Today we leave. Thomas Transportation arrives this afternoon bring a student from Landmark, picking me up and then Mike to head to Boston. Then the overnight flight to Shannon airport. I'm about done packing, but have a lot of nervous energy. I hope to get a bike ride in this morning (and weed my garden) before a long day and night of travel. I have created an earlier entry as a trial to this blog, but it hasn't shown. So I hope that I am using it correctly (I also spent several hours with Mike this week working on the course website). This technology stuff can eat up a lot of time. Anyway, let see if this blog can do it's stuff. I am sending the URL out to friends and family, and hope to keep ... read more

I have been back in San Diego for 3 days, and the culture shock is wearing off. I was sad to think that this amazing experience had come to an end, that it was all over. Then a Camino friend of mine reminded me of what was said at the Pilgrims mass in Santiago. The priest told us "Sanitago is the end of the trail for you, but not the end of your journey. Once you have started, it goes on for the rest of your lives. Everyday you walk the path of your Camino." I had forgotten, that the Camino was only the outward expression of an inward journey. Since then, I have been happy to be back and each day I am living the lessons I learned, and decisions I made on the ... read more

Happy Hollow Farm Made it to Eric’s farm in Jamestown, Missouri. 80 acres of forest and 10 acres in production, and since Kristen saw him last, he has built a new home and greenhouse! Took a walk to the spring fed creek where we waded around ankle deep, in the drizzle, and Kristen and Eric caught Em up on their old road trip stories over PBR! Visited with the cows and sized up the buckwheat field. Eric showed off his new, crazy loud motorcycle and the Allis Chalmers he converted to ELECTRIC! It’s fabulous! Stayed up late yapping about farms and forests and friends! Another excellent part of our journey. Oh, and we were sent off this morning with some of Eric’s famous garlic! Man, life IS good! It’s raining like Noah’s coming and thank ... read more

It's hard to believe but the time for departure is almost here. We leave on Monday bound for Mexico City, Panama and then Quito. It's been quite the process getting to this point and it's easy to forget the incredible amount of organization required to do a trip of this kind. We discovered only a few days ago that my Mexican husband would need a special VISA to get into Ecuador. This important factoid was not mentioned in my ever trusty new copy of Lonely Planet so I was quite surprised to learn it was true. It just said "most nationalities don't need a Visa" but was very non-specific, so when my husband called the Ecuadorian embassy in Mexico City to learn he in fact DID need one, the paper chase was on! It was ... read more

Now that we have internet access again I feel like I need to use it so a short odds and ends message. We have had clam chowder, fish chowder and seafood chowder in several places along the way from Maine on into Canada. All have been delicious and fun to taste different ones. All of the chowders we have had have been of a broth soup consistency, much thinner than traditional New England chowder, but very good. We both feel we have had a 2 year supply of coleslaw and french fries. It seems like most fish meals you order come with those 2 items. You know you have had too many fries when you start comparing them among restaurants as you would with steak or a glass of wine. We have been expecting more "traditional" ... read more

Alaska Highway Milepost 779: Teslin, Yukon Pop.411 We visited the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre. There was a movie that we watched about their history and then exhibits that we toured. They were traders long before the Russians or other outsiders arrived and wanted to trade. The Centre had enough information to be satisfying, but not so much that it was overwhelming. Alaska Highway Milepost 784: Mukluk Annies Salmon Bake We stopped here for our evening meal and both had the salmon. It’s cooked over wood coals and has a great flavor. There are a lot of bones in it, but that didn’t keep us from enjoying it. This is the kind of restaurant that seats people together to fill up the tables. We enjoyed the company of the other people at the table and all are ... read more

We left our hotel and boarded the 7:45 ADO bus to Merida. The 1st Class tickets cost just over $20 US each. Although a direct route with no stops, the trip took a boring 4 hours. When we arrived at the Merida station, we got directions to our hostel and decided it was better to pay the $3.00 cost of a taxi than to drag our luggage 14 blocks. Arriving at our hostel, Hostal Nomadas, we checked in, paid our bill of fifty some dollars for the 3 nights and deposited our luggage in our room. After getting the lowdown on hammocks (supposedly Merida is THE best place to get one), we headed out. We made the mistake of stopping at a hammock shop before going to the recommended place and had to listen to ... read more

After breakfast today we traveled to the Office of American States. The OAS is an international organization including 34 countries that serves as a forum for democracy and discussion of human rights. Namely, the OAS has been working to create sustainable development in the environment worldwide. They are working to create programs to determine the needs of and help those affected by the climate change. There are people who are living along the basin of the Amazon river who have experienced droughts and malaria outbreaks. The OAS is trying to create policies to alleviate suffering and help change our ideas toward the environment. After a discussion at the OAS, we moved onto the Hotel Washington for lunch. The Hotel Washington is one of the oldest hotels in Washington D.C. and has an amazing view of the ... read more

Traveling through 4 states (Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming) went well for Millie, who is now having a couple of day's break in a nice campground in West Yellowstone, less than a mile from the park's West entrance. We spent a good bit of time in the park today and were thrilled to see a herd of Elk within 10 minutes of entering. The boys have also pointed out bison, mule deer, prairie dogs and either a bald or golden eagle's nest with the hopes of seeing a bear and moose during the trip. The geysers, hot springs and mud pots were really amazing and we'd like to see more tomorrow. We had dinner overlooking Old Faithful as we waited for the eruption which occurs anywhere from 40 to 90 minutes. This is our fourth ... read more
