Day 35, Thursday 28 June 2007 - Palenque to Merida, travel day. Not a whole lot to report today. We had a 9 hour bus trip from Palenque to Merida. Should have only been 8 hours, but the heavy rain and lightening delayed us by an hour. Also made it a bit uncomfortable for some people on the bus, as the bus leaked badly!!! Still, we managed ok. The only excitement on the trip was being stopped on the boarder by the army. They stop all travellers and take you and all your stuff off the bus and search your bags. You´re not allowed to take photos of them, so the only ones I´ve got were snuck through the windows of the bus! They are looking for any artefacts and luckily didn´t find any on ... read more

We left the hotel at 8am, and after a rest stop, we arrived at the Tulum ruins a bit after 11am. After Lisa got our tickets and my video pass for a fee of 35 Pesos, we had about an hour and a half to stroll around the ruins of Tulum and the gift shops before we'd have to reboard the bus for our lunch stop. Tulum wasn't as large as Tikal or as elaborate as Copan, but it had it's own beauty being on the ocean and of course, the iguanas! The buildings were fairly simple and the site wasn't very large, so we had little problem seeing pretty much the whole thing in the time allotted. You can swim in a small lagoon right there at the ruins, but it was fairly crowded ... read more

Thursday, June 28, 2007 We were in the Lake Louise parking lot by 7:45 am getting ready for the hike of the day. This was a recommended hike and it was a doozy! Frank went to the very end of the trail so he walked about 9.5 miles and climbed about 2100 Ft. I stopped at the tea house on the trail so it was 7.75 miles for me and about 1500 Ft. The hike followed the lake, went through a spruce forest, then went up a ridge and followed the glacier till (debris-mostly rocks). We saw snow on the path and there were many glacier melt waterfalls on the way. The day was overcast, but it wasn’t cold or windy. So it was comfortable, but the photo colors weren’t great. When we had almost ... read more

We got off work early today because the premier (think: governor) is coming. The guys had to get the auditorium cleaned up, and we sure can’t work if they’re not! He’s coming for graduation (more commonly known as grad up here...grad is not the person, but the ceremony), but also to check up on some grant requests. It’s interesting to see all the preparations that are made for this. Bob and I went golfing this afternoon, and then drove to Red Deer to look around. ... read more

For those that know Anne and I, we love our 4 wheel drives. Wouldn't be in anything else. Using it to actually go driving in a forest, utilizing the properties of a 4 wheel drive is, however, foreign to us. This is until now! With the help of Ian, we took the Jeep up into one of the many trails around Fernie, and got the truck muddy. Ian shared with me the subtleties of 4WDing and showed us some spectacular scenery...... read more

we left chico last night nearing midnight. with masterful arrangement our smart little party neatly tucked a months supply of clothes, gear, and five bodies ranging from slight to handsomely substantial into a fifteen passenger van. the drive stretched all night, and we found ourselves, some ten largely sleepless hours later, outside the skull valley gas station. these pictures occured. we smiled. the current band just sang something about their sweetheart's silky smile. tonight we plan to search for a pleasant salt lake city field willing to politely embrace our haggard sleeping bags and weary bodies. ... read more

Hi from LAX - that's the airport as I'm not bothering with Los Angeles proper. Tour finished. Generally very good and interesting but didn't realise a bus tour would mean drop and pick up at every, actual, single door and no walking would be required. Next time must book extreme level of adventure travel! Saw a Redwood forest and a treeup close - but no time for a walk. Today was spent having a quick squiz at Santa Barbara - very horsey/grand ranches/palm trees and then a few hours at the Ronald Reagn Library and Museum. Unexpectedely fascintating and for me as a Watergate buff was the plane Airforce 1 - used for 7 presidents including Nixon. (sorry for typos bloody pc - and i cant work out how to change the command) Anyway - The ... read more

Amidst all the hustle and bustle of planning, alas, we have made some of our reservations, but have yet to still do one very important thing: PACK. Ha. I have been blogging on this very subject, yet every time I stress the importance of packing to my husband, or remind myself, I find ....something else to do. These things to do are not necessary for our trip. I usually end up unpacking a new box or find something to re-organize around the house. :) Ah, the joys of procrastination. On Monday, Chet and I had a lovely breakfast at Egg's N Things in Ventura. There is something to be said about sitting in a little breakfast nook restaurant, drinking house coffee, eating Eggs Benedict and finalizing all the places we would like to visit. Somehow ... read more

Last night I crawled into bed when the sky darkened and fell fast asleep, exhausted from the hike I took earlier. I was deep in sleep when I heard voices shouting "Get out bear!" "Go on Bear". I was in a bit of a daze and thought it was some drunked foolish youth. The voices were nearing my canvas type thing I was sleeping in. I realized that they actually were shooing away a bear, then I heard a shot and then a loud bang with an illuminating light that accompanied it. It was a bit scary and I felt bad for the bear (I just think they scared it). Of course at that moment I "really" had to pee, so I ran to the bathroom and went before the bear returned. In the morning ... read more

I am leaving for Madrid tomorrow. If you know me, chances are I've spoken to you about how utterly unprepared I am for this trip. I will be out of the country for five weeks. How many outfits do I have? About four. This is not good. Today is shopping day. Needless to say, I feel like I'm caving. Because shopping for Madrid means I'm going to be in Madrid very soon. It's all denial, all of it. And denial is so unnecessary. I don't have much all to say here. There are a lot of things going on in my head (as is painfully obvious by my clunky, rambling title), only a few of which might have to do with leaving. Or, maybe they all have to do with leaving, but my fear is just ... read more
