To get to Utah from the Grand Canyon South Rim you must go east about 35 miles and then north a hundred miles or so to the first bridge over the Colorado river at Marble Canyon AZ. From there its west over to Fredonia and north into Utah. We moseyed (sp?) up US 89 to the Hitching Post Campground in Panguitch, UT. Panguitch is a neat little cowboy town and is the gateway to Bryce Canyon. A local wrangler told us about a butcher shop where we bought some great ribeye steaks for the grill. It's about a 60 mile round trip from Panguitch to the end of Bryce Canyon, and is also a pretty good climb up to 10,000 feet. The canyon consists of several "amphitheaters" cut into the limestone along the eastern edge of ... read more

One of my life long goals has been to run a marathon. Before my mission I was signed up and training to run the Alaska marathon with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. However funds fell through and I left on my mission before I could run the race. But this goal has always been in the back of my mind. A few weeks ago I was talking to my good friend Maria about what was new in her life and she mentioned this half marathon in Moab that she was going to do… so I checked it out and entered my application. I was one of the lucky ones chosen to run the race as not all applicants get in! Training has been a bit of a struggle but finally race day came. I had gone ... read more

First overnight stop out of ABQ was Farmington, in Northwestern NM. This is our gateway to Four Corners and Monument Valley. Most of this country is Indian reservation, and there are lots of wide open spaces. Out of Farmington early for the short drive to 4 Corners. Not much to see here except the monument and Indian Vendors selling mostly jewelry, but it is a unique geographical spot. We then headed west along the Arizona/Utah border to Monument Valley. Wow. We have never seen such scenery. These huge formations rising from a relatively flat valley floor in brilliant color just overpower you. You expect John Wayne to come riding up at any moment. (Many of his films were shot here.) This is by far the most impressive area we've seen so far. We stayed overnight in ... read more

Hola mis amigos y familia - I hope everyone is well Well it has been a little while since my last blog so I wanted to update everyone on what is going on out here in my neck of the woods. The season here is coming to an end quickly. I survived another PIB "invasion" - People in Black, the people who come in for the Sundance film festival ( click here for the full size pictures). This festival i only drove around a few stars: scarlet johansen, Dennis hopper, Bruce Hornsby ... none of which tipped!!! Today I am suppose to close on the sale of my house which will make me officially homeless. Though I think I have been "homeless" for 8 years since I have been on a "trip" for the last eight ... read more

Note: we wrote this over a week ago but Amy just realized it was never published. Oops! Kyoto will hopefully be up in a day or 2. Before leaving on our around the world trip we made visits to Roger’s parents in Southern Utah and Amy’s in Kansas City, Kansas. Both trips were great fun and it was very nice to spend uninterrupted time with out families before taking off for the year. Both visits also passed way too quickly and it was very hard to say goodbye to our parents. Our first day in Utah was spent in Nevada in the booming gambling village of Mesquite. We holed up at one of the four local casinos to eat, watch the Super Bowl, eat, gamble, and eat. It’s a pretty nice way to pass the day. ... read more

I woke up from the camp site and enjoyed the beautiful mountain morning with the sunrise. After a little bit more exploration, I realized that there was a natural arch just behind my camp site. The mountain was beautiful bathing under the morning sunlight. The tempreture warmed up quickly with the sun. I truely enjoyed the camping experience here at the Devils Garden's camp ground. No wonder it was usually fully booked from March to November. I was really glad that I could experience it. With a long drive planned today, I quickly packed everything and drove off. I enjoyed the final view of the arches and rocks on the way out of the park. My next stop was the four corners monument, where the four states (Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico) met. After three ... read more

Having had a hearty breakfast (sauage omelette with pancakes) at the Pancake Haus - next to the Ramada Motel that I stayed in last night, I headed my way to the Arches National Park. There were some hikings to do today, and I wanted to make sure I had enough energy. The last time when I was in Utah (years ago), we didn't make it to the Arches. I always wanted to see the famous arch that was on a lot of postcards and calendars. I found out last night from the local that the name of that famous arch was 'Delicate Arch'. It was the state symbol of Utah. There would be a 2 hours round trip hike to get to the Delicate Arch from the trail head. I was excited that I finally could ... read more

After 2 days in Las Vegas, I took a Greyhound night bus to Salt Lake City. The ride was about 9 hours long, and unlike the trip from Vancouver to Edmonton, there were no mountains and no snow, so the scenary out of the window was pitch black. I arrived at the Salt Lake City Greyhound depot at around 7am. To my surprise, the bus stopped at a brand new depot, instead of the downtown depot (as mentioned in my Lonely Planet guide). Luckily, the new depot is not very far from downtown. When I arrived, the sky was still dark and the weather was cold, so I stayed in the depot to have my breakfast and upload my LV photos into my laptop. At 8am, the sun was rising, so I put my luggage in ... read more
