A bad night followed by an early start. The day started with a guided tour of the city. Our guide was very informed and a New York dweller, so knew the city very well. We toured sights such as the Rockerfeller Centre, Empire State building, St. Patricks Cathedral, Flat Iron building, Greenwich Village, and perhaps the most moving stop - Ground Zero. The amount of re-building is amazing and very noisy. The plans for the area and its redevelopment are clear and sensitive to the events. Truly moving. We then took the free bus from Pier 42 to Central Park. The park is a huge green oasis in the frantic city. Beautiful trees that give wonderful shade. Much needed shade in the heat of the city. New York has changed since our last visit. New Yorkers ... read more

Weather: 90 degrees, no rain, sunny. What’s Hot: Skylon Tower, Canadian side; Maid of the Mist boat ride. What’s Not: Condition of the American side. Travel Lesson of the Day: Park in the shade, carry plenty of quarters. From Kathy: Growing up in the Pittsburgh, PA, area, I always heard other kids talking about their trips to Niagara Falls. Most kids would return with three comments. “The American side is ugly.” “The Canadian side is beautiful.” “The falls are wearing down so fast, if you didn’t go soon you might not see them.” “Everyone is getting to see Niagara Falls except me,” I thought. So, are the Falls disappearing? Well—yes, in geologic time, not grade school time. If you haven’t been there yet, you still have a chance. And is the American side still less pretty ... read more

What’s Hot: Breaking Free! What’s Not: All the work it takes to get on the road. The road: Weather clear, high of 89 degrees. Traffic: medium-heavy. Wait! Wait! I forgot the … We planned to leave CT by 8 a.m. but it was 12:15 when our friends Francoise and Wolfe pushed us into our rented family roadster for the last time. Everyone (except the driver, Paul) fell asleep by the time we got to the highway entrance, 1.5 miles away. We were already exhausted from the stress that sneaked up on us as we tried to pack for a trip that we expected to be between five and six weeks—including a cruise. We must have collectively walked 10 miles, entering and leaving the house with one more thing that we might just need. We left a ... read more

Our family decided that our annual summer road trip had to be temporarily shelved due to rising gas prices, but that doesn't mean our love of budget travel had to be shelved as well. I bought a guide book to Western New York at the local bookstore and decided that instead of going away on vacation, we were going to take a summer staycation. This summer I will attempt to bring my family to local attractions we've never experienced before and act like tourists in our own area. Today's outing was to Niagara Falls, NY, about 20 minutes from my hometown. The American Falls sometimes gets a bum rap. This is due to the depressing downtown area of the city of Niagara Falls which is in remarkably shabby condition for housing such a major tourist attraction. ... read more

The next couple of days were just spent driving further east. We stopped off in Cleveland which looked like a really nice place, didnt have time to stop and have a look around unfortunatly as we spent ages trying to find a motel- there was some kind of Gay rights festival on so most of the motels were full, d'oh. Finally the followng day at about 4 o'clock we arrived in Niagara. We found a nice cheap motel and the lady there told us that night there would be fireworks down by the falls, they're set off on the Canadian side but apparently you get a good view of them from the american side too. So that was our evening organised, we had a few hours to kill first so just chilled out watching tv ... read more

www.maidofthemist.com Driving towards Niagara Falls was one of the most thrilling times of the trip. On the ride over from Pennsylvania it was my turn to ride in the front seat of the bus with Benji. It had been a very long six hour drive third day in the excited talk from the first two had died down and things had long turned stale riding in the bus. Driving on the New York State Thruway we passed over the Niagara River it was me who spotted the mist of the Falls in the distance creating a small rainbow in its wake. The river itself was very turbulent, cascading towards its ultimate destination made me think of the film River Wild, although I think anyone caught white water rafting this river will find themselves desperately trying ... read more

Today we woke up under a snow shower. When the kids saw the snow fall through the window, they inmediately got ready for the action. After a light breakfast, we all went outside to play with the snow. The kids were throwing snow balls at each other and having lots of fun. The fun lasted for an hour before we headed back. We did several stops to take pictures of the Niagara Falls. The falls divide the Canada province of Ontario from New york state in the US. They are part of the river Niagara which connects to the Great Lakes. The falls are divided in three sections: the American Falls and the smaller Bridal Veil Falls both in the US section and the Horseshoe fall in the Canadian Section. The Falls are an important source ... read more

We left New York city toward Niagara Falls on a trip that will last at least eight hours. The bus we are travelling is confortable equipped with a DVDsystem. On our way to Niagara Falls we watched She is the man and John Q. Before leaving New York it is worth saying some facts we learned about the city. New York city population is 12 million of which only 3 million leaves in the city. The rest of the population, 9 milllion comes there to work or to visit the city. The city is served by about 85,ooo cabs. But they are not enough to serve the need. Three airports serve the area, namely, La Guardia, JF Kennedy and Newark. As we leave what is know as the capital of the world, we reflect on the ... read more

Tuesday 30th October Train to Buffalo. Arrived just after 10.30am. Another 6 hour wait at the station waiting for the connecting train. Train to Niagara Falls at 4.30pm and arrived at 6pm. Wednesday 31st October Another sleeping day after a grueling train schedule from previous days. Thursday 1st November Visited a discount retail outlet. Bought some gloves, new beard trimmer, and a worldwide plug adaptor. Friday 2nd November Visited the falls today. Caught the bus there. Hardly anyone uses public transport here, and the buses don't come very often. Walked round the New York State Park which surrounds the falls. Out of tourist season so not too many people about. Saw a black squirrel for the first time. The squirrels here aren't afraid of people and come right up to you hoping for food. Walked round ... read more
