This photo was taken shortly after Jake popped the big question in Madison (in late December). I flew into Madison that evening and Jake took me straight from the airport to a beautiful restaurant in the downtown area. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves (thanks to my flight delays & the fact that it was sub-zero temperatures out that evening!) and it was just an absolutely perfect, wonderful, romantic evening. We drank champagne to celebrate & then spent the rest of the night unraveling the events leading up to the big moment. Apparently everyone knew but me! Twas the night before I leave for Spain and all though the house not a mouse was stirring (including Gunther who was asleep in his bean bag). In 24 hours I will be in the plane somewhere over the Alantic Ocean, which is kinda weird to think about. However, this date is a long a waited one that has required a lot of work to reach. Recently, I have been asked numerous times if I was nervous, the truth is not really. My semester has been a lot of work to plan in order for me to be able to fit it into my academic schedule, but now that the time has finnally come to start this new adventure, I'm ready. Additionally, I am fully confindent in CIEE, the program that I am studying abroad through. ... read more

I thought that I would just put a general outline of what I plan on doing for the next five months: I will be leaving for Spain January 11 and will be returning from London on June 18. For the first 4 months I will be attending school at the University of Alicante, Spain. During this time I will be going on smaller trips through CIEE, my study abroad program. I will also be living with a host family and taking three classes to teach me Spanish and two in English, a history of Spain and a Theology. On May 15, I finish my semester of school and begin to travel Europe. My plans for this month are rather vague, but I have some friends in Europe at the same time that I plan to met ... read more

I'm about halfway done packing, trying to decide what to bring and what not to. Luckily I am going to be bringing my old laptop, which was brought back from the dead with help from my mom and my brother-in-law Chris, and which will hopefully allow me to keep this blog with some regularity. My journey starts tomorrow night with a 6 o'clock bus to O'hare, where I'll catch my overnight flight to Seoul. I have a 10 hour layover there, so I'm hoping that I'll have enough time to be able to run into the city to take some pictures and have lunch before catching my flight to Singapore. The whole thing Madison-to-Singapore is 40 hours. Anyways, I'm starting to get pretty excited. I'll try to do my next entry shortly after I arrive in ... read more

It happened when I picked my brother up from the airport tonight. I arrived a little early and decided to use the ladies' room. After I closed the door to the stall, I got the fright of my life. The toilet flushed suddenly, and without warning. I shrieked, dumping the contents of my purse all over the floor when I instinctively threw my hands in the air to cover my head. Apparently, I am still readjusting to those little American luxuries. In many ways, my life in China was simpler. I didn't own any furniture apart from my digital piano. I bought just enough fresh produce and other food items to make the three meals of the day or, more often than not, headed down the street to the local hole-in-the-wall. The toilets in China are ... read more

Tonight is my last night in the good ole town of Madison. Hitting up Bluephies with some friends for a good meal and some drinks. Packing has been hectic, but still fun. I enjoy being constantly busy. That might be hard when I go the beach in Thailand for days at a time, but I think I will enjoy that too. Packed everything I have left into my car (with room to spare) except for my grill, my bike and my bed (three very important things!, food, fun and relaxation). I kept more dishes and pans than anything else which makes me think that food is pretty important to me. :) Said goodbye to most of the family last weekend. Only a few of them cried...I won't mention names, but you can probably guess who they ... read more

The day we've been waiting for has finally arrived. Election Day, November 4, 2008. I felt so excited the night before that I had trouble sleeping. Like a small child the night before Christmas, I tossed and turned, eagerly checking the bedside clock to count down the hours until I could arise and meet the day. And now....it's here. * HOUR ONE I'm currently sitting court-side, watching the proceedings at my assigned polling station in Wisconsin. I've already voted for my candidate of choice and now have settled down to watch, and wait. For what, I'm not certain. After the scandalous outcome of the 2000 Presidential Election, I think many of my fellow Americans also worry that a similar situation could arise today, on the most historic election in American history. I've been identified by name-tag ... read more

...thanks Keith. :) I have been selling off all of my stuff recently. It is amazing how much you can actually live without. I am going to be living out of a backpack mostly for the next few months. It is going to be a huge change. I won't have my computer to watch TV shows on, I won't have my comfortable bed to relax in. I am not going to have a lot of what I have now, but I won't miss any of the stuff (well, maybe the bed). I will be missing the people though. Not a lot of people from my family move away from their hometown, which I understand, because I like Dorr and Byron Center and Wayland. It is small and not much going on, but it really has a ... read more
