Day 14 - August 18, 2006 It was very hard to get out of bed so early today (6:30am), but when we got over to Bryce Canyon Lodge, and then to the horse corral, we got very excited. The cowboys (chaps and all) were very careful in pairing us up with the "right" horse. (Of course only Scott and Austin had horses, the rest of us mules. Mules are a mix of a horse and donkey. They are also sterile, but extremely surefooted.) Steve, our trail guide, assured us that only those animals that wouldn't step off the side of the mountain were chosen for these trips. I'm sure I don't know why (it certainly wasn't warranted), but my mule Tonya REALLY liked going near the edge of the trail. This was really scary until I ... read more

Day 13 - August 17, 2006 Today we headed to Canyonlands National Park. We passed Horsethief Campgrounds, don't know why. It had a dirt road, and we're not trying any of those. Traveling in a RV is not exactly what I thought it would be. The noise from the road and stuff inside rattling make it too hard to read aloud to the kids or even to Scott in the front seat. I grew hoarse everyday trying to do it, and basically have given it up. Same goes for listening to books on CD. It's also hard for the kids to read in the RV because of all the swaying (or is it Scott's crazy driving, he does a good imitation of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride sometimes!) Most of the storage is unavailable while the RV ... read more

Day 12 - August 16, 2006 Today we went to Arches National Park. There are over 2200 arches, more are discovered each year. If you come and discover a new one, then you can name it. We finally found a National Parks Passport for the kids (we've already been to four parks). Each park has its own stamp and cancellation mark. We set out to drive into the park to view the sights and also make a couple of hikes to some of the arches (many cannot be viewed from the road). The arches and rock formations are so large that most cannot be adequately viewed from a RV, or even car or minivan. We drove past everything, however, to start at the back of the park and hike to Landscape Arch. This arch is longer ... read more

Day 11 - August 15, 2006 This morning dawned incredibly bright and early (probably too bright and early!) but at least we were not freezing. (The low was only in the lower 60s.) Most of us tried out the KOA's shower facilities and I can tell you that you definitely do want to keep your flip flops on in the shower. But at least we could keep the water running during the entire shower. Then it was "on the road again". We made our first stop at Four Corners via New Mexico. This is a place where one can stand in one spot and be standing in four state simultaneously. The four states are New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado. We also bought some "authentic" Navajo Frybread. It tasted like donuts made from biscuits in a ... read more

The past two days have certainly been chock full -o- scenic goodness! We left our campsite in Moab and made a stop in at Wicked Brew Coffee Drive Through to load up on our favorite caffeinated beverages before hitting the road. The highways we traveled through Utah had great views out every window. The speed limit was 75 and the roads were empty so between our many stops for pictures we were able make great time across the state (staying within the speed limit of course!). Our first stop on Tuesday was Goblin Valley State Park. The main features of this park are amazing mushroom-shaped rock formations that are referred to as “goblins.” Walking among them truly feels like navigating a martian landscape! We decided to brave the afternoon heat and sun for a quick 1.5 ... read more

We woke up bright and early Saturday morning and headed out to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This park is not one of the most well known National Parks but is definitely one that should be visited more often! The skies were cloudy so we did not know how much of it we would actually be able to see. As we entered the park, we encountered thick fog and wondered if we would even be able to see the road! Soon we were above the clouds and had decent visibility. The sun even cooperated and broke through the clouds long enough for us to snap a few good pictures. While we were in the park, we did a drive along the south rim, stopping to take pictures at multiple overlooks. We then descended ... read more

24th July to 1st August 2006 I crossed the Stateline in to Utah without even knowing it. If there was a sign I missed it but, I suspect there wasn't one. I am getting used to the fact that there is a distinct lack of signage here. Miss the mileage sign stating the distance to the next town and the following one you're likely to see will be declaring its name as you enter it (even if it is fifty/sixty/a hundred miles away)! I was sick at missing this one, though, as I wanted a picture of my first exit/entry point between states. Never mind. It was a relatively short ride from Page, Arizona to Kanab, Utah so, I had the remainder of the day to get myself up to Zion National Park. As you will ... read more

Plan on spending at least a few hours in the park, exploring the scenic drive and several of the viewpoints and short trails. If time permits, longer hikes lead to many spectacular rock formations, including Delicate Arch, and the Devils Garden Campground provides an excellent base camp for multi-day trips. Also, consider attending an interpretive program. Guided walks, short talks and campfire programs are offered daily March through October. Arches is open year-round, 24 hours a day. The visitor center is open daily during the following hours: April through October: 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. November through March: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The visitor center is closed on December 25th. I had a nice time in Jackson, WY. I managed to upload a bunch of pictures at the hostel and I rode my bike to the post office (about 5 miles) to got some more postcard stamps. Then I got an overpriced ½ sub (all the food is overpriced here) and went to the park with my mp3 player, book and sub and sat there for over 3 hours. It was such a beautiful day. Not at all warm in the shade. Perfect. Later in evening, I hung out some with my new friend, Beverly, and this guy that was working here for the season. He is Mexican and doesn’t speak much English, so we exchanged some language knowledge. I left the hostel at 0730 yesterday and bee lined it (no pun intended to LDS') to ... read more

I wrote this bit of blog before we left civilization. Don’t get me wrong, it was great to leave it for a bit but I didn’t think it would be two weeks before I could connect again (or even get my cell phone to work). Anyway, I’ll post this first and then I’ll try and describe what the next two weeks were like (through memory and feeling) as I didn’t write one word in that beautiful place. It was a bit of a frustrating day. We left for Salt Lake early but could not seem to make any time. We stopped at a Saturn dealership and they didn’t carry the part we needed, then we stopped at an RV store and guess what, they didn’t carry the part we needed, and so on and so forth. ... read more
