The ground was dry in Vernal as we prepared for departure Monday morning. An encroaching thunderstorm grazed us as we rode North, over the East Shoulder of the High Uinta mountains. Beautiful green meadows and aspens along the road set against some fine twisties and empty road riding. Passing Flaming Gorge to the East, we flew over a beautiful road toward Rock Springs. The headwind caused horse power envy for Reverend Bill as Reverend Chuck flew through the high-speed sweepers on his R1150GS. North out of Rock Springs you cross the high basin that the Oregon Trail traversed. It is the lowest point in the continental divide and desolate sage covers the endless expanse. North of Farson, we came across the Oregon Trail itself, wagon ruts still visible just off the highway. The nearby cattle bones ... read more

We woke up in the beautiful black hills of South Dakota and headed to the old gold mining village of Deadwood. You may better know this city from the movie and the famous Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. We visited Saloon 10 where Wild Bill was shot in the back of the head holding two aces, two 8's and a nine. Today the city is much like it was back in the 1800's only with a fresher look. There is more cement than the old wooden casinos and brick mills, but there are more one room casinos in this little town than I had quarters for. Just kidding, I'm more of a card player than a slots fan myself. We did find a gold mine in a small little sweets shop on the outskirts of ... read more

Before I begin, a word of caution to the reader—If you are a big Starbucks fan, love Westchester county NY, Nassau county NY, Hollywood, Manhattan, are thin-skinned or object to the use of bodily orifices as personal epithets, then please do everyone a favor and navigate away from this page and go back to browsing the Obama website and sipping your mocha-chino latte. Keep reading the soothing propaganda offered there in place of the tacit observations which are about to follow… I have made the utmost effort to behave in my rants up till this point but that is about to change, and the deviation may offend some. That said, go to Google maps and zoom in on the state of Wyoming. Focus on the northwest quadrant. Zoom in a couple clicks further. See it? The ... read more

I am updating you guys with some pics from day 1 and some from day 2 (at Yellowstone). We will be going back again. We went to Jackson Lake, Jenny Lake, and there are pictures of the falls at Crawfish Creek and Keppler's Cascade (Falls). We are going out this evening the get pictures of the buffalo, elk, antelope, and moose. We forgot the camera on Sunday night (or thought it was in the car ... which it wasn't). Then our pictures of the moose at Yellowstone didn't turn out great because it was soooo early in the morning. About 6 AM. We left for Yellowstone at 4:30 AM to catch the wildlife. We saw elk, antelope, moose, and a wolf. We will go back up there again too. Actually, our second stop will be at ... read more

Today, Julia woke up with a big smile on her face and said, “Horse Day!” They were so excited to meet their horses that they would be riding for the day. We drove to Alpine, Wyoming to meet our guide at Jackson Hole Outfitters. Our guide, Cole, introduced us to our three horses - Andrea, Star and Twist. Julia rode in a buddy saddle behind Tony. The entire ride was an experience that I don’t think any of us will ever forget. For ten miles, the five of us were the only people on the trail riding up the side of a mountain and then back down. Our horses galloped at times, crossed streams and climbed steep, and sometimes narrow trails. Tony and I would hold our breaths as we watched Maddie maneuver her horse, Star, ... read more

Howdy from Granite Hot Springs, Wyoming. We’re wrapping up another great day outside of Jackson Hole near Hoback Junction. This morning, we went on a scenic, white water rafting trip down the Snake River with the Teton Expeditions. Initially, I thought that the river might be a little rough for the girls, but when I saw little, old ladies getting on the raft with oxygen tanks - I knew that we were in for a calm ride down the river. Our guide, Dave, did all of the paddling from the back and the raft and we were in charge of relaxing and watching for wildlife. During our fourteen mile float, we did see some pelicans and osprey, but the most impressive were the bald eagles and their nests. I’ve never seen a bald eagle outside of ... read more

Last night, we spent the night at Gros Ventre campsight which is near the Grand Tetons and just north of Jackson. After dinner, we went for a little hike at dusk and saw a large, female moose about 100 yards in front of us. We used the binoculars to watch it for a while - incredible! Afterwards, Tony and Julia hunted for fire wood and made our first rip roarin' fire. We wanted to make S'mores, but we didn't have any chocolate. Tony came up with the idea to subsititute chocolate pudding instead. It tasted great! This morning, we drove into Jackson Hole. We finally feel like we're in an authentic cowboy town! Everything is so tough and rugged around here. With the Tetons as a backdrop, the view around town is breath-taking! We spent the ... read more

After an almost six hour flight to New York across Greenland and the Atlantic ocean we arrived at JFK airport. I must admit i was expecting the worst from immigration having had several grillings before. However perhaps arriving with a plane load of harmless Icelandic was the way to go as I have never had such a laidback entrance into the U.S. No sign of George Bush's ugly portrait thankfully we went straight through to get fingerprinted, photographed and stamped into the U.S. Interesting they use sniffer beagles like Sydney airport too. Not one question was asked on how long was our stay, where we were going...etc... very impressed. Outside the airport were lines of yellow cabs and loud touts. We tried the hotel desk and a bored looking young man called a few overpriced hotels ... read more
