Day 17 - Hanksville to Frey Canyon Total Miles: 76 (1130.2mi. total) 4AM - time to wake up. We started riding in the dark to beat the heat - a really nice way to start the day. The landscape changes so much here during sunrise … from purple to orange to red, how beautiful the rock is! About 30 miles from Hanksville I decided it was time to put on some shades, it was then that I realized that I left my sunglasses at Blondies. Being the creative person that I am, I wrote a detailed note to Blondies asking them to send them to me general delivery if they found them and flagged down the next car going in that direction (cars come about once every 15 minutes on this road) and asked them to ... read more

Well folks - I think I got my days screwed up and just found this unpublished journal. Day 6 - May 20 Monument Valley, Four Corners, Cortez, Colorado Leaving Mexican Hat at 9am, we deferred breakfast until we reached Kayenta, about 1 hour away. We didn't want to take a chance on breakfast in Mexican Hat after our gormet dinner last night. Then around a bend, up a grade and THERE IT IS!!! Monument Valley. This is what I wanted to see. All those cowboy movies - John Wayne, the prairie scooners, covered wagons, kids walking alongside the wagon with their dog, men or horseback returning from a scouting mission telling the leader the best way to go. All those scenarie os flashed through my mind as I gazed out on Monument Valley. I looks just ... read more

well.... let me just say i should be careful what i wish for. We had been complaining AND COMPLAINING about the cold weather... and now it's 97 degrees and i'm in the desert, no shade, no wind, only sand. it's lovely! haha. But, we are having fun. Apparently there is something "weird" about two women (girls) going on a cross country trip and camping together! We get about looks from everyone at the campground when we try to check it, and sometimes they even offer to put us way in the back so we can have "privacy"! i want to scream from the top of my lungs, NO!!! PLEASE PUT ME NEXT TO MEN... SINGLE MEN!! but i don't. so i have no started referring to Laura as my cousin, just so it clears up any ... read more

Hi Everyone, Today we visited Arches National Park in Moab, Utah and of course I wanted to update my friends and family. In case you were wondering the title of this blog refers to the crispy fried color of my skin after being in Utah for only 1 day. The sun sure is hot out here and by the way the dry heat does not make a difference. We headed off early to try to beat the heat and take some hikes is moderate temperatures, no such luck! It was about 75 at 8:00 am. The park itself has about 1,000 arches, it was amazes me that so much beauty can be in one location. Our first major stop was to the North and South Window Arch. The hike to reach these arches is about 1.5 ... read more

Day 16 - Boulder to Hanksville, UT Total Miles: 86.4 (1054.2 miles total) Another day riding, another challenge … mission accomplished (till tomorrow when it all starts over again). A surprisingly pleasant day - we made it to the summit of Boulder mountain quicker and more easily than we anticipated. As we summited, the ominous storm clouds that had been looming all day decided to burst, hail and lightening and scary riding conditions for us. We spent the first half of the day hopping from campground to campground, enjoying hot chocolate and tea and good conversation with the different camp hosts - thanks to everyone who helped us out today! The afternoon brought less rain ( we saw a forest fire started by a bolt of lightening) but the clouds loomed all afternoon providing fantastic shade ... read more

No, Pat, we didn't get lost. I was just too tired to write anything this night and the gol-danged internet connection didn't work in our room. May 18 - Day 4 - Las Vegas, Zion, Bryce Cyn The drive on I15 going east from Vegas is nothing but straight road for miles and miles. The only things to look at are the mountains far to the east that we will get to in good time. It doesn't take long to leave Vegas and its suburbs since most of Vegas has grown towards the south. We won't hear a word from the GPS lady for over a hundred miles. Within 15 minutes we are in the desert again, cruise control set at 80 and not much traffic at 9am this morning. After about one hour we stop ... read more

Day 15 Cannonville, UT to Boulder Town Miles 65.4 (967.8 total) Wow, we sure got our behinds handed to us today. I felt terrible from the beginning, as we climbed toward Escalante my legs resisted; my entire body had a hard time moving forward. It’s been getting progressively hotter - 14% grades aren’t easy in this heat. Around 1 pm we began to climb up from the Escalante River - big mistake. This was by far the hardest climb of the trip, poor timing on our part starting it mid day. I wish we had spent some time in the river, instead we began the 14% climb. The heat was so draining, although the country through that area it phenomenal, it was difficult to enjoy the sites with the climb in front of us. The nearest ... read more

Day 14 - Cedar City, UT to Cannonville, UT Total Miles: 86.7 (902.4mi total) Ah, the much dreaded climb out of Cedar City - not nearly as bad as the dreadful elevation profile made it seem, but an 18 mile climb nevertheless. We started around 5:30 worried that it would take awhile. Right as we were turning on to the main road in Cedar City, we ran into these guys, Randy and Scott, father and son cross country tourers, who we had met in Davis. It was a strange coincidence to bump into them that early in the morning, especially since they informed us in Davis that they would be doing serious miles and wouldn’t see us again (we told them our pace would be about 75 a day) unless something went terribly wrong (I remember ... read more

Hi Well today I was intending to fly out from Denver to Casper in the early afternoon. The airline operates by assigning you a seat at the boarding desk rather than the computer doing it where you check in! So 30 mins before I was to board they told me and 7 other passengers that we couldn't board the 30 seater aeroplane to Casper, due to some ridiculous excuse about weight restrictions!! So after arguing this for half an hour or so, i eventually ended up with the airline booking me on a route via Salk Lake City that night or I could 'maybe' fly out in the morning 18 hours later direct to Casper!! So off I went off to Utah and despite the stress and waiting around I was rewarded with magnificent scenery between ... read more

Day 13 - Rest day in Cedar City Although we felt like we should take a rest day due to all the riding we’ve been doing, we found ourselves feeling like we should be out on our bikes going more miles. I suppose the whole riding everyday thing becomes a bit addictive. We spent most of the day missing Tris and trying to get used to him not being with us anymore. We’ve spent the majority of the last year with him (literally -iving together, recreating together, and working together) and have gotten pretty used to it being the three of us (Arthur, Tris and I), it’s sad not knowing the next time we’ll see him. Tris, we love you and miss you very much!... read more
