The hard, windy drive from Colorado to Jackson was not that fun, but arriving to my aunt's house with glasses of wine and beer nearly poured for us was. Saturday was a really long, full day. We started by going to the Jackson Hole Ski Club's annual fundraiser- the Ski Swap. The swap features all gear related to skiing. Mark and I scored! We were each able to buy a pair of ski pants, ski boots, skis, $2 dollar t shirts, and a number of warm jackets for a low, low price. In fac... read more

What a difference a day can make. The rain has gone and the sun is once again shining brightly. Today we took advantage of the weather and stopped at many of the viewing spots and scenic areas around Teton National Park. First stop was Oxbow Bend where we had started yesterday. I'd hope for calm waters in the river so I could have a photo of Mt Moran reflecting in the water. We didn't see it there but not too much further along the highway was the Jackson Lake and Reservoir and that was the spot. The waters were calm and the reflections lovely. From there we headed to the top of Signal Mountain for the views and then down to Signal Lodge for lunch. It was a short trip today by comparison but scenic to ... read more

We made our last drive through Yellowstone towards the south entrance. The temp this morning was 55 F and consequently all the springs and geysers were steaming heavily. I was thankful that I was able to photograph so many of them yesterday when the air was warm and the steam was minimal. This is Sunday and there are not nearly as many people in the park as there were yesterday. The road to the south entrance is one that we had traveled 4 years ago when we crossed the Continental Divide to see the Tetons. On that occasion it was snowing but today the temp was in the 50's and the forests were green. At one overlook further into the forest, there was an interesting story board about the terrible 1988 fires in Yellowstone. Many fires ... read more

After leaving Harriman, we had two days before we were scheduled to be back at Massacre Rocks so we decided to make a swing through western Wyoming for a quick visit with Bob’s nephew, Pat Renz, his wife Lori, and their sons Patrick and Andrew. We first passed through the southwestern corner of Yellowstone National Park. We had spent several days in Yellowstone in 2007, so we didn’t take time for much sightseeing there on this trip. We came out of the south exit of Yellowstone and dropped down into Jackson Hole, the beautiful valley almost completely surrounded by rugged mountains. Our destination was the resort town of Jackson, located at the southern end of “the Hole”. We soon entered the Grand Teton National Park and followed US 26 along the edge of Jackson Lake. We ... read more

So even though the art fair was a bust we got a lot of comments about how folks loved the fact that we are taking off for a year in Ruby G. Added to the comments from friends and family, there are a lot of people living vicariously through us. Pressure? Nah. It is fun and validating to have others see our adventure as a worthy endeavor. We believe in it. How nice to have others feel the same way. What is especially rewarding is having our teacher friends talk about the end of summer coming and the return of kids in the classroom. We remember that world vividly. While there is a pang of regret that I won't be returning this year, the pang doesn't last very long as the road stretches out ahead. We ... read more

How did I get here? So how did I come to decide to take a year off to travel and not live the conventional way I have been doing? How does anyone? I'm sure I will find a lot of answers to the second question as time goes on. As to the first question, it was an easier decision than you might think. As with a lot of significant changes, this one was born out of crisis. I lost my job of 8 years. It was no ordinary job. It was one that I took great pride in, that I gave my all to and that I loved. The suddenness of the loss was quite staggering. I am fairly well programmed to being employed. I have had a job ever since the summer after 7th grade ... read more

We made it to Jackson Hole, Wyoming with nary a problem. Our first stop was in Kansas where we spent the night in the Walmart parking lot. They encourage such practice. Sleeping with the devil you know. How ironic. Next we stopped half way through the state and saw our friends Michael, Gloria and Zac Baurmeister who were headed back to St. Louis from the Boulder art fair. It was good to see them and play gadget tag while we pinpointed our rendezvous. A "gadget" is Michael's name for an iPhone. And what a gadget it is. Ours has proven to be very helpful in terms of finding Walmart parking lots to knowing the weather to getting all sorts of communication. Next we headed for Pocatello, Idaho and Melisse's brother John. As always, he greeted us ... read more

In Which the Author Leaves the Bridger-Tetons National Forest Thursday, August 13, 2009, 11:00 a.m. Leaving Jackson, Wy. yesterday, having gotten water (I’m using about 4-5 gallons a day, just for cooking, drinking, washing hands, etc.), PBRs, gasoline ($2.47—not bad), posting yesterday’s blog entry, gotten batteries and postcards (my one souvenir weakness), checked into the Visitors Center, which was staffed with nice retired folks, eager to chat and offer assistance. I finally headed south at about 3 p.m., enjoying the drive of vast, rolling canyons, dotted with trees, dirt, grasses and sage, and jagged rocks and following the Snake River. Had I been slightly more organized, I would have found the location of Evel Knievel, whose daring “motorcycle” jump I watched on the news back in the ‘70s. (There was a 3-day blackout, as it ... read more

We left Mt. Rushmore yesterday only after a terrific helicopter flight over Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse where we saw buffalo. We also did the Alpine Slide there too. Then we ate at Peggy's Place for breakfast and then drove to Devil's Tower, WY where they filmed Close Encounters of the Third Kind. We rode funky lowrider 3 wheelers at the KOA there and checked into our cabin and then a fascinating local rock climbing instructor, musician/ bed and breakfast inkeeper gave us a terrific tour of his private property at the base of the tower where he takes folks climbing to the top daily. We ate dinner at the KOA. It rained all night and the next day we rode horses around Devil's Tower which was great even though it rained. We saw a mother ... read more

Our trip is winding down and we are taking some quiet time in one of my favorite places -- Grant Teton National Park. We are staying at THE HOSTEL at the base of Teton Mountain in Teton Village outside of Jackson Hole. Yesterday morning we awoke to clouds but dry conditions in Rexburg, ID, but that was shortlived. We weren't more than five miles out of Rexburg heading north toward West Yellowstone when the sky opened up and it began to rain. As we rose in elevation, the clouds became thicker and the rain more steady. By the time we reached West Yellowstone 80 miles later, we were pretty cold. We arrived at 10:00 sharp and walked into a little Baptist church just as the service was starting. I was concerned that we might be under-dressed ... read more
