On June 18, ten of our ambassadors and eight of their parents caravaned to Raleigh for a voluntary field trip. That morning we visited the NC Museum of Natural Science. In groups and individually students viewed skeletons of dinosaurs and whales, walked through a butterfly atrium, and peered through foliage looking for the creatures that lived in the displays. We had a box lunch delivered to us in front of the museum and for dessert...chocolate covered meal worms and crickets of course. Yes, they were real bugs. This is an adventurous group! Destiny Askew, one of our student ambassadors, and her mom organized the highlight of our trip through her contact with Senator Ed Jones to visit the General Assembly. That afternoon we crossed the road to the url=http://www.ncga.state... read more

Not Quite Ready So I decided to officially start packing today, and I realized how unprepared I am. Still have yellow fever vaccinations and malaria pills I need to get, no travelers checks yet, and the list goes on. I think Grant and I have decided we're going to Greyhound it up to DC to catch our flight though, and since the bus leaves at 10:30 at night, no lodging costs - sweet. However I did just get some fly overpriced gear from REI, including these ex officio boxers that supposedly last weeks before you need to wash them. This is especially convenient for me because with clothes, as with my body, I would prefer to wash as infrequently as possible. On a side note, I'm very interested to post some pictures up here so ... read more

Ok, so here's my first travel blog entry, I'm excited to keep everyone updated on my happenins'. Andy and I leave for Peru on the 13th, out of DC. It's still up in the air as to how exactly we're going to get to DC from Raleigh, as it turns out our two main prospects got internships and have to work. at their fancy new jobs. Rideshare on Craigslist has turned out to be a disapointment, apparently not many people are looking to give two college students a ride to DC from Raleigh. It's beginning to look like we are going to have to shell out 50 bucks to ride Greyhound up to DC. From there We are going to have to wait about a day, so we can fly out on the 13th to Lima, ... read more

Greetings from North Carolina. So far I've seen two freeways, one highway, a parkway, two Hampton Inns, and the airport. My travels are the stuff of legends I tell ya. The trip to the hotel reminded me of driving through Charleston. The freeways are surrounded by green and very few buildings are visible from there. Everything is so spacious and far apart. I expected gas to be cheaper around here though. I know it's the 2nd most populated city in North Carolina, but I still imagine there being a lot less cars here than in California. And gas is only cheaper by about $.20/gal. Washington, DC was pretty cool. My feet were aching by the end of each day, but I got some great pictures and I saw most of the things you're told to see ... read more

Today was the first time in two months I didn’t even set my alarm. I had no where to be or anything to do until 1:00. So nice! I got up when Sarah came in to get something. This morning was the first time I noticed there’s a window in our bathroom- when I went to pee and saw construction workers. Yikes! Sarah and Kyle were making lunch by this point. I tried to be helpful, but it took several hours for my brain to boot up. Prossy came in, and I was just standing, not really even focusing my eyes, and she sent me to bed… then gave Kyle strict orders to bring me lunch in bed! I went and sat on my bed, but was doing work. Kyle didn’t bring me lunch, but when ... read more

Today was really, really early. Kyle and I hit the road with the truck to the theater. It’s an hour into town and we had a 6:30 load in. But boy it was good to get back and do a real show. There was some miscommunication between the TD and everyone else. The guy who was basically the master electrician didn’t get a lot of the changes. It was rough. Plus, they put a lot of pressure on us for this show, a big sponsored one that was suposed to make tons of money for our school we’re building in Uganda. Good thing they put the show of the century at the end of a two and a half week break. All the big wigs from the office were there, I guess. Not that I’ve met ... read more

Today was long. Kyle, Craig, Rachel and I went into town at way too early, where we dropped them off and Kyle and I went to get Ryan at the airport. Anne was supposed to come in soon, but it was almost 2 hours, so we hung out and bought toys for the kids. Ryan got them a remote control snake and tarantula. Very fun. The three of us got lots of work done, sort of, while everyone else was in rehearsal. Most importantly, I got Leopard installed on my computer! Yea! Now I’m as cool as the other kids. Ryan adds a new dynamic to everything. It’s like the crew, even just the 5 of us, are white frosting. Then someone new comes in for a few days, Ryan, Craig, Julia, whoever, and they are ... read more

Come to think of it, I don’t think I really remember this morning. I’m pretty sure we were in Kentucky though. Long drive. Kyle rode in the van with us, which was really the first time for a long trip, so that was new. For about 10 minutes, I was hyper and bouncing off the walls, then it got really quiet. Oh yeah, good nap. Kyle wasn’t sure what happened, but Beth and Sarah quickly explained. I woke of for a while, to eat. Oh yes, by the way, it’s Saint Patrick’s Day. He’s the patron saint of Ireland, whatever that means. I asked Kyle why we celebrate and he said, “Any excuse to party.” Does America have a patron saint? Anyway, Kyle brought with him on his iPod Ireland’s Call, which is a bunch of ... read more
