I participated in the Ridin’ the Rockies HOG Touring Rally that was held June 25-28, 2007. The plan for the week was to spend some time with my cousins before the rally started then take the long way home after the rally. I rode my 2005 833 Sportster from KC to the rally and back home. The following is a ride report of the ride. It is divided in to parts because of the pictures. Didn’t sleep well last night. My neighbor, which I think is one of the asphalt paving guys that are living in the hotel, has his music loud and I couldn’t get to sleep, then I wake up at midnight and I am burning up hot. I wake up again at 3AM I am freezing. I have a headache and can not ... read more

It wasn't at the top of the empire state building. It wasn't at the state of liberty. It wasn't even at the diner with the huge burger that outweighed my head. NO...The first time we felt like proper americans was in the jam packed, sweltering yankees stadium. As soon as we heard the shouts "HOT DOGS, GET YOUR HOT DOGS" it hit us... We had arrived in the US of A. I always thought baseball was a bit of a stupid game. Mostly because I don't normally have the foggiest whats going on at the obscure hour of day channel five choose to show it. This blog will be edited later... ... read more

The journey is finally underway! We had a limo service (a mini-van actually) drive us to the airport in DC. We left Reagan National this afternoon - about 45 minutes late of course. Flight to JFK was smooth and quick. JFK is a really big facility - took us a while to get luggage - quite a hike to the baggage area. Ian called us and said he would meet us at the Airtrain (the JFK shuttle train between terminals) station. We all took the shuttle bus to the hotel and had dinner together. Great to see him and catch up on his life in NYC - he is doing very well. There are severe thunderstorms in the NYC area this evening. Lots of power outages, flooding and plane delays. Glad we arrived ealier in the ... read more

It's the third day of our vacation and today's agenda was the Grand Teton National Park. A little history...the Grand Teton Range is made up of a series of jagged topped mountain peaks. There are no obstructions to seeing the Grand Tetons because the area around them is incredibly flat. The tallest mountain/peak is the Grand Teton at 13,770 feet with the Middle Teton at 12,804 feet, Mount Owen at 12,928 feet, South Teton at 12,514 feet and several other smaller mountains. Grand Teton National Park also contains Jenny Lake and Jackson Lake which are crystal clear lakes. So beautiful. We started out our morning entering the park off Teton Village and were surprised to come across two moose (cow and bull) enjoying an early morning water and snack. Even from a distance they were huge. ... read more

June 28, 2007 Washington DC So, lucky us! We spent the whole day at Dulles! Timmo dropped us off at 10:00ish, and when checking us in and answering our questions about tight connections, the American Airlines attendant made a smart decision and put us on a direct flight to Madrid from DC. Domestic flights were packed due to bad weather on Wednesday! Even though it was scheduled to leave at 6:00 ish, we chose to play it safe and stay at the airport. Besides, our cell phones were at Boo´s house, and OF COURSE we don´t have her number memorized. We had coffee at Starbuck´s for Ross´s sake, and hung out. Played Quiddler, wrote in journals, did crosswords and sudoku, etc. Once we got to our gate, we discovered that there was a 1 hour delay, ... read more

After we finished touring the Grand Teton National Park, we headed back over to the Teton Village in Jackson Hole for the gondola ride. During the summer months, you can ride the gondola up over 3,000 feet to reach 9,095 feet above sea level. You can also ride the teewinot chairlift up about 400 feet. We really enjoyed both rides. The gondola gave us the best views of Jackson and the Snake River Valley but the teewinot was a fun and relaxing open air ride. We also saw a bunch of people palying disc golf down the mountain as well as mountain biking down. Most of the mountain bikers use the teewinot to take their bikes up and then ride down. My nephew really enjoyed the teewinot so we rode that a couple times. It was ... read more

June 26, 2007-June 27, 2007 Arrived at the ANC airport in good time. Though we did not pay attention to which terminal, north or south. Went to south first and of course we had to go back to the north one for Continental. More signs would have been nice. Took advantage of curbside baggage check in which was rather nice. Once I got in the airport there were many people in the building. Stood in line for a bit before getting through, had to put gels, pastes and liquids into my small ziploc while standing in line, forgot to do that at home. Now I'm waiting with so many people, so many in fact we are sitting on the floor lining the hallway. All seats are taken. I wonder where people are all headed? I suppose ... read more

Fall Down Go Boom! Thursday, 28 June 2007 Today Bob & Panna brought me to back to Fort Qu’Appelle, where I was hoping to locate a fairly long stretch of the Trans Canada Trail. Both yesterday & again today I’d inquired at the local tourist information centre to see if the folks there (volunteers, I think) knew where I could find its start - usually it’s pretty well marked once you find it. Unfortunately the couple there, although nice, knew nothing about the trail. At least this morning I had with me a map which showed it, just didn’t indicate the names of the streets. Using the map we were directed to a small road on the east side of town. But if the trail was there, it was going straight up a long steep hill, ... read more

Woke up to the smell of the fire from yesterday and for the first 10 miles into the park was driving in 'fog' caused by the smoke. Yellowstone itself is another beautiful place, it doesn't carry the wow factor that Yosemite did and Old Faithful was a little disappointing as to be honest I've probably had better eruptions farting in the bath, but still nice to see. Some of the views however, as you will see are spectacular. Tomorrow pick Mark up from Rapid City airport and then off to Deadwood, the resting place of Wild Bill Hickok. ... read more

With the prospect of not seeing one another for 4 weeks and my soon to be incarceration into a 5 week training schedule, saw us take the long way to Calgary. I needed to be in Calgary for July 3rd to start my training with Westjet, so we throw in a mini road trip. We left early on Thursday morning and drove to Kamploops in the BC Interior and then up past Mount Robson and into Jasper National Park. We found a nice room to kip in for the night and went out for some dinner. The next day we woke to sun. A late brunch of a greasy fry up meant we had fuel for the day ahead. We wandered around Jasper for an hour and then the clouds rolled in - doh!!! Just in ... read more
