Bill and I have been staying in the Grand Staircase Escalante/Paria-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness since March 11, 2005. We are finding it difficult to leave this spectacular place even though our volunteer jobs are completed. We thought you'd like to see some of the more spectacular places here.... read more

St. George's weather is so much warmer than northern Utah around Salt Lake City, that they call it "Dixie". The Mormon's grew cotton here during the Civil War when they couldn't get cotton from the Southeast. Brigham Young had his winter home in St. George. Jim and I visited it and Jacob Hamblin's pioneer home. It was quite interesting to hear the history of the local Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saint's (LDS). We attended a performance of the Southwest Utah Symphony. It was a pops concert with 3 tenors. We have enjoyed some very good concerts and plays everywhere we have gone, which gives us a good idea of what is available. Pittsburgh's still at the top. I did decide to do "the hill" and I have done it many times. The ... read more

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined” . - Thoreau LINK Outdoor Outlet We had an early start on Friday and drove about 70-80 miles north to the northern end of Zion Park. It’s a little known and little used - it’s called Kolob Canyon, and we took the scenic drive up to the top and had our breakfast. We were the only ones there. Yes, there were mosquitoes; I couldn’t believe it. It was about 6,000 feet high. We tried to catch the sun coming up over the canyons, but it was the wrong angle, but still very beautiful. We did a hike on the Taylor Creek Stream and we had about 4 stream crossings. Wow, the water was cold, you could barely stand in it long enough ... read more

On our way to St. George, we passed through northwestern New Mexico stopping at El Malpais and Inscription Rock National Monuments. El Malpais was molten volcanic basalt, (miles and miles of it,) that had bubbled up in seemingly strange piles of rock and then stopped, forever. Inscription Rock was just that, with a pool of water that attracted travelers for thousands of years. They each added their own grafitti to it, telling many stories. In Marble Canyon, Arizona, we came across what I had been looking for for a long time, desert wildflowers at their peak. It was mile after mile of a garden in full bloom. I had not known how mountainous this corner of Utah is. Red rock mesas stick up at rather odd angles everywhere. Nearby is Zion National Park. We have a ... read more

Driving across Nevada was a very boring experience for all drivers concerned - 9 hours of nothingness. It even had the cheek to rain. The endless miles of desert changed into miles of Salt plains the minute we crossed into Utah - very bizarre. Passed the site of where the land speed record is held (but even Chuck resisted the urge to upstage it!!). Park City is gorgeous - an old mining town that outstripped Heavenly by miles. Our first day saw us coming face to face with deep powder, blizzards, white outs and queues of people!!!!!!!!!!! How rude! Slept well that night!! Sara opted for another lesson on Park City slopes while Gill and and I donned our posh pants and headed to the boarder free resort of Deer Valley - 5 mins away from ... read more

The weather is a fickle beast, I’ve seen nothing but sun for weeks now, and to be honest the big yellow thing in the sky has never caused such frustration for me. Don’t mean to start things off on a negative note, but it’s the truth. Here’s the latest from my travels. So last I wrote I had been in Bozeman for about a week, and had done that great trip to Cooke City, so I guess I’ll begin there. The next week didn’t hold too much adventure, just many a ski day up at Bridger, and some prepping for the group that came up to Montana for the ski trip this year. Oh, I also joined a ceramics class. Bozeman struck me as a fairly artsy place for a town up in the middle of ... read more

Tomorrow Katherine and I will be headed back to Memphis. This area is under a snow warning tonight and tomorrow morning. We're taking the shuttle to Salt Lake City Airport, so Pam doesn't have to worry about drivng us in the snow. Pam was checking the weather on TV today, and the 7-day forecast was funny: snow every day...except Friday which was a wintry mix.... read more

We watched the news last night and they said it would be 20 degrees farenheit at 8:00 this morning, but it wasn't. When we left the house at 8:30 it was 4 degrees. So cold! Pam took the day off to go sightseeing with us, but she had to go in for a meeting at 9:00, so Katherine and I went with her. Katherine finger painted Pam’s office, while she was in her meeting. Then we all went home and ate lunch. When Katherine woke up from her afternoon nap, it was only 14 degrees outside, so we didn’t feel like doing much sightseeing. We did go to the public library, nice and warm. Then we drove to the tabernacle, ran out of the car, snapped a picture and jumped back into the car. For dinner ... read more
