Our last day in New York... We started by getting up early, yes out the door by 5am to see what exactly happens at 5am on a Tuesday morning... The streets were quiet, only a few joggers out and of course the cleaners- cleaning the Ruby Red Stairs on top of the TKTS Booth...exactly where we were aiming to get a few photos done! Seems like they take for ever to clean those stairs so we walked to the nearest Starbucks and got ourselves some Coffee and found other things to take photos of.. Brooklyn Bethel We took a cab to Brooklyn Bethel and it only cost about $18 from Times Square, not bad considering there were 4 of us sharing the cost! It was so exciting seeing the "Watchtower" building as we drove over Brooklyn ... read more

New York is a city known for its food - from roaming street trucks to elusive high-end restaurant reservations, traditional dishes flitting around this hub of immigration past and present and serving as the media backdrop in the lastest of culinary and gastronomic innovation. It seems almost sacrilegious that I've yet to write anything up about all the noshing one can do both in Manhattan and the outer burroughs, particularly in light of the fact that the reason we relocated to New York initially so that I could matriculate into a graduate program that took food scholarship seriously. I seem to always leave people imagining that I head off to the ivory tower each morning to mix and mingle with famous chefs, to dine on foie gras and shiso leaves while debating the merits of this ... read more

Mexico, Texas, New York and Montreal “No news is good news,” Laura’s mom used to say to the parents of exchange students who had not communicated in a while. As we take the train through the European countryside we reflect on the two months that have passed since we have written and realize that in our case the expression holds true. Since we last wrote, our life continues to be full of adventure, celebration, family and friends; often with little time to spare. Many of you are probably wondering why and how we came to Europe after three months in Southeast Asia, and we are going to tell you. Others probably are wondering if this is still part of the honeymoon, and while we aren’t really sure, we are calling it “Laura and Aaron’s Great ... read more

I picked up the wooden cat mask and held it up to my face. Brittany in turn raised its dog counter part and we stood solemn facing each other, masked, until we both broke out in laughter. It is like Breakfast at Tiffany's. she remarked. Actually, being in New York City was like Breakfast at Tiffany's, and The Cruise, and Annie Hall, and the many indie films that showcased the creativity and quirkiness of all that makes up this city which was my only reference about the area previously. Everyone I knew was either in Brooklyn or in the process of trying to move there. I had gone to visit the artists who had formerly been my school mates and collaborators, my security net, who all migrated to New York, an environment to exercise their fresh ... read more

So my friend asked for some tips on where I went in New York and this is what I came up with... Here's a quick tip if you have an iPhone! Bookmark/Save any place you want to go to in "Maps" When you get free WiFi you can do a route plan with Metro times. New York is one of the cities that you can use Metro times on google maps. Pretty helpful! We used www.airbnb.com for our accommodation. You can rent apartments/rooms/B&B's etc. Pretty cheap and way more fun than a hotel, Genius! We rented a place from this guy, John Vandersall http://www.airbnb.com/users/show/22870 Highly recommend him! These are my favourite places I went to...

My bags are finally checked in, after a long discussion whether I should pay for an extra checked bag again. I claimed I'd already payed for it all the way to Stockholm when I checked in at Portland Airport. The lady behind the desk looked at me like I was crazy and reminded me that this was JFK, therefore I had to pay again. I pointed her towards my receipt and my flight ticket, telling her that it is ONE ticket, but instead of a regular transfer I decided to do a stop over. Desk lady flips her nails and says on her Brooklyn accent "I've nevah heard of that, giirrrrrrl!" So, apparently Delta took over the ticket (from my Swedish travel agency) once my original flight was cancelled. and their system displayed two separate flights; ... read more

Prices in New York are unfathomable. I've picked up a hot dog from a street vendor for $2, a prepacked sandwich from a drugstore for $6 and paid $15 for a chicken dippers starter (though it was large). I've paid anything between $3 and $8 for a pint and between $5 and $11 for a cocktail. I even paid $25 for a double jack daniels on ice! And all of this within the same area. I can buy 2 bananas or 2 slices of marble cake for a dollar yet a comic book costs $5.99. An internet cable set me back $30! I have absolutely no sense of what a dollar is worth. There are very few old people in New York. Even when I went away from Manhattan and into the 'burbs of Brooklyn I ... read more
