Since we had already decided that it was too cold to be whitewater rafting yet, we had decided to skip the stop in Ohiopyle, PA (even though the rafting looked awesome!). But we didn't want to miss the stop in Pittsburgh to see the Andy Warhol Museum that was on the way to Ohiopyle. This meant that today would probably be a long day on the bike. The Garmin lady said it was a 3 hour ride to Pittsburgh on the back roads, or a 1.75 hour ride on the Interstate. Also iit would be a 6 hour ride from Pittsburgh to Niagara Falls on the back roads and a 4 hour ride on the interstate. We normally always take the back roads, but since we knew it was going to be a 300+ mile day, ... read more

Geo: 43.083, -79.0577Today we drove the 90min to Niagara Falls. The Niagara River drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, and like all the Great Lakes (except Lake Michigan) it includes the border between Canada and USA. Shipping uses Ontario's Welland Canal which is to the west of the Niagara River. The 43km canal has eight locks which cater for the 100m height difference.Apart from the falls, tourists can also visit over 80 vineyards on the pretty southern shores of Lake Ontario.... read more

Geo: 43.0955, -79.0559Headed off on a long walk to the Whirlpool. It's raining, but we decide to soldier on as we heard it wasn't too be missed. After an extremely long walk, one look (and admittedly we didn't walk to the bottom, just the lookout platform) and we were suddenly very weary. Really wasn't much to look at. Decided to pay the extravagant cost of $27 to take us back to town. Onto more exciting things. Tickets for the Mistrider Zipline. Awesome, Kirsten used to GoPro to record it but Ella was left behind a little and she wasn't happy. Then onto Maid of the Mist (the Canadian one is now called the Hornblower). The sheer force is such a spectacle to behold.Another walk along the 'falls strip' and then decide to let the girls do ... read more

Oh, Lucky Day! You all get to share in my birthday present from sweet Cory. Back on May 5th (my birthday), Cory bought tickets for the Boy George Concert being held on September 3rd at the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls (NY). And, of course, you are included. I've always loved Boy George and his songs from back in the 1980's. I would cross-country ski the old railroad trail from Shongo to Wellsville (@10 miles)on this WAG trail. Our dear dog, Dino, was my companion on those challenging hikes. Oh, to be young, again....and thin! ....and to still have Dino with us. While sailing over the white, slick snow....I would listen to Boy George's tape on my walkman headphones. By the time I reached my destination (my mother's house) I would have listened to each ... read more

Geo: 43.0955, -79.0559Glenn and I woke up earlier today, as it was 6:00am, and I had wanted to get up by 6:30am. After going to the bathroom, I told Glenn "I am not going to get back in THAT bed to need to get out again in 30 min!" So we walked down to the community showers/bath. All was quiet and nice and cool on Sunday morning. We had pancakes out on the deck. Delicious. We packed up and followed Brenda and Keith to church. Sunday morning, we attended church The Chapel in Sandusky with Keith and Brenda. The preacher was spot on. Very good. After the service we said good-bye and headed towards Niagara Falls/Canada. As we were heading down the interstate 90, I texted Rosa Brown to see if she wanted to meet us for ... read more

Day 26 - Grand Island to ??? "The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men gang aft agley." We were up and moving well this morning until Anne smelled something unfamiliar. It turned out the trailer battery was not doing too well. Truth be told, it was literally smoking, so Tony quickly detached it while giving Michelle a quick lesson in battery chemistry. A battery check and change is a standard problem and shouldn't take long. There was an Advanced Auto Parts down the road from the KOA and they were able to check the trailer and car batteries right away. They all needed to be replaced. Everyone there was super helpful and professional. Unfortunately as they were changing the car battery a small coolant hose on the radiator was broken. Two model years earlier it ... read more

Day 25 - Niagara Falls It's a good thing we planned to arrive at the the falls first thing in the morning. We found parking without any difficulty and headed to our first activity. The Maid of the Mist is a boat that takes people right up to the middle of the Horseshoe Falls. We didn't have to wait too long in line to get tickets or to board the boat and we were able to get spots right at the top rail in the back of the boat. The views as we passed by American and Bridal Falls were spectacular but the power of being right in the middle of Horseshoe Falls was overwhelming. Our ticket price included ankle length ponchos. On the way over Anne wondered if we really needed a poncho that long. ... read more

On our way to Niagara Falls we stopped outside of Bath in the Finger Lakes area. We then stayed at a KOA park North of Niagara, an easy drive to the falls and also to Lockport where we took a cruise on the Erie Canal. The cruise was okay, but probably not worth the cost. Niagara Falls was exceptional especially the Maid of the Mist boat tour. It was amazing to view the falls that close up and experience how huge they really are and I did get wet. The poncho they give you kept my clothes dry, but my face and some of my hair got wet and was well worth it. From Niagara we went further North to the 1000 Islands area. We stayed at another KOA park which was on Association Island in ... read more

Hi All, Just had an amazing couple of days at Niagara Falls. Weather was bright and sunny but cold, -1. We had a long drive there, 7 hours in all, but a nice drive. Partly through the green mountain national forest and then on to the Interstate. At one point we stopped at Hogback Mountain for the wonderful 100 mile view and stepped out onto snow. Dave completely unprepared and in shorts! We went over to the Canadian side of the Falls as we had heard the views were better from there and they were! For those of you who have not been there we have to say it is a very unusual place. On the one hand you have the natural phenomena of the Falls and the Niagara River in all its glory. On the ... read more

Tranz Canada done and dusted. The rest of the ride from Wawa down to Niagara Falls was quite uneventful as most of it was on freeways. The GPS took us on a bit of a tiki tour off the freeway at one stage through some lakes and rural roads that gave us a break from the boredom of the freeway. We skirted around the throbbing city of Toronto to arrive at our hotel in Niagara Falls and our reunion with String. TT and Miss Muppet also made it into town that day and we all got together in their room for our first glimpse of the thundering Niagara Falls and a fabulous dinner with views of the falls. The following day, we were full on tourists, we walked under the falls, we looked from above and ... read more
