Going there On thursday Svein asked me if I wanted to go to Sequioa and Kings Canyon National Parks with him, Carina(a fellow student), Alex(her American boyfriend), Martin(a colleague from PeerMe) and Camilla(his Danish girlfriend). Since I didn't have any plans, I said yes. A wise decision, as the trip turned out to be great. We were supposed to leave Mountain View at about 13:00 on Friday. Due do various circumstances, we didn't make it out of there until 15:00. Bad idea. We were locked in gridlock until way beyond San Jose. We arrived at the Sequoia Motel in Three Rivers late in the afternoon. More about the motel and Three Rivers in another blog. The sun was setting just as we arrived, so I decided to go take some photos by the artificial Lake Kaweah, ... read more

Finally, I am back out on the road. I actually left Florida last Friday, the 7th. My first stop was Johnson City, TN. I took back roads almost the entire way which caused the trip to be 12 hours instead of 10. I decided not to do any more days like that. From there on out, I would only do, at the most, 7 hour days. I stayed with my friend, Gretchen, in JC and on Saturday morning we decided to go to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Neither of us had ever been and she wanted to get away for the weekend. We got her parents Lincoln Towncar, their BP card and hit the road. Eight hours later, we were in Cedar Island waiting for the Ocracoke ferry. After a two and a half ... read more

Today was the annual Yeager family picnic and it was great to see all the family together. We had lots of food, lots of great conversation, and the annual water fight. The water fight always makes me wonder, "Who are the real kids in this family?"... read more

I had been wondering when I posted the last one where all of the pictures were. I did find them, but a little late so here is the final Yellowstone wrapup. We also have an additional blog entry from Ed as he had not been with us to add to the talk until recently. After we came back from Sequoia NP, we decided to head "downtown" to Three Rivers to scout out the local nightlife. Martin and Camilla were sceptic, but finally we all headed down. I volunteered to drive for the evening, since I didn't want to get "motionsick" for the long trip the following day. Well, the bar was, what can I say, authentic. A lot of locals and some visitors. I headed out to the veranda in the front, overlooking the river running through the village. While sitting there, I observed the bartender cleaning some tables. When he found some half-full glasses, he just threw the rest of the contents over the fence, spilling half of it on the floor, and the rest on the fence itself. This is really redneck was my reaction..... Well, as the ... read more

Underway on the USCGC WALNUT My short fly by to check on the house in Alexandria and the fam in California done, it was on to Hawaii. So what did I do in the first few days after I was out of the Coast Guard? Well I was out on the 1st of July, swore in to the Reserves on the 7th of July and flew out to Hawaii for a week underway with Meg on the WALNUT on the 15th of July. So much for flying solo. It was great to see Meg and get underway again. I hadn't seen Meg since her and Bob's wedding so we had lots to catch up on. The house she and Bob have is even better than the last, no pool but instead of one deck overlooking the ... read more

I really hate Delta. All that time I spent in line yesterday getting my flight rebooked was a waste. They had tried to put me on a flight out of Gatwick into Edinburgh so I wouldn't have to worry about purchasing another train ticket. Well, about 20 minutes after I left Nashville airport to head to my icky hotel room my "confirmed" flight on BA was cancelled. Now that flight is full. I get into Gatwick at 7am and my new flight to Edinburgh isn't until 8pm. So I spent another hour at the counter today while the same guy (bless his heart) tried to fix my flight. They gave me a note saying that it's the airline's fault I missed my train. I wonder if the UK train system cares. But at least I'm getting ... read more

It felt great to arrive in the US and be able to get lost in a crowd again, instead of standing out like a sore thumb. Ah, the freedom of walking around without getting harassed. We had found ourselves a cheap motel room on the outskirts of Denver, using an internet service called hotwire. Basically many hotels have signed up for this service as it allows them to hire rooms that would otherwise go unsold, and even if they get less money for them, well better than zero. The main advantage for travellers is that it doesn’t force you to have a US based credit card, unlike its competitor priceline.com. For us it worked out great. We paid a lot less than the advertised price for this room, and it turned out to have air con, ... read more
