Thanks to its jagged rock walls, Eldorado Canyon State Park is a very popular spot for rock climbers. The park attracts climbers from all over the state, and especially from nearby Boulder. The canyon itself is really remarkable to see: it honestly looks like someone took a huge bulldozer and jus cut a large swath through the foothils south of the Flatirons. I'm not a rock climber and vertigo will probably keep me from attempting it any time soon, but I have no doubts as to why this place is so popular. While the park is geared more towards rock climbers, it does have a few nice hiking trails that climb up the steep canyon walls. The Eldorado Canyon trail actually climbs up and out of the park, eventually merging with the Walker Ranch loop on ... read more

In South American and the Caribbean, we learned that * countries here really like to fly enormous flags * Chile's Kunstmann beer from Valdivia is by far the best beer we had, especially the Miel of honey kind * Argentina really likes salt. The waitress thought we were strange when we didn't want salt for our pizza * unlike Europe, South America was very committed to cold beer, frequently serving it in a wine cooler or in a cozy * cheese thrown on the grill is awesome...kidney and tripe, not so much * with all that beef, you would think there would be leather for sale, but no * on the way to Uraguay from Argentina, there is security screening...you know, metal detectors and stuff,...but not on the return trip in the other direction * Ciudad ... read more

A highlight for today was having cereal and milk for breakfast! Something I thought I would have to go without for a year. Also the beautiful weather and walking on one of the many trails the park have created around the entrance.... read more

There is not much to write about 10 hour drives that start at 2:30pm except that you can make it faster with Western speed limits. The scenery at the beginning was pretty and as we were driving on Saturday both of us could drive. That being said, we arrived in Hill City SD at 11:00pm on Saturday night. When we awoke, it was to an already very hot sunny morning at the J Bar Ranch Campground. We gave ourselves a break and just hung around the campground (most of my earlier catch up blogs that didn’t happen in the Virginian laundry room happened here). Ed took the kids to the nice swimming pool and we just hung around because we all had pretty low energy levels. It seemed too warm to go to Mt Rushmore so ... read more

So far this week, we've had rain, hale, thunder & lightning, and tornados. All we need is sunshine and snow and we've about covered it. We were kind of lucky in my area; power has remained on, but not so just 10 miles away. In Chester County, major power outages have occured since Tuesday 7/18. In fact some homes and business's are still out of power and may be until Sunday. I know at Wawa, they managed to keep 15 stores open by using generators. Rather large and expensive, but we always want to be there for the community. To "brighten" up the message, here's a couple pics of the kids having fun between the rain.... read more

Ok, thank you to Cait for recommending this site. I think it will be a great way to keep our friends and families updated on our adventures! I leave on Tuesday and have begun the complicated task of fitting 20 pairs of shoes into an internal frame backpack. It just isn’t going to happen--I think 19 will have to do. My travels first take me to Hong Kong, where I'll spend some time in the office and overcoming my jetlag. I fly to Beijing on the 29th and will travel through China until August 11. We hit all of the major cities, Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and the most important cultural sites. Then it is back to Hong Kong where I meet Evan on Aug 12. We'll spend a few days working/touring and then we ... read more

Well, it's been a few days now, and I'm really enjoying myself. I've got a sweet set-up with some friends in the area--though I decided to crash with them at last minute, they still were able to accomodate me in my own room. I'm planning lots of trips because I'm not sure when I'll have this opportunity again, after all keeping track of all the humans at work is quite demanding! Give my love to Victoria. I'm sure she misses me (just as much as I miss her!), but I'm OK and wouldn't trade this opportunity for anything.... read more

Hot nights, hotter days. I found a site last night around 2030, at Center Lake campground in Custer State Park, SD. I was headed from the badlands to Rapid City on Hwy. 44. I took this route because on the map/brochure I had it was labeled “Scenic.” Well, Scenic was actually just a town, the only town, between the Badlands and Rapid City on 44. It consisted of a couple of dirt roads (very popular here in SD). I think I may have seen 8 cars during the entire 92 miles of travel between the two places. About 40 miles west of The Badlands, I noticed my fuel was at about 1/8 of a tank and there was not a gas station in sight. When the gauge hit E (no warning light yet..but it should come ... read more

The weather in the Bahamas started getting worse with bad thunder and lightening storms 1-2 times a day. We decided it was time to leave the islands and return to America, to go north for the upcoming hurricane season. So we crossed back to Florida and have started our trek up the East Coast. After checking into Fort Pierce and experiencing the culture shock of being back in a place with a lot of people and a lot of cars, our first big stop was Cumberland Island National Park which is located at the border of Florida and Georgia. It is a favorite stop for many cruisers who enjoy its natural beauty, picturesque setting, and abundant wildlife. Cumberland Island is the largest of Georgia’s Barrier Islands and has many ecosystems. You can kayak through the marshlands ... read more

Today we made our way to Denali National Park, a huge area dedicated to 'wilderness', quite uneventful apart from the rude, obnoxious lady who owned the mini bus shuttle bus we used to get there - but I am not going there. It was also a 'sussing' out day, finding out about the park's history and existence, what we could do there and so on. The park is absolutely huge (bigger than the state of Vermont they keep telling us, if anyone knows how big that makes it). There is a single road into the park which is closed to private vehicles. Everyone has to go in on the park's shuttle bus service. And then if you want to go into the real wilderness you just walk in any direction. No trails, no facilities, no nothing. ... read more
