Logan is a very nice city, but I think Pam misses Knoxville. She wants to paint her living room orange. Last night we had a garbage disposal mishap, but with cunning and teamwork, Pam and I were able to overcome it. Things started going wrong for Pam early in the day, and when she returned home from work, she brought her bad luck with her. She broiled some salmon for us, but when she poured vinegar over the hot salmon, a fierce pungent fishy-vinegar gas filled the kitchen and stung our eyes. Pam had a really difficult time, she had to leave dinner to flush her eyes out with eye drops. We opened the windows in the kitchen and the front door, despite the freezing temperatures, but Pam still had to leave to get out of ... read more

I’m just sitting here watching the snow fall outside the window, sipping hot chocolate (full of marshmallows...real marshmallows, not the powdery freeze-dried kind) from Pam’s pink “wired woman!” mug. It snowed a little last night, and it’s been snowing a little today. Katherine and I went out in the morning. I guess I thought I could walk on top of two feet of snow, but I can’t. I fell through, which was unfortunate because I was only wearing sneakers (the kind with mesh on the sides to let your feet “breathe” when you work out). That’s the only pair of shoes I have right now, because most of my stuff is on it’s way to Germany. Getting your shoes wet in Utah is a big deal if you only have one pair of shoes, but I ... read more

Katherine and I got up early this morning to catch our plane to Dallas/Fort Worth and then Salt Lake City. The flights went really well. Katherine was awake for all of the first flight, but she fell asleep right as the plane was landing on the second flight, so she was in a little bit of a daze when we got off the plane, but she recognized Aunt Pamela right away. When we arrived at Pam’s house in Logan, Katherine started dancing and flapping her arms like crazy, and that’s how she spent most of the evening. I guess she’s happy to be here. The mountains are snow-covered and beautiful. I left the cords to connect the camera in Katie’s room, and she’s asleep now, so I’ll have to add pictures later. I’m really happy to ... read more

Awoke to bombs again. No interlodge so I had breakfast, grabbed my gear and skied to the lift. I got third chair up and after another race across the traverse I had first tracked in a chute called Stone Crusher. It was wind buffed, but still knee deep and smooth. Unfortunetly, my heel, which had hurt the dat before due to new boots, was really hurting so I had to stop after 3 nice pow runs. I was releated to watching the new storm system cover Mt. Superior while sitting in the hot tub. I am now sitting in the lodge and its dumping out. It hasn't stopped snowing for 3 days!! This next storm is rumored to drop another 1-3ft with another, even bigger storm right behind it which will probably bring another couple feet. ... read more

I couldn't sleep all night. I kept waking up thinking it was 7am (my normal wake up time). I started hearing bombs going off around 7 so I knew it was time. A note on bombs. Ski patrol uses old 105mm recoiless rifles to fire shells into the mountain that then detonate to try to release slides. Avalanche control work is not only done for the safety of the skiers, but for safety of the buildings and roads. Earlier that morning guests on the northern wing facing the road were told to evacuate their rooms because avalanche control work would begin soon. They are evacuated because with a lot of snow, avalanches can slide all the way down the mountain, across the road, and into the Peruvian lodge. Employees who live in another building were told ... read more

Waking up to Bombs can only mean one thing. Powder! and lots of it. We lined up early at the Collins lift and spotted pro skiers Sage and Matt Collins. The lift attendant called "First Row" and the rush was on. I got one of the first couple chairs up and once at the top, raced across the high traverse. Before I go further let me explain what the High traverse (other names include the High T, and High boy) is. The High T is basically a highway for skiers. Skiers traverse across an entire bowl and the traverse acceses some of the best terrain on the mountain. Because of that fact, on a powder day it becomes a high speed race course in which the likely hood of getting run down by a local very ... read more

We left from Boston Dec 26th. Alta is located in Little Cottonwood Canyon just outside Salt Lake City, Utah. We are staying at the Peruvian which is right at the base of Alta and has beautiful views of Mount Superior. On the drive up, 10-12ft snow banks were all that remained after a huge controlled avalanche let go from Mt. Superior. Just finished my second day of skiing and things are looking good. A 2 week drought has kept new snow fall to a minimum. The weather shows a good bit of snow coming. The locals haven't skied powder in 2 weeks, so there is definetly a buzz in the air. ... read more

On our day off we decided to go horseback riding at Hell’s Backbone. The ride up and down the canyons was beautiful. Old Bob did great, this was his first time on a horse. We thoroughly enjoyed the horse ride, the scenery and the folks at the ranch. After lunch we were off to Burr Trail. We found the “Gulch” and hiked for an hour or so. The drive on Burr Trail is, at the risk of repeating myself, wonderful. We even found a slot canyon and stopped to investigate and take a few pictures. Before our day off ended, we drove into Escalante and hiked the trail with petrified wood—Escalante State Park. It was already! Getting dark, so we grabbed a pizza and headed back to Calf Creek. ... read more

Boulder / Escalante Utah Today we are on our way to Boulder UT. A stop at the Anasazi Museum was very worthwhile. The video was exceptionally well done and traced the history of the Puebloan People as hunters/gathers and how they developed a sophisticated society of people farming, hunting and building. Highway 12 is beautiful, it winds up and down the mountains showing off the aspens. However, the area from Boulder to Escalante is what the locals call “hogback”. We are actually driving on the top a ridge looking down at the canyons on both sides, not good if you are bothered by vertigo. The scenery is just astounding. We located CALF CREEK CAMPGROUND and the host was expecting us - part of the American Hiking Society. We keep learning about the Sprinter—the propane works well ... read more
