Katherine here--We knew we were in trouble when Phil asked what shape we were in when we arrived at 11:30pm in the La Guardia airport. Something told us we weren't headed straight home. True to his character, he had a plan...and a 16 ounce cup of coffee right before we arrived. He took us onto the Triborough Bridge to Manhattan starting in Spanish Harlem and turned onto Park Avenue. We drove all the way to Broadway to see the best place to be on a Friday in the middle of the night...Times Square. At about Broadway and 45th he told us to get out of the car and walk down Broadway to 42nd and cut across to Eighth where he would meet us. All of this at a little after midnight and right off the ... read more

Today I went up to the Wild Basin area where Robbi and her parents are staying for the summer. Her dad is retired but he is a seasonal park employee and works with the water in the national parks. The whole family is spending the summer in a cabin inside the park. It is absolutely amazing at their place, all you have to do is walk out the front door and you're ready to hike around the park. We were going to try to get to Calypso Cascades before Robbi had to go to work but we didn't quite make it there. Apparently we were so excited to get moving that we did a rather poor job of reading the signs. Instead of taking the path to Copeland falls that would lead to ... read more

Friday June 29, 2007 We checked out of the campground by 7:15 am on a cool (53 degrees) cloudy morning. and headed to Moraine Lake which is not far from Lake Louise. When we get to a parking lot early there’s no problem finding a spot for CT. There are A LOT of RV’s in Banff (mostly rented). Moraine Lake is really beautiful. The sun peaked out from the clouds for just a few minutes so the color came out. The mountains framing the deep aqua lake make the scene outstanding. The geology of the lake is interesting since a large rock pile at one end of the lake reveals the history of the area. Conveniently placed markers explain the geological events that took place. Much of the area was under an ocean at one ... read more

Hey finally photos!! only took me long enough to figure out how to get them on here. Please go back a couple of entries and have a look as ive divided the photos of New York between the last two. So arrived in Boston on Mon 25th, on the Fungwa Bus from Chinatown, Ny only $15 so a bargain. Took 4 hours but seemed to be here in no time. Have to ditch some stuff from this backpack of mine, my back was killing me by the time i got to the hostel, after two subway rides and a lot of walking, so ill be leaving some stuff behind in Boston. Dont ask me what though!! My first impressions of Boston were good, probably because i came from New York!! You can walk down the ... read more

It's been a week now since we were in this beautiful area of BC just west of the Alberta border. Coming south-west from Jasper on hwy 16 you come first to Mt Robson (the highest mountain in BC.) The first shot with the purple (lupine?) in the foreground and the mountain in the back is taken from the field behind the Mt Robson info centre. The mountain in the shot is Mt Robson. From Hwy 16 you turn onto hwy 6 which brings you to Clearwater, directly below Wells Grey Provincial Park. Before even reaching the park there is about 40 km of road. 12k up the road there is an unassuming turnoff for Spahat Falls. The falls are just a 5minute walk from the parking lot and well worth it! Spectacular! I've only chosen ... read more

The tastes San Francisco North America » United States » California » San Francisco » Pacifica By RayeRayeJune 28th 2007 Some say I do not eat that often, and this is true. One of the places I enjoy eating at is in San Francisco. It just has the tastiest, most interesting cuisine and if you delve into a hole in the wall somewhere you just might find and inexpensive gem. Yesterday I did and it was Yummy!!! They had a chalkboard menu with tea and cakes. Off the menu I ordered homemade mac and ... read more

Today is the halfway point! Only 10 days left and both of us are still alive and talking to one another. It’s been a good trip so far and hopefully the rest of the trip continues the same way. On a side note, Chris woke up in the foulest of moods, due to a lack of food last night, however it quickly faded once we found some nourishment. We woke up and called Chris Olsen, who happens to live in town, to hang out with for the day. We’d already decided that we’d try some sushi before we left so he recommended we try Broadway Sreet (he didn’t come with since he’s not a fan). Sushi was amazing. Fish melted in the mouth. Excellent. I don’t know if we’ll be able to eat Ontario Sushi again. ... read more

Sorry for the late entry, but it took us a while to get around to it. This is a family blog (which is why we are able to write a segment), and we expect some if not all of you to at least LOOK at it. This is a great tool to help us keep in touch with the intrepid travellers in Tanzania. Trust us, it really helps to share some words and photos when you're away for a long time. For non-family members who haven't yet read the profile, Bruce and Gerry Melville are retired teachers headed to Dodoma, Tanzania. They intend to volunteer as teachers for one, maybe two years. It is a very big step in their lives; we all support them and send them off with our well wishes. For this ... read more

Perhaps my musical selection as I write is a sign of a sort of unconscious nostalgia for Mexico, which we're sailing away from and towards new and certainly unexpected adventures in Panama. Silvestre Revueltas' bold orchestral work La Noche de los Mayas is a must-listen for the entire human race, and oddly enough, I recognized strains of it in one of the exhibit halls at Mexico City's most famous museum, the Museo Nacional de (la?) Antropología played over the sound system there. Right country, but wrong time period, as we were still a millennium or so away from the bulk of the artifacts from the Maya in the museum's holdings. *Note - not as many photos as I would like to include...upload times are quite slow, but I tried to pick the best/most interesting!* We ... read more
