Starting out on Saturday in San Francisco, on sunny-blue-sky-and-cool-air morning, I took the F Line from Fisherman's Wharf down to the Embarcadero and the Ferry Building. How do you eat the best peach in your life... three times in one week (each one being better than before)? Well, you start by buying an organic peach at one of the Ferry Building shops over lunch. Then go to the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Saturdays and buy one there. http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/ (Read on to find out about the best peach) I toured around the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market for a little bit... bought some fresh juice, a peach :), a carrot muffin, and a cookie. I then took BART across the bay to the Oakland city center, where I picked up a car I reserved on the Internet ... read more

Hi there Good flight, boys watched back to back movies whilst I slept on Toby's lap. Boys wheedled a tour of the jumbo including a spell in the cockpit on the controls. Toby switched off the emergency lights at JFK whilst weaing the pilot's hat! Good hotel - suite on the 12th floor with very Manhattan like glimpses of the skyline. Inevitably woke up early and found a fab diner where we failed at the first challenge which was to eat all the hotcakes, all the eggs sunnyside up, all the granola, all the strawberries etc. If we'd had a doggy bag that would have been breakfast sorted for the rest of the week. Wandered into mid town, counting the pooches been taken for their Upper Westside trots - what is this obsession with chihuahuas and ... read more

As my departure deadline approached I realized I had a problem. My car was packed to the gills and the inside of my house looked like I had moved nothing. That was my first estimation error. I would need more space to transport my stuff. It took my friend Sara only a few minutes to convince me that I should postpone my departure and look into renting a U-Haul trailer. The next morning I bought the necessary equipment for my car hitch and went to U-Haul to pick up the trailer. I tried to look at the experience as a training in patience as I waited and watched the U-Haul guy hook up the wiring and hitch to my car. I had to lead him to the correct wrenches and point out where he might place ... read more

Vi havde ... read more

Hope you enjoyed our blog hearing of our journies together--we are back in sunny california trying to process our trip and get ready for homelife again. Kevin's going to massage school for 12 straight days! and Kara will work on her dissertation, both jetlagged and happy to have had such an exciting adventure. Our honeymoon in the third world. It has been a great learning experience. One of the big lessons we've taken from our trip seems simple but it almost needs a direct challenge that confronts all the senses rather than just intellectual understanding--it's that this world is so big with so many people and cultures and haves and have nots, and the idea of wealth is truly relative. There are some people there who seem so happy without desiring all the stuff of our ... read more

We're Getting Closer! Little Gracie was helping me to sort out the suitcases this week, to try to decide who gets what, and which ones weigh the most, least, etc... when she discovered the joy of pretending to fly to Mississippi in her unzipped carry on bag. She ran to her room collected all her babies and the imagination began to twirl! Shouting goodbyes, farewells, "daddy I'll call ya when I get there" out across the house. And then as we worked a little longer, the silence fell behind us, when we turned to see that little Gracie obviously had been worn out by the flight, the hustle and bustle, the toting of her babies through the plane... so she fell fast asleep in our hall way all snuggled up in her very own carry on ... read more

‘Konkankada’ and ‘Lingmala Falls’ on Kauai, Hawaii Lush green vegetation and red earth, azure blue sky, white lacy waterfalls and all around you dark, blue-green ocean stretching to the horizon. Why, this is my own native land! This is no different than our own Sahyadri Ghats and Konkan! (Konkan region is the western part of the state of Maharashtra, India between the Arabian Sea and Sahyadri Hills) I felt I had come to the home of my childhood. My ‘maiher’ (Parental home)! Really, that is the first impression Kauai made on me. At every turn, I was reminded of something familiar, something I have seen before, had a sense of Déjà vu! The coconut groves, the pineapple orchards, the sugarcane plantations, we have them all, but where are the ‘supari’( areca nut ) trees? Where are ... read more

Maui, the Valley Isle We spent three days on Maui, just one day on the Big Island, one day on Oahu, two days on Kauai and were wholly satisfied with our choice. Maui has a lot to give and is generous with her gifts. Each island of Hawaii is predominantly associated with a particular activity. The Big Island is synonymous with Kilauea volcano; Kauai evokes an image of canyons and rainforest while Oahu gets identified with Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head overlooking the Waikiki beach. Each island has a ‘leeward’ side and a ‘windward’ side, and consequently, soft-sand beaches and wild, craggy coasts are found on all the islands. The difference in the weather of Hilo and Kona even though they are on the same island and separated by less than 100 miles, can also be ... read more

Just feel like releasing some frustration. This post is mostly for my own good, so feel free to skip it. I have 4 days before I leave, and it is one stressful week! Most of them could be avoided, but procrastion is what I am good at. First, I had all kinds of problems with my bank (all good now). Second, my acceptance and registration letter from Sciences Po got returned to France by our wonderful GT post office. Thirdly, I have to take a test to show my knowledge of French, which involves writing something about advertisement and whether we can trust it (as if I care). I am very far from being packed, and neither do I have any idea how I can fit everything I need in one suitcase. I do have 4 ... read more
