Laurie had taken the wheel at about 4:30 in the morning while both Brian and I slept. Most of the night was filled with fog making it that much more difficult to stay alert. The stereo works well but was disconnected when the fuel tank was installed and hadn't been reconnected. The mountains draped in fog with the colors of fall pushing through from underneath was beautiful. At about 8am we stopped for fuel, coffee, and some gas station breakfast. Took a few pictures from the stop and watched a man skulk out of a store marked simply with three big red 'X''s and a sign that said 'adult novelties'. In my sleep clouded mind I pictured strippers dishing and serving bomb pops and ice cream sandwiches and wanted to say something but was too tired. ... read more

11 days until I leave for Costa Rica! I'm very excited! My husband's a bit bummed he can't go. Next time I hope to take him birding in Panama. I can't help but be very excited to travel. It doesn't matter where I'm going, I just like the excitement of visiting somewhere new or the adventure of getting back to where you've been before. This seems to be the best place for a travel journal, hope it goes alright. ... read more

I am so allergic to this state. Everywhere I go, I smell flowers or grass or something. I used to like that... Now I feel like I've been assaulted by nature. All I've been doing is sneezing and coughing. My flight leaves for Houston at 625 AM tomorrow. Then to San Pedro Sula, Honduras at 920 AM. I'm not really excited yet. More like nervous. I hope I don't forget anything that is necessary. And I hope I don't end up bringing a ton of stuff that isn't necessary. I just have a few more errands. I need to finish washing clothes, get a phone card, go by the bank... Visit my other brother and Star and the rest of the family. Hectic! It is going to be a long seven weeks. I miss Ben.... read more

What's a day in Raleigh without visiting Oakwood Cemetery? Oakwood is just down the road from my high school. It is a sprawling beautiful ol' cemetery. My grandaddy is there. So are lots of dead Confederate soliders. A few died in the civil war--but most of the dead soliders buried there were veterans of the war that died in the 1920's or so. Last year when I came to the cemetery for a visit, I discovered the Jewish section--I had no idea that there was one! Pretty cool! There's something about cemeteries that I just love... I like reading the inscriptioins--a tiny bit of history, a tiny bit of someone's life. Anyways, the best thing about Oakwood is Jesse Helms' gravestone. It's engraved... and just waiting for him to die! Oh Jesse... Wonder if he's gonna ... read more

Last week, when Ben was still in Raleigh with me, we were driving after dinner with my friend Lynda. We were near NC State University, so I happened to mention the cows with windows. You see, NC State has a good vet school and agricultural blah blah farming stuff. When I was a kid, we would drive down one of the back roads near the fairgrounds, by some property NC State owned, and see the cows with windows. They have this like... window in their side. I don't know why. I don't know how. All I know is that it is freakin' weird. As I remember it as a kid, they were big clear round windows, like portholes on a boat--so you could see all their insides slithering around. But, when Lynda, Ben and I drove ... read more

Kate - All I can think about right now is Italy. I'm reading about it, dreaming about it and obsessing about it. I can't believe that this is really happening. Courtney and I always planned that we would go to Europe together one day; I don't think either one of us expected that it would happen so soon. P.S. Courtney's grumpy with me because I typed everything she was planning on saying. We're acting like sisters already. Courtney - I honestly can't believe that I'm going to Europe. To Italy! I've dreamed about this all my life. I always thought that I would have to wait until college to go. I feel really lucky that I have this opportunity at such a young age. Now if I can just get everything packed. . .... read more

No, I'm not gone yet. I'm packed and almost ready to go, but I'm starting to get nervous. One big problem is I don't have semester-long housing quite squared away yet, and won't until a few days after I arrive in Ireland. The plan is to stay at a Bed and Breakfast (called Cregan's-- sounds cozy, right?) for a few nights until I can check out some houses and apartments around Univ. of Limerick and find a suitable one. Being the (generally) organized person I am (not counting my room), this last-minute stuff is sometimes hard to swallow. But, the UL international student guide says to find housing in this way, so I just pray it all works out when I get over there. I fly out of RDU on Sunday afternoon, hit the airport in ... read more

Well, I just created this blog because I'm getting set and ready to head to Limerick, Ireland for a semester. Generally, I hate blogs because I think journalling is a means for inner peace and understanding oneself, for getting feelings and ideas out that you can't express to others, or to record important things that will delight oneself and jog one's memory years down the line. However, at the request of several friends, I'm beginning a TravelBlog specifically for keeping in touch and keeping them updated while I'm away. Hopefully, it will help. Packing continues, and I continue to grow both excited and nervous before my departure. I suppose when I write next, I will be in Ireland! Wish me luck!... read more
