Like anything, you really can have too much of a good thing. We were certainly ready to leave the ferry behind this morning, even if the rolling seasick feeling stayed with us for a further 24 hours. We arrive in Whittier, a port near to Anchorage - our destination - as the crow flies but not all that easy a journey. At 7:30 when we got there we had a choice - wait until 7pm for a train or pay $40 each to go in Manuel's van. There are more Puerto Ricans living in New York City than in any city in Puerto Rico, we learn. After initial reluctance, he drops us off at our hostel (The 26th St Hostel - a 100% recommendation from us should anyone be passing through Anchorage). We wander downtown ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Seward July 13th 2006

Seward is a fishing village located in the northwest corner of Resurrection Bay, an arm of the Pacific Ocean. It was established in 1793 by the Russians as a shipbuilding site, but came into its own as a port after Alaska was purchased by the US government (Remember "Seward's Folly" from high school?). When gold was found in northern Alaska, since shipping access to the mining areas on the Bering Sea coast were shut down by ice from October to June, a winter overland supply route became essential. This was accomplished by a 938 mile dogsled route from Seward to Nome, carrying supplies into the mining camps and returning with gold. This route became known as the Iditarod Trail, and is the basic route followed by the famous Iditarod dogsled race, although the route has been ... read more

Hey People I am finally back right here where I am more comforable right now. The trip back was really burtel....I got sick, form eating breakfast. He lives like half and hour away in Santa Ana. So after dinner ... read more

North America » United States » Hawaii » Big Island » Kailua-Kona July 13th 2006

On Saturday the 8th of July we had a pretty quiet day. After breakfast at our hotel (whilst watching dolphins swim by) we headed into the main part of Kona looking for an internet cafe. We were greeted by some friendly locals asking if we wanted to buy any herb however we politely declined. Upon asking where an internet cafe was we were asked where we were from. After responding Australia, we were asked, much to Shane's disbelief 'Where is that?'. After a relaxing afternoon by the pool we headed to Bubba Gumps Shrimp Co for dinner, a restaurant based on the movie 'Forrest Gump'. The food was delicious and we even got to take a bit home for a snack the following day. On Sunday the 9th of July we went on what felt the ... read more

For the past 12 days my family and I were away on our annual camping trip. Each year we pilgrammage to a Christian camp to enjoy fellowship with family and friends we have known for years as well as those we meet for the first time. Many of the attendees are from Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, DC, PA (of course), and all over the United States. During our encampment, there are morning and evening church services and a host of seminars that are power packed. During the week there are about 3,000 people on the campgroup and on the weekend the amount of people is unbelievable, I'd estimate about 10,000 people attend the church service. The Governor attended the church services as well as the Mayor of Philadelphia. Pictured is the cabin we stayed in ... read more

Our time in the USA has come to an end. We´ve just spent the last two weeks having an interesting cultural experience in the southern states of America. Who would´ve thought the south and north were so different! For a starters it was so, so hot. Plus they talk and eat differently. We spent most of our time just out of Memphis attending a ´Pre-Field Orientation´conference as a prerequisite for our time in Bolivia. We got prepped up on cultural shock, cultural differences etc - all very helpful for the year ahead. We experienced a slight cultural shock of our own by attending a conference with so many Americans! Nah, it wasn´t too bad. We stayed with a ´host family´ who were very lovely and showed us what southern hospitality is all about. During our free ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Cape Coral July 12th 2006

Jackie and I were able to go down together to Florida to visit Dad, making it the first time in 2 years that all three of us were together. Jackie could only go for 2 days, but that's better than nothing! We spent the two days hanging out and drinking, basically. We took a few Father-Daughters pictures - and by "a few" I mean "a hundred" because we kept laughing or looking goofy. Jackie left on the 4th of July, so she missed the fireworks over the Cape Coral bridge that night. They were lovely! The other highlight of the trip was a trip to the Everglades with Dad. It's just a quick 2 hour drive to Everglade City, so after breakfasting at Waffle House (a requirement on any road-trip with Dad and I), we took ... read more
