The accompanying photo documents our newest discovery (sorry for the typo). Informed that we were leaving for a LONG time, Iris revealed her true identity as Spider Cat ("spider cat, spider cat, does whatever a spider cat does"). Imagine our surprise. Despite this revelation we will not be taking her with us, though she might be helpful hanging our food bags in griz country. But then she would be IN griz country, which would not be good when you look like snack food. So we're finally leaving. Next stop Nashville for a couple days of doing the fam thing, then the real trip begins on Monday. Note: Susan's cell is out of service so if you want to call, use Jim's number. I'm not going to put it here obviously so if you don't have it, ... read more

Here's the plan. We have never toured the northwest nor been to Yellowstone or Yosemite--those are all first tier destinations. We will also visit many other national parks, monuments, wilderness areas, and forests along the way. This trip will complete my tour of the United States including Hawaii and Alaska and Susan will add many new states as well. The general itinerary is listed below, however, the only thing we know for sure is that it will change. That's part of the fun. We plan to leave around August 10th and return around October 30th. So don't worry--the Halloween Party is still on! August: Depart Knoxvegas Nashville, required visit to the parents Illinois, stop overnight MN, visit Aunt Dorothy South Dakota, badlands, black hills, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse monument, etc. Montana, Little Bighorn, etc. Wyoming, Yellowstone ... read more

Well, it seemed as though this day would never come, but I turned around and here it is! Today I depart for the "land of the morning calm" - Korea. I really don't know what to encounter. I have built many expectations in my mind, I have read many books & articles about the country & people, I have talked to people that have been there before, and I have definitely spent many hours planning and getting ready. I have a feeling, though, that things will probably turn out much differently than I expect. Except that is probably one of the greatest things about life - discovering and embracing the unknown. You might be asking yourself: what is Shawn doing in such a foreign land? Since I'm not in the military that can only mean one ... read more

Blogger: DJ We just gassed up in Knoxville, TN, which is funny because we thought we had passed through knoxville about 15-20 minutes earlier. Though it's possible that Knoxville is just huge. Katie would like to point out that for all of the mix CDs that we've listened to, no one saw fi to include "On the Road again" and that she was disappointed. I pointed out that the song is about anticipation of being on the road again and escaping and that my friends that made the CD's would most likely not be trying to encourage such behavior. She then conceded that she's never actually listened to that song. Katie and I are trying to switch of on the driving more frequently so we don't hate our lives as much. I drove for the first ... read more

It's official. It's 2:09 a.m. and I just purchased my non-refundable ticket to Santiago, Chile. My non-refundable return flight is from Lima, Peru, which gives me good motivation to travel once I'm through at Valparaiso where I'll be studying Spanish for six weeks. Here's some general information about where I'll be and some pre-departure research I did that you might find interesting: What is my trip? I'll be studying for six weeks at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica De Valparaiso beginning June 10th and ending July 20th. I'll study Spanish and Latin American culture and get to live with a host family who will feed me and shelter me during my stay. After this, I'll take another six weeks and travel towards Lima, Peru and see as much as I can on the way. I'll have ... read more

Map: Loops, etc. Here's a map showing our route over the course of a week and a half. It's embarassing, really, the big figure eight... Our original plan was to try and make it up to Pittsburgh, PA from Nashville, but only realized that it was nearly impossible to do this via freight train, without going through Chicago, after we'd made it to Clarksville. The easiest way, it turns out, is to go from Knoxville (not again...) east to Spencer, NC and then jump north. So here we go...... read more

Catch a train from Nashville heading NNW or WNW and get off twelve hours later in Bruceton, TN. Try to get anywhere from there and presto, the title is fulfilled. We got off the train with no idea of our locale, typical perhaps and lovely, almost certain we'd gone the wrong way but not really giving a damn since-hell-yeah-we'd gone somewhere. How wrong we were. Trying to move towards Pittsburgh, PA and ending up in The Dying Town of Bruceton, TN is a lot like not travelling at all...except worse. It's another southern spot with two closed factories and a burgeoning retired population that hunts, breeds dogs, and talks about weather so eloquently that you'd wonder how modern poets can carry those noses so high... A ride later from roofers that wanted to come with us, ... read more

So my last night in Knoxville (for 3 months) was this past Friday. We went, of course, to the Old City for one last blow out. Brady drove Dennis and I down there and others trickled in throughout the night. We ended up on the 3rd floor of Sullivans and proceeded to drink way too many V-Ray shooties and various other alcoholic concoctions. I leave tomorrow for Argentina and arrive there on Tuesday morning. I'll update this when I arrive! Wow, I just uploaded all of the photos and realized I am a huge ham. I'll try not to be in ALL of the pictures next entry. Until Tuesday!!!... read more
