So, since we enjoyed Lake Powell and were told we could take the dogs in the lake off-leash, we decided to stay another night here. We hung out in the morning, fussing with this and photos, so go back to the previous journals as we have added some more photos to those. We headed out to the lake around 1:00 or so, weather was nice, but we were reminded very quickly how windy the desert is. While Kathryn had the dogs in the water, Beth had her skin resurfaced!! It turned out that we had to keep the dogs on leash, which is why it looks like Kathryn is plowing the fields in the lake! The kept trying to play fight in the water and getting tangled up. We finally put their long leads on them ... read more

LDS anyone? Utah was really pretty. Have been there before, but it was nice to go back. Heh, we went into the Mormon Temple and there was four of us (3 girls and 1 guy) and the guy that was working there looked at all of us and said "Good afternoon ladies!!" Hahaha how I laughed.... read more

When it got over 100 degrees, we started longing for the Northwest. June in the Northwest is often chilly, with its share of rainy days, and is only sometimes sunny. The idea that it's over 100 in Utah in early June is sort of overwhelming—and it's only going to get hotter. Lance even started talking wistfully about the high Sierras, so perhaps that was the sign that we should leave the Southwest--all a good reminder of why I normally never plan trips to Utah for my summer vacation. We barely made it through our last night in Utah, driving up above the Zion valley floor to camp out at higher elevation, Lance collapsing into the passenger seat after stripping to a bear minimum of clothing. We went back to Zion National Park, it's true, but only ... read more

May 25 Day 11 Green River, Co to Vernal, Ut I guess you can call this a vacation day. Our day consisted of driving about 3 hours to Vernal, checking into our hotel, then reading and napping the day away. Vernal is the gateway to Dinosaur National Park. As we drive down the main street many of the signs are dinosaur related. Of course, we are staying at the Best Western Dinosaur Inn and just down the highway is the Dinosaur Museum (a must-see, I am told). We are in the Utahame Basin, a huge expanse of nothing to see except mounds of grey like-dirt and dry creeks and the ubiquitious desert scrup. We did climb a mountain pass and got stuck behind a truck going about 5 miles per hour for quite a while - ... read more

May 24 Day 10 Grand Jct Arches NP Dead Horse Pt Green River, Ut. We left Grand Jct around 9:30 after loading up on the Best Western's fine breakfast. In just a few minutes we are heading west on Interstate 70 where the speed limit is 75 and most everone is going faster than that, including the trucks. It's 35 miles to our next turn and I never touched the gas pedal almost all the way. Stick it at 80 and that's it. We crossed the state line and entered Utah. We turned south on Hwy 131 for about one hour and entered the county seat, Moab. It's a good sized town with all the amenities, including an excellent MacDonald's and an automatic car wash which I used to clean off the encrusted bugs on the ... read more

C: Today we woke again in the backcountry of RMNP as Reece has taken to calling it. The sun was already rising high but rain was misting from the sky in parts….I decided to climb the “rabbit ears” as Reece had done yesterday….it was an adventure I didn’t want to miss. The wind was crazy & I certainly questioned my senses and sanity at certain points but after pausing to gain the final bravery to step over small cravass before the last boulder I knew it was worth it. Time stopped (just not the wind). The sun to the east shining through the misting rain cast a rainbow down on the valley to the west. Unfortunately the photos do not do it justice (I suppose a polarizing light filter would have helped), but the rainbow looked ... read more

Hi Everyone, Today we went to Salt Lake City, Utah. It is quite a nice city, very clean, easy to get around in city. But there is one catch…it is the single most religious place on earth. Walking around the city and especially Temple Square, there are sisters walking around to educate you about the Mormon faith. I know that they have their beliefs and that is all right with me, but it is really weird to be approached on the street. The sisters are dressed in street clothes but have nametags on that identifies them. We almost got roped into visiting the Mormon Church museum and watching an informational video!! It was mob mentality. Overall, we liked Salt Lake City but we decided to check out Park City, Utah instead. Park City is very well ... read more

Day 18: Frey Canyon to Monticello, UT Total Miles: 76.6 (1206.8mi total) We awoke around 6 (a little later than we'd hoped) just in time to see Randy and Scott coming up the hill toward us (they bivied at Hite and started at 3AM to beat the heat) - another coincidental encounter with them ... funny how we keep running into them at exactly the right time. Arthur and I rallied hard today all the way to Blanding - a steep ride it was (Comb Wash was my favorite - a super steep drop for miles into this wash, then a climb out - our timing was perfect and the climb was shaded the entire way). We hung out in Blanding for a few hours - Scott and Randy caught up with us, we all enjoyed ... read more

Hi Everyone, I know I have been updating this journal every day (hopefully you're not getting sick of reading them) but everyday there is just something so beautiful. Yesterday we spent the day in Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park. They are both in southern utah about 30 minutes from each other so we spent half a day in each. Bryce Canyon was so much more beautiful than I thought. The Canyon was so vast and colorful. The rocks were bright orange, red, yellow, with a backdrop of lush green trees and snow capped mountains. Our first stop was the Bryce Amphithreatre that included Inspiration, Sunset, and Sunrise Point. While we were there a thunder and lighting storm was off in the distance. YOu could actually see the lighting strikes down into the canyon. ... read more
