I have made the first big step in my travels. I bought the ticket. Although technically the first big step was telling work that I was quitting, I feel like that was a big step in moving away from my job, not towards my goal. November 19 is my last day in the country. Lily and I are going to Japan at first for a layover of a couple days. Check out Tokyo and see how cool that is. I have always wanted to go to Japan, so it was nice that we get to spend a couple of days there and explore. We will be couchsurfing while we are there with an English speaker. I am hoping that he can show us around the town a little. I am also wanting to check out the ... read more

The first indication that I'd returned to the United States came when I opened my computer to write this blog and realized I would have to type in English. That was over two weeks ago. Each day, I summoned the courage to crack open my Macbook, and timidly tap out a letter or two. The past several days have brought colossal victory as my grasp of the Roman alphabet returned and I realized that the meaning of each word was distinguished by pronunciation only and not accompanied by one of four tones. Cue victory music. Everything in the United States is different from China. People drive differently, greet friends differently, decorate their homes differently, even sneeze differently, (although I have to say, I'm not at all adverse to the American method of covering the mouth while ... read more

My journey starts in just about 80 days. I have never been more excited for anything in my life. For those of you who don't know (and if you don't, then how did you find my travel blog?) I am moving to Thailand in November! I have a lot of stuff figured out already, but I don't have everything figured out. Some of it I will, some of it I don't want to yet. This is my first little adventure, stepping out of America and finally exploring the world. I want to have some hiccups on the way. I want to have problems and then have to solve them. That is what I like to do. That is what I was made for. I am getting mixed responses from my friends and families. Most are positive, ... read more

Today was a travel day through the land of cheddar, Wisconsin. It seemed fitting after hearing that Brett Favre was traded from the Packers to the NY Jets. We did see a lot of signs wishing him well, and certainly the pubs were ready for the first game for Brett. "Come join us for Favre vs. the Dolphins." We stopped first in Lincolnshire, Illinois to play a great mini-golf course. It was a classic 60's setup with many things to putt around. After the round we needed to refresh at the Flatlanders Brewery for lunch. Kristen had a bbq meatloaf sandwich, and I had the Terriyaki Ahi tuna sandwich. Both of which paired nicely with our harvest amber and scottish ales. A few hours later, after some traffic, we stopped in Madison at The Great Dane ... read more

One day down, 3 more til we get to Glacier National Park. We made it to Madison, Wisconsin at about 9:40 local time. We've decided to see as many major college campuses as we can along the way. Our first stop was University of Illinios in Champaign. We snuck into Memorial Stadium (football) that was unlocked due to construction. Rachel and Emma were convinced we'd be thrown in the clink for tresspassing. It was a cool stadium, but smaller than we thought it would be. However, Assembly Hall (basketball arena) was huge. So far, the biggest attraction in Wisconsin is us...since the zillions of bugs love us! Shawn did a great job driving through lots of construction. So far, he is winning the license plate game with 16 states already. Amy is in second with 4, ... read more

Well, my procrastination has apparently sunken to a new low. I'm finally finishing this deal. I've been back in the States for over 5 weeks now so I suppose this should be finished. Looking back on Greece, despite Brad's accident, it was a really cool experience. Athens was slightly disappointing; the city was pretty dirty and not much to see besides the Acropolis. Also, the Parthenon was covered in scaffolding which is understandable since the thing makes the buildings in Spain look like they are in their infancy, but still kind of less cool than I had expected. We also walked to the Temple of Zeus which is only about 14 columns of what used to be over 100. It was kind of cool though and from there I got a cool picture of the Acropolis. ... read more

Here we are. Our last venue. And we couldn’t be more tired. This morning we did a school show, and the kids looked like they were about to fall over! Then load out, and a drive, and load in. At a not-so-accommodating union house. Lots of non-communication before, not so much miscommunication, just things no one was told. And to make things more fun, the bosses decided we should record tomorrow’s show! Oh my. More details to come, but words are not coming (see yesterday.)... read more

Our last day in Toronto we took a tour of the Steam Whistle Pilsner Brewery. If you're in Toronto and you want a few free drinks, go here and just hang around - they pretty much just pass them out. We did take it though, heard about the great efforts they put into the drink, got to compare prefiltered to officially filtered, had a few more (me anyways, I kept finishing Lauren's). We met a film student and Frenchman, whose name- Romain- we could not pronounce. We walked through Downtown on Yonge St where we couldn't find what we wanted; Lauren didn't get any postcards, Romain didn't find a gift for his host, and there was a lack places to pick up a beer for me. After a small bite, we parted with Romain and stopped ... read more

Today I had my first real brush with democracy. Throughout the heated race for the democratic nomination, I've kept my cool. I decided on a candidate early on in the process, but also made time to listen to all viable candidates debate during the run-up to the Wisconsin primary. I expressed my opinions politely when disagreeing with a friend or acquaintance's choice. I calmly explained my rationale for my candidate to someone who was undecided. That all fell apart today. Today I was screaming like a rabid fan at a rock concert. Today I lost my cool. Today I met Bill Clinton, former leader of the free world. He was in Madison, campaigning on behalf of Senator Clinton, his wife. It was announced only yesterday that he would be in Madison in-between campaign stops in Milwaukee, ... read more
