“Come to think of it, Rich, we’ve never been to a game over there”, Zack reflected when I firmly broached the subject. Whether he and Penny decided to join us would never sway my plans to drag Phillip ninety plus miles to a AA baseball game. “Good, then you’re in?” “Yeah, we’ll do it!” Under other circumstances, I’d mention that he should ask Penny, but instincts told me she would be on board. “We just have to make a stop at a Lexus dealership to pick up a garage door opener that was forgotten.” Uh oh, problem here. When it comes to baseball, I do not fool around. To arrive late for a game would ruin the night for me. It is almost as repugnant as leaving before the final out, even if one team has ... read more

Today we ventured on the freeways trying to find "Long's Drug Store" which we learned isn't "really" a Longs. Reminded me of Woolworths that had a dining area. I looked for custard pie but alas there is no going back. Richard took Makai to Gatlinburg for rehearsal and I sauntered to the co-op for fresh ingredients for supper. Am set for some Apple trainings later in the week. Spooky helped me. Marcel was recovering from a midnight brawl with a neighborhood cat.... she held her own pretty good!... read more

So my next leg was another four days of riding, but only ~275 miles this time. Elaine got me prepared by taking me to an art/wine fair the night before I left, and I has happy to oblige her. Southern IL and and KY have been nice and hilly, and forest took over what in most of IL was endless cornfields. I also got on to the Trans Am (a popular cross country route with many cyclists going coast to coast) so I ran into many other folks traveling by bike, though most were travelling west. I spent some time on a bike path off route, where I encountered loads of wildlife including some kind of wild cat (possibly a bobcat, but seemed a little smaller ~40lbs). The next few days were much the same with ... read more

Thursday...heading up a hill, clank, broken spoke. Down the road, clank, two broken spokes. Rain sets in, and I start walking. 4 miles and a few hours later walking my bike, a truck comes up and takes me down the most beautiful canyon. Pro's I was out of the rain walking my bike, Con's I missed out cruising down the beautiful Appalachian canyon. Russell apparently went down to Damascus VA and paid some local bike shop dude to come get me. Forever grateful. So this brings us to Larry Tow, Ben and the hiking group from Michigan, Linda and Tom with the scout group. Larry was a folk who had been living on the Appalachian trail for three years. He made Russ and I breakfast, and not just any breakfast. Potatoes with mixed green peppers, garlic, ... read more

It's hard to believe that almost exactly one year ago I left for Japan... Since it's just around the time of my one year anniversary of departing, I have definitely been thinking more and more about my experience that semester at Kansai Gaidai. And do you know what I realized? That I never wrote anything to conclude my trip! I guess I just got really busy towards the end of the semester, having to pack everything up and get ready to go back home. It was a very stressfult time too, and I had so many different thoughts and emotions going through my head that I just forgot about my poor little travel blog! I thought I would finish it when I got home, but as soon as I was back I was busy spending time ... read more

In the course of this class I discovered that my sustainability ethic is closely related to my personal path of spirituality with the Bahá'í Faith. Sustainability is very much tied to the idea of anthropogenic global warming that is a scientific issue not a political issue. If as a Bahá'í I believe in the harmony of science and religion it is my duty to listen to the warnings of scientists and do my part to ensure the advancement of humanity. Humanity cannot advance if people are dying from natural disasters and other issues related to the environment. We also know that the environment has a direct effect on the global economy and if we are going to do anything about the extremes of wealth and poverty this must be addressed head on. ... read more

We got up in time to say good-bye to Terrye before she went to work, because we might be gone before she gets home. Nancy took a pile of projects into the house again. Rich and Nancy enjoyed the rush and the noise of everyone getting off to work and to school. Then Rich drove out to the camper place to see how they were doing on the propane repairs. Nancy worked on blogs, bank work, letters, and hemming Rich’s pants. Phil called at 11:30 and said it was his office's usual burger day at the Copper Kettle and that they would be by to walk Duke and to pick Nancy up. Rich met us at the restaurant and Phil, Neal, Boone and the two of us had a great burger lunch. They dropped Nancy back ... read more
