Motorhome News from North America 45 29th June 2007 Home at last. Immense shocks awaited our return to England with the realisation that our memories of this land had not faded nor our worst fears abated with time. Traffic swarmed the M25 from Heathrow, aggressive and impatient, travelling at high speeds we were unaccustomed to, too many people, hurrying, scurrying, in too small a space, all bound with the frustration of congestion and too few hours in each day for both work and play. Out on the fringes of London’s arteries, traffic slowed a knot or two, the roads narrowed perceptibly and the lush green of England’s new summer filled the air with its own brand of beauty: of broad-leaf trees, voluptuous hedges bounding tiny fields, small compact towns and villages, houses of brick and tile, ... read more

If you have a chance to attend the Swift Current Kite Festival; our family would highly recommend it. Owen has been asking for the past couple of years and we have always been tied up with other commitments. With our departure from Eastend being relatively immanent and Owen's birthday coming up we decided to surprise Owen by taking him, his brother and his three best friends to the kite festival to celebrate his birthday. The festival was awesome! We saw some amazing aerial displays, as one-band, a mentalist(magician), and the boys made their own kites. One really neat thing that happened at the mentalist show was the trick where he tears a newspaper into many pieces and then turns it back into a whole newspaper. I know rather standard stuff...BUT...the newspaper was the Saskatoon Planet and ... read more

Day Two, Part One, Friday, June 29, 2007 Woke up and left Hays around 10:30ish after having sandwiches for breakfast. The only difference today in regards to the view is that it is sunny, other than that it is still flat farmland. Today seems more beautiful though, maybe because we are getting used to the view? I do like mountains though and there is not much water around either… Much easier to tell the difference between cattle and bales of hay in the sun too! Thank you for the clarification Susan! Elan: “We couldn’t have done it without you Aunt Susan!” ☺ Also bales of hay are brown while the cattle are sometimes brown but often white or black! Lots of fields of corn everywhere. We read that Interstate 70 is Main Street, USA. It goes ... read more

I have always been a fan of Pop Tarts, but in America, I found the best pop tarts, ever. Fudge Sundae, or something like that. Marshmallow flavour, Sprinkles and fudgey goodness. I buy 2 boxes in LA (Target, of corse), eat one box, get halfway through the second box... then one morning I awake to find in the kitchen cupboard... ants... in my pop tarts. They've eaten their way trough the foil of the Pop Tart too, making them unedible. How annoyed am I? And I find out that they don't sell this flavour in Hawaii... ARGHGHGG!!! I blame Karma. Did I write about my atomizer? The perfume thing u can take around in your bag and refill with all yur favourite scents? Well I took my empty atomizer into a perfume shop and filled it ... read more

...when they offer blackjack in a smoky truck stop along with showers and laundry! Well, that is my stop in Sparks, NV. Driving Across Nevada My drive across Nevada was as expected: long and barren along Highway 80. I stopped in Winnemucca for dinner at the Red Lion Hotel and moseyed on. My One Night After only one In-N-Out stop for fries, I ended up just southeast of Elko (on the NE corner of NV) at Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Wilderness, billed as the Yosemite of Nevada, in the Ruby Mountains. It lived up to the billing on a smaller scale than Yosemite with a glacier-cut canyon, wildflowers, excellent hiking, and beautiful lakes. I hiked the 4 miles over the 10k foot Liberty Pass in the Ruby Wilderness and Liberty Lake, which was the striking ... read more

Day 7 was the last full day of our vacation before we start travelling home. I was determined to get to see the JFK Museum (on the inside today). Also, while looking through the Kids on the Cape travel magazine (found in local store foyers) I came across a coupon for the HyLine Harbor Sightseeing Cruise. Usually the cost of the cruise is $14/adults and $7/children. The coupon said kids ride free and $2 off adult admission. With three kids, I thought that was a great deal. So even though I hadn't originally planned on doing this excursion, I decided to fit it in. The big draw to the Harbor Sightseeing Cruise is it's really your best shot of seeing the Kennedy Compound if that sort of thing interests you. Their home is secluded and can't ... read more

North America » Canada » Northwest Territories » Inuvik June 29th 2007

Yesterday I arrived in Inuvik, NWT! The land of the midnight sun:) For those of you who do not know where that is, look at a map, you will find me at the top of the world! Inuvik is 2 degrees north of the Arctic Circle on the Mackenzie River Delta. The environment as somewhere between the treeless tundra and the northern boreal forest, and as I saw from the flight in, the is in the middle of an incredible maze of lakes and streams of the Delta. Inuvik means "place of people" and that is what it is in this area. It is also the homeland of the Inuvialuit and Gwich'in first Nations people and a wide variety of other aboriginal and non-aboriginal people. I have not seen very much wildlife up here yet ... read more

Expected an uneventful long drive over to Rapid City to pick Mark up from the airport, but yet again surprised by some of the sights in between. Funniest moment of the day caused by about 400 cows and 8/9 Cowboys herding them down the road and holding up traffic for about 10 mins, finally one of these guys on the horses beckons the cars through, so we had to inch through the cows very slowly almost felt like giving one of the cows a pat on the way through, but didn't really ant to wind the window down incase I got a pat of my own (all groan now). ... read more

We have only been in Alaska for one night/ two days and already have so many great experiences/ stories. First being we finished driving the Alaska highway which was a very fun and beautiful section of the trip. Were now in Fairbanks and absolutly love it!!!! The people have been more than hospitable. The first stop we made was to the local dog park where we met some folks that grew up in the Fort Collins area (just north of Denver on I-25). They gave us their cell numbers and assured us they were more than willing to help show us around. This first encounter with locals was really a tell tale sign of the red carpet treatment we were about to receive. After dinner, by the fire, the man in the site next to ... read more
