As I tend to do for road trips, I left after work to get a few hours of driving in. Unfortunately, I didn't get to leave as early as I wanted due to the spectacular failure of something I take care of at work. Unfortunately, it took five hours (on a two hour SLA) to get connected with the vendor's technician (at 4 PM), and all he did was confirm the problem and have me enable more logging. A few knowledge transfer e-mails later, and I finally got out the door around 5:30. So much for getaway day. (While I was out, it was found to be a known bug and the system was patched. The tech said he searched for known bugs. Grr...) Not much to say about the drive. The first few miles of ... read more

Travels with the family: I met my Parents and sister at the airport in Venice and we made our way to Venice on a water taxi. We spent several days there and headed to Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. Five small towns connected by a train and hiking paths. It is a very secluded group of towns with very few cars yet it is a very touristy spot. After that we went to Florence and saw the center of the Renaissance. Then we went to Rome, which I have already been to with my friends a month or so before. It was an excellent trip and a great way to start off the summer. I left my family a day before they left to go ... read more

We have planned a trip to the United Kingdom and France from March 31, 2011 to April 11, 2011. When planning our trip we agreed that given the choice between touring a castle and walking the streets of London and Paris, we choose to walk the streets. So welcome to our "we're not going to see every castle blog." We hope you enjoy.... read more

...was the first thought in my head as I told the English coordinator at the winter camp I was interviewing for 'yes.'  The second thought I had was, well.....holy sh$t, I am leaving all of the comforts of home, including my friends and family that I have become quite accustomed to having around to go off by myself to a job that I may or may not even like.  And the third thought I had was, I'm glad my camp isn't on Phongyang island.  For those of you who are wondering, the job that I've accepted will be teaching 8-12 year olds English at a 4 week Winter Camp, in the mountains north of Seoul in South Korea. The job starts December 26 and has a 3 day orientation, which means I'll be leaving the states ... read more

Sharyn and I left Naples, Florida on Friday, June 25th. Before going any further I want to say that I am using a tiny laptop. The keys are too close together for my fat little fingers. So, be prepared for some one finger typing errors. We stopped just across the Grorgia state line at the Eagles Roost RV Park. It was a very nice place that we had seen on previous trips. It was never the right time of the day to stop until this year, however. During the night the power converter failed. The air shut down as did all lights, fridge, etc. Luckily we got the name of a guy who would come out to the park and work on it. The slide and the awning were out, and the jacks were down, so moving ... read more

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, While in the United States this past month, I was privileged to see many people who were a part of my past and have helped to shape my future. I am grateful to the people at my church in Madison, Wisconsin, for supporting every endeavor I have undertaken: from theatre in elementary school, to piano competitions in high school, to studying abroad in college, and to now living in China for the foreseeable future. I am also thankful to have been able to see my childhood best friend, who I met when I was two years old. We have the kind of friendship that allows us to pick up right where we left off, even when we don't see each other for years at a time. ... read more

As I relax on the side deck of the house I grew up in in Madison, Wisconsin, I am struck by how surreal the scene in front of me is. The soothing babble of the streams and waterfalls that meander along the side of the house provide a soundtrack for the lush green leaves of the forest behind the house and the beautiful flora and fauna artfully growing around the property. Yes, you are right- this was the most wonderful place in the world to have grown up. Before I wax on about all the wonderful aspects of a childhood in Wisconsin, let me explain why I'm here. After five wonderful months working for Our Chinese Daughters Foundation as the Director of Academic Programs, OCDF and I graciously parted ways. It seems that not even China ... read more

So yesterday we spent the day touring Madison, WI. Vinny and Jen are some serious tour guides. We did EVERYTHING. First off, Porn in the Morn breakfast at the local bar actually called Bennetts Meadowwood Country Club. There was nothing high class about this place, and yes while we were eating our breakfast serious porn was playing on tvs, gross and weird. The eggs were great, however. Next up, they took us to their grocery store, where you can literally walk around and sample ALL the foods. Justin was in heaven, sampling all the crazy shit that I don't normally allow him to buy in the grocery store. This also meant you could sample the cheese and beer. I actually think it tops Wegmans. Following the grocery store, we were then taken to the University of ... read more
