About two weeks ago I was chatting with a friend on Facebook messenger. Shooting the breeze, I inquired of her whereabouts these days. She said all over, she explained she was on a worldwide trip flying by the seat of her canvas pants, currently headed to meet our friend Jeremy in Uruguay. Envy spread and it occurred to me I can make this pipe dream a reality and escape from my dreary work-a-day life for awhile if I carefully plan and budget for a couple years. Initial reaction of my far-fetched plans ranged from excitement to dubious skepticism, and flat out disapproval. We won't name names. Well, little else to report as of now, still probably 22 months at minimum from my departure date. Time to save money, and conjure up blog material.... read more

"We will now be arriving at the Big DFW" - And boy is it big... 5 terminals with a monorail going around... which was quite a good way to kill time cause it seems a bit old and rickitty so it was a little bit like a roller coaster. Walking aimlessly around the airport we noticed that 1 food place was getting so many customers. We kept seeing people even sitting around the airport eating this "Popeyes Chicken". So we thought let try some. If you would like to try chicken that makes you think that KFC is a gourmet meal... then go to Popeyes. DFW - Every international airport I have been to you can go to most stores and pay with any major currency... Not here... wouldn´t even accept GBP at the duty free ... read more

*This was written on the plane from Columbia, SC to Dallas/Ft. Worth at 7:20 am. I was surviving on 3 hours of sleep.* "This is how the world ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper." IF you've never seen a sunrise from an airplane, above the giant fleece blanket of dewdrops known as the cloud line, then you haven't lived. Some of the most beautiful scenes of my life have been from an airplane. Like the fireworks that flashed like tiny Christmas lights above Portland, OR on the 4th of July, when I was returning home from Summer Staff. All this only to remind me of how lucky and blessed I am; all that God allows me, how can I ever give enough thanks. We're outrunning the sunrise, trying to beat time. Listening to ... read more

Whew! I can't believe that day one of my trip is already over. It was a pretty long day as I didn't take off from Alabama until around 8:30am. And it was a very hot day, around 105 if you include the heat index and one of my arms got really sunburnt. Not much to report today, just the exciting life of solo roadtrips. I've come to decide a good roadtrip starts with finding a good country radio station, a couple bottles of water, and a full tank of gas before hitting a busy interstate. I started out in Tuscaloosa and continued to weave my way down to Mississippi (even to Jackson where I thought of Mandi and sang out to some Johnny Cash) and saw the mighty Mississippi River. Then you can tell when you ... read more

Our car was due back in Dallas in 6 days and we had a lot of miles to cover as the outward part of the trip had taken us farther than we originally planned. When we woke in Dubois it was snowing again although it didn't last and the sun soon came out as we had a quick look around the small cowboy town. The most interesting thing to see was the Jackalope exhibit in the nearby gas station. The Jackalope is a very rare creature (kind of like the Haggis in Scotland) which is like a large rabbit with antlers and we were lucky enough to get the chance to see one in captivity (see the photo). We drove through the Wind River Indian reservation to Casper where we spent the night in a cabin ... read more
