Odometer: 34225km The day started with breakfast at Hunter's Diner. I was one of those classic American Diners and had earned "Best Diner of the Region- Peoples Choice Award." It looks a bit like the fuselage of an airplane and is covered in stainless steel inside and out. They were prefabricated in New Jersey and then shipped to their final location for assembly. Hunter's was put in place in 1953 and has been owned and operated by the family ever since. The place was very clean and everyone was efficiently attended to my two waitresses. They seemed to know most of the clientelle by their first names. My waitress was Rae. I couldn't help but comment on her name. "That is a unique name. My sister-in-law's is the same." "Oh it's unique alright, but it isn't ... read more

Aaaaahhhhhh. Back to the comforts of familiar territory: fast cars, loose women and triple cheeseburgers. The US of A. Land of the free. Home of the Whopper. Marvellous. I flew into Miami sporting a tremendous hangover, having been unable to leave a bar in Belize City due to being the only person in the audience for the 5 piece band that was playing. As my body tried to cope with the chemicals ingested the night before, I became increasingly irritable, and for the first time in a long time found myself snapping at strangers. Not entirely to blame here - Miami really is a shockingly shit airport. In my haste to clear the building, I allowed myself to be traded up to a Mustang from a Ford Focus (or similar) at Hertz, and was somewhat surprised ... read more

Well, I am 7 days out from leaving the states. I feel ok about my preparation status. I got a backback, which I love and is very comfortable. Hooray REI. And I think I am well stocked in the toiletries and clothing department. Still waiting to hear about how the weather will be in Poland and Germany. I am hoping not cold, but somehow I sense that Imay be dissapointed. I have excellent news! I was really stupid when researching this 'Brzezinka' place that I was going to. Now, true, Brzezinka is the polish name for Birkenau, the camp attached to Auchwicz. However, it is also the name of the forest base camp about an hour from the Grotowski Center. So, I will not be in a concentration camp. Which soothes my nerves just a little ... read more

Well, upon coming home from Santa Barbara, my family decided to pack up and head out to the national park for a couple of days. I hadn't been there since I was perhaps 8, so I was looking forward to it. Fast forward several hours later. I'm hiking through the woods at an embarrassing pace, the hot sun beating down on my back and the bugs making a feast of my flesh, and I'm thinking, "Okay, so I wanted to go trekking in Nepal?? What in the hell was I smoking?!" However, the hike to Crystal Cave really wasn't that bad, and it was nice to be welcomed by some cool breezes once inside. The cave was pretty amazing inside, and the tour was pretty interesting. We started off on a small trail that led to ... read more

So what’s been happening in Hawaii since I last updated. Well it was my birthday on the 27th June….So many people remembered lots of sarcasm here! Hey but I am not bitter I had a great day diving that day. Went diving off Waikiki with two students and certified them which was cool did there whole course so was real nice and fun to teach here shame it’s only been a couple of students. The Waikiki waters were cold compared to Thailand but the vis and marine life were pretty good but not as I expected it to be in such a place but I guess the built up area of Waikiki and the pollution takes it toll. Canada Day was upon us on the 1st July I am totally oblivious to what historical significance this ... read more

Hello everyone! Yes I am finally back in the United States... actually I got back on Friday June 30th at around 6:30. But we moved (yes i actually came back to a totally different house... weird right?) and I had work and such and shoddy internet access... so it's been a while. Sorry! As sad as I was to leave that beautiful country and those beautiful children, I was also very happy to get back to my family (and the land of ice cubes and air conditioning! haha) Let's see... the last time I wrote was after our camp in Donja Mahala? OK so after that camp we had one in Brcko (sounds like Berch-Ko) and Srebrinica (simplified: Sreb-rih-nee-chah) The camp in Brcko: Well it was a small one with only 52 kids... because it happened ... read more

Hello! I'm getting ready for a trip to Tanzania later this month. Going to try really hard to climb Kilimanjaro, and then setting out to go on safari and explore the cities and towns along the countryside. Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar are definite destinations, but I'm open to advice from fellow travelers! Not sure what to expect, but looking forward to the sights, sounds, and adventures just waiting to be discovered!... read more
