Wow its actually time to leave... I can´t beleive it. 5 weeks ago the decision was finally made to go to South America for 3 months. After careful planning (NOT!!!!) the plan extends to 5 months. So its been a month of allot of work... finalising our job, finalising our house (am I sick of talking to the customer retention teams of all the organisations that you just want to phone and cancel the service they provide for your house.... the pain the pain), packing the house and moving all the boxes to our dear friends Mr and Mrs Bridges basement (all praise to Cal; for he has the might and the power of the basement ... love ya mate), finding a place to store the car (Chris - ya are a Legend!!!). Oh and the ... read more

Just a couple of hours to go until we catch our bus and head to Rio. We´ve checked, doublé and triple checked the time and the tickets so all going well in the morning we´ll be in Rio de Janeiro and ready for Carnival on Saturday. Can´t wait.......we´ll keep you posted. Oh, and we´ve decided to stay on an extra month so it´ll be 6 months all up. ... read more

We take a train ride to Morretes which is only around 40kms away but we aren´t exactly breaking any speed records. The railway was built back in 1885 to connect Curitiba to the coast 75kms away which used to take 2 days to reach by road when transporting products to the port. 67 bridges and viaducts, 13 tunnels through granite mountainsides and they made it. The scenery along the way of jungle covered peaks, plenty of banana trees full of ready to pick fruit was a nice break from the city. A relaxing lunch by the river and we catch the bus back to town.... read more

With just under 2 weeks to go until Carnival it´s time for a well deserved rest from all this travelling. We need to recharge our batteries before some serious mayhem in Rio. Yes, I´m sure you all have no sympathy for us whatsoever but backpacking is actually tiring and at times stressful (the biggest violins you can find please, altogether now). Our chosen destination is Ihla de Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. We step off our overnight bus (yes another one!) at Florianópolis, the gateway to the island and get approached by a guy who introduces himself as Alejandro and tells he can help us with accommodation on the south of the island where we are heading. We just need to pay him 10 reis for the petrol to drive us there. We decline and then ... read more

The Brazillian side of the falls was equally spectacular but not quite a up close. The highlight was wondering down a path where Dejan noticed a man stopped and starring at a mound of dirt next to the path..... Oh yeah!!!! Tarantula.......the big hairy scary kind you see on the Discovery Channel and in pet shops. He was BIG!!! I mean as big as your hand and very hairy. Terry starts walking and it sent a shiver down Deb’s spine. Makes any jungle type áreas now very creepy. Dejan was changing lenses and getting right up close for the macro shot when this impatient lady with a long skirt breaks through the crowd which had gathered and pushes past, brushing her skits on the tarântula. Déb yelled out a shreik and Terry started running a bit. ... read more

It´s amazing how much the scenery hás changed this far up north to lush, green and tropical which also means it´s now not only hot but very humid. After arriving at 10am we find a hostel and hit the tourist info and find basically there is the waterfalls and the 3 frontiers to see and thats pretty much it. As we knew we were doing the falls the next day we headed to the 3 frontiers. The Três Frontiers which is a lookout point on the Iguazu river where you can see the Brazil about 50 meters across the river and Paraguay about 300 meters to the left. Its not every day you stand on the border of 3 countries. The next day we got up early (8am) and headed to the bus to Iguazu Falls.... ... read more
