Went to the 2nd largest mall in the world today - this mall had everything - an ice skating rink, bowling alley, huge water park (Keegan would have loved it), dophlin show, amusement park (with roller coasters), Imax theatre, hotel, and yes, even a huge casino (Alvin made a contribution to the Canadian economy). Keegan, we even bought your birthday present - sorry you have to wait until Dec 1st!! Glenna, I took pictures just for you - but guess what, I couldn't remember how to download pictures (sorry Kim - should have practiced more)... We stayed two nights in this neat town - campground is the "Rainbow Campground" - Alvin is the only "strange" one here!! We will be in Dawson Creek tomorrow night - the beginning of the Alaska highway! Having a grand time ... read more

Finally escaped the hell that is Chicago. Driving down Highway 55, 73 miles per hour, southbound, mile marker 222. Familiar farm houses and knee high corn line either side of the highway and compels us both to question why either of us dared to move to a major city! Day is fading into night, nearly a full moon in the southeastern sky, Mississippi All Stars are keeping Em awake as she drives. Headed to St. Genevieve to visit with Ed, Holly and the girls and collect seeds at the Park. It's good to have friends in high places; Ed is blocking off a camp spot for us and letting us in the Park late! Sweet. ... read more

Zero Day Events, Good Food and Rest. Got up early and CC stayed in bed to rest. Went out to breakfast with the other hikers and Johnny. He makes three runs a day to town - breakfast, lunch and supper. He will run you by the post office, the store or where ever else you might need to go. Erwin, TN is quite spread out and his hostel is on one far end. We stayed at the Waffle House until 9AM when the Post Office opened, then he drove by there on the way home. Our box was there waiting all in tact. Got back to the hostel and got in trouble for not bringing CC a sweet roll. Laundry was done then it was lunch time. A group of 13 men from "Kingsway Church" in ... read more

We were up about 7AM packing things and making breakfast. Had to wait until 8 for Johnny to come in so I could settle our bill. We also needed to make a call to Micki about our next re-supply box. Managed to get all that done and was ready to hit the trail, and in walks Earl! He had rested and ate well and spent the night at the hostel. Walked eight miles to the shelter the next day, 12 the day after and had done 4.2 miles this morning into town. He was in fine shape and spirits. After cleaning up he was headed back home to NC. Why do they put all the towns at the bottom of such big mountains? Erwin, elev 1,700'. High Rocks, 4,180' all we seemed to do today ... read more

Hola! So I officially have four days left until I become an international traveler! Aside from the 8 hour plane ride, I am SO EXCITED and ready to go. Joann Walker is my roomate (I know, I'm super lucky right!) and we will be living in the heart of Salamanca. I just wanted to create this little blog so that all of my friends and family can see what I'm up too if they get bored and want to know haha. I will miss you all, but it's only for a month and before you know it I will be back. That is of course if I don't meet a prince or something... (Just kidding Mom) Love you all! Alli ... read more

Here is the town of Toulon, Illinois as it appeared in 1925. According to my second cousin Cay “there are only 1,400 people honey: it hasn’t changed all that much.” When I tell people that I am leaving the foothills of California to spend a week in Illinois in July, the reaction is pretty universal: “Are you crazy? Do you know how hot/humid/big the bugs are there?” Cay assures me that there are paved streets, automobiles, air conditioning, and “ we even have indoor plumbing!” ... read more

I shouldn't wait so long to do these journals. Here I sit three days after the fact trying to remember what happened. When we got up CC recommended that we have a cold breakfast of granola bars and wait until we make the next shelter for our oatmeal. This would give me drinking water climbing "Little Bald" as the morning was warm. The next shelter with water was about 3.5 miles away taking us around one and a half hours. We chugged up the mountain and arrived on schedule about 9:45AM. We found the water without any problems (we had to walk over it) and tanked up. We sat and had a leisurely late breakfast then hit the trail with water a plenty. We started up Big Bald, a 416' climb up to 5,516'. CC ... read more

Good Morning, It's 7:30 a.m. in Whitchurch, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, UK, and I see a patch of blue in the sky - that is not something that has been prevalent at all during our trip. My gosh, it has rained - muich more than normal. Actually, we've been told that it is the wettest June on record. We certainly know how to pick a week in England! Added to the wet are the low temperatures. Yesterday, I don't think we reached 60. Doubt if we'll be using our swimsuits anytime soon. So glad I have all these sleeveless tops and lightweight t-shirts. Thankfully, I packed one sweatshirt and have a light sweater. My raincoat is my constant companion. While we haven't been even close to a sweatshirt or t-shirt store (if you can imagine we've hardly been ... read more
