsa dance lessons in the afternoons, and Tuesday and Thursday we didn’t have anthropology class because our poor professor is still recovering from typhoid fever. Thursday we finished up salsa lessons. The professor was an amazing dancer, and we had lots of fun but not surprisingly, I am still horrible at it. However, we are hoping to show off some of what we learned at a salsa club sometime in the near future… Friday we took an excursion to the Valle de Apoala (Valley of Apoala), a town of about 150 people in the mountains of the Mixteca Alta (Meesh-teck-ah All-tah). It was a long, uncomfortable van ride. About 2/3 ... read more

North America » United States » Michigan » Traverse City April 14th 2007

With a population of approximately 15,000 people Traverse City is alternately referred to by its inhabitants as a town, or sometimes an very small city. The comparison is understandable when you consider that 150 miles south of it is Grand Rapids whose population is 197,000, and just south but much closer to it, is the city of Cadillac with a population of 10,000. So, Traverse City is a town in comparison to Grand Rapids, but feels a little more city-like than Cadillac. But any city whose major access is provided by highways that run right through it is, in this day and age, a town. Traverse City is part of Grand Traverse county whose population is 81,000. The fact that the biggest city in the county (Traverse) supplies only 12% of its population speaks to ... read more

This is pretty much the route we traveled on the way down and back. Unfortunately the Google map feature does not label any of the visited cities in the Baja. You can manipulate the map with the utilities at the left of the map (to enlarge the map or minimize it) Check the route here... read more

Getting back to Toronto was pretty interesting. It took a bit of getting used to after being away for so long. I arrived at 6 in the morning, post 6 hours on the bus, still reasonably hung over from the night before. My last night in Quebec had been beer with two Quebecois in a very French bar with very French music and lots of drinking. I had been to this bar over the summer and it was wicked to be there again, in this quaint little place that is located down an alley off an alley from a street in a very European looking alley way, and sitting there in the warm with a beer and the snow whipping around outside. I have been here for two months and in the two months I slept ... read more

Hey Everyone! Welcome to the blog chronicling my travels to Thailand and beyond. I guess it all starts with the Bon Voyage Party, in NYC on April 14th. It was such a blast! Lotsa people showed up to party and wish Jordan and I well. If you were there, you know all about it. If you weren't, you missed a great time! It was at Boss Tweed's on the Lower East Side. It started when Mom, Caitlin, Dad, Rocco and I took Metro North down. We were picked up by Steve Devita on Vanderbilt Avenue, and all 6 of us crammed into his beautiful new Acura in front of a cop and a US Soldier. We drove down to dinner and met up with my sis Mary, had a rushed dinner and went down to ... read more

I have been in Mexico City for 4 days and it is a great place. Basically so much to see just by walking around. The food is great, the people are extremely friendly. The weather has been super and I am staying a really nice hostel for 100 pesos a night (10 dollars). They actuallu keep the place nice and clean and it smells pretty good too. Overall not the idea of Mexico City that I had in mind. Went to the pyramids today, quite impressive. Tonight it will be luche libre (mexican wrestling) with my British buddy Marc. Then I will head to Oaxaca tomorrow. I have only had one little bout of montezumas revenge, so thats good. Much more later.... read more

So much preparation! Megan is overpacking, as usual, and has decided to downsize her first aid kit. Megan is speaking in third person because she spends too much time on Facebook. Sorry, Kristi, no room for you in my bag. Last week of exams, almost there!... read more

Orlando was surprisingly great. We had next to no interest in amusment parks, thus we were far from the regular Orlando tourists. Our main reason for going there in the first place was because it is an ideal location for day trips around Florida, but we didn't really want anything to do with Orlando itself. Then we met our couchsurfing hosts, Jeff, and Jason. These guys lived in an amazing little neighborhood tucked away in Winter Park where you would never expect it. There was spanish moss hanging from the Oaks covering the brick road. They were right next to a lake, and they were the coolest, rad-est, most wickedist hosts. Jeff was a super mellow fellow who is currently prepping to go on a bicycle trip across the states, building houses with Habitat for ... read more
