All, Just a note to let you all know that I recently returned from a hiking trip through the National Parks in Utah and Arizona. We went to Grand Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon and Zion. It was a great trip with great friends. I will have some blogs and many photos on those trips up soon. In addition, at the end of December, through early January, I will be traveling to the Czech Republic and Italy, so look for those blogs as well. JJF... read more

So here I am, at home, in Madison, Wisconsin, writing my final blog. On my way home, I traveled on a United 777 from London Heathrow to New York. The Boeing aircraft, like all long-haul equipment, had a personal video device for each passenger. The video options included the ability to track the location of the airplane by GPS. The location was, of course, superimposed over a constantly changing map (see the attached photo). As the aircraft neared North America, I noticed something odd (at least I found it odd). The map of North America marked the locations of Toronto, New York, Houston, Miami, Cleveland and Panama City, Florida. Panama City??? Really??? The map did not mark Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Atlanta, Dallas or Chicago ... but it did include Panama City? Panama City, Florida??? Does anyone ... read more

After months of preparation and anticipation, the first day of our honeymoon and the first day on our own in almost a month has arrived! So, to start it off, we went out to breakfast with friends. As you do. Benedict’s La Strata in Crystal Lake, IL is one of my favourite breakfast places. Jon had a classic eggs benedict and I had my go to favourite, chilaquiles. Once we'd said goodbye to Alicia and Kathy we were off - straight to Home Depot. I suspect there will be a number of shopping trips along the way for things forgotten. Besides, it's Jon's favourite store so in some ways we can count it as part of the holiday. As we drove north towards Wisconsin, the suburbs quickly melted away and the vast fields of corn took ... read more

Today we start a great adventure. Before we get started, let us tell you how we got here. We have always wanted to go to Wimbledon. But you get busy in life, and we had just not gotten around to it. That was until Tyler had the opportunity to go to the US Tennis Open in New York. Ty's adventure reminded us that life is short, and if you want to go to Wimbledon, well ... then you should go to Wimbledon. Wimbledon is in London, and it turns out there are things to see and do in London, besides Tennis. So here we go. The Stone Family vacation begins... No adventure is without mishaps, and our mishaps started early. We arrived at the Madison airport, only to be informed that the flight to Chicago was ... read more

I'm sitting in my room, surrounded by the luggage that I will essentially be living out of for the next few months, I'm becoming flooded with almost every emotion possible. I could not be more excited to be embarking on an experience of a lifetime, to the world that is very much unknown to me. This isn't an opportunity that comes around often. But between Katie and myself, and our wonderful families, we've made this happen. A year worth of planning is about to come down to today as we head to Chicago to catch an evening flight to Paris (our layover before Abuja). I could not be more scared to leave my room, my cat Roo, and my father, who is very much my support system. It'll be quite the wake up call when I ... read more

Madison is the capital of Wisconsin, home to Univ of WI Badgers and our friend Maggie who we met our first year teaching in China. Pete had never been to the state of Wisconsin before this trip and we had a wonderful day there with Maggie. Madison is an amazing small city and offers what we enjoy about the USA: walkable, beautiful and ecclectic. We started off our day with lunch at a Nepalese restaurant, enjoyed Indian beer and people watched. People watching is much more enjoyable in the USA due to the diversity. We then strolled along State St to the Capital building, where we climbed up to the 4th floor to the observation deck to take in the views of Lake Mendota & Minona. We wandered around the beautiful building taking in the views ... read more

Well hello there! I've already introduced myself in my "about me" section, plus I assume that the people interested in reading this blog already know me fairly well, so I'm going to jump right into it! I'm sitting here at 11 p.m., the night before my flight to Manchester, England. I'm in the midst of recovering from a "I can't find my passport" panic attack, that was quickly resolved by looking in the scanner, where my dad had left it. With that out of the way, I'm all packed for the most part, aside from a few items that will be shoved into my suitcase in the morning. Tomorrow I will be heading to the Chicago O'hare Airport to catch my 6:00 p.m. flight to Manchester! After an eight hour plane ride I will arrive at ... read more

Some say the grass is greener on the other side. Others say there’s no place like home. I’d say that two cultures are better than one. Of course that is more easily said now that I am home, sweet home, but I really do believe that something beautiful emerges when the best of many worlds are brought together. Coming to this realization is tough when you are 6500 miles from home (or about 10,500 kilometers to “do as the romans do”) but looking back I can now see that there are some things I will definitely miss about Chinese living and culture. But there are also things that I am thankful for here at home. Culture Shock #1: Traffic, Traffic Everywhere With a population of about 10 million people, Shanghai has as many people as New ... read more
