Day 2 of our trip started with a tour of Brooklyn Bethel - the (for now) World HQ for Jehovah's Earthly Organization. The brother who was nice enough to take time from his day off to give us a tour was very nice. He showed us his department (house services) as well as around the branch offices. We got to see the different departments involved in, not only the teaching materials used by the Governing Body, but also the use and distribution of the voluntary donations they receive from around the world. After the tour of the offices we got to see 2 different self-guided tours: the history of the Bible and the history of God's people through the last 2 millennia. It was so inspiring to see the way God's Holy Spirit has worked to ... read more

So it’s goodbye to Staten Island. We say au revoir to Joan as we will see her again before we leave NYC, then after a Skype with R&J in Brighton, UK, we set off to Brooklyn and to meet Kaz, the owner of the Isabella (our B & B). He's a lovely chap, Polish but grew up in Tanzania (they have lots of African art in the house). His wife Joanna is a CE of a local Housing Homeless Charity and they import and sell African/Tanzanian sculptures & artifacts to raise money for the Charity to support their work. The house is a really big place in the Ditmas Park area of Brooklyn with beautiful wooden floors, big rooms, and tastefully furnished. They have a kitchen we can access for drinks etc and our two rooms ... read more

Gateway National Recreation Area This maybe one of the most strangest places we have camped at. It is the only National Park, within a city, in the country. it is the only campground in New York City. It was the first airport in New York City, now you need to Google Floyd Bennett Airport. We camped on one of the runways, they had no hook-ups, but our RV is self sufficient. This morning we biked to Coney Island...the bike trail runs next to the parkway then out to the ocean. It was about 8 miles each way. Bob enjoyed a hot dog at Nathan's and Kel had a yummy lobster roll. When we returned, we had a history tour of the first Airport in NY ...Bennett Field, with the Ranger. It was excellent.... read more

We walked the Brooklyn Bridge, in the PM, it was a bit of a mistake to do it on a beautful Sunday afternoon, but it was worth it. One lane is for bikes and the other is for about a million people walking...all with a purpose and with banners. We rewarded ourself by going to the best pizza place in Brooklyn. But every pizza parlor is number one?? This day we walked about 8 miles!!... read more

I got downstairs a bit before my 8 am pickup, which was a good thing, the driver was already there. One other couple from my tour was also on the bus, and then we stopped off at another hotel for a pick up. Quick check in at Alaska air kiosk and not too bad a line for the bag drop. A bit of a long line at TSA check, and apparently people up here haven't gotten the liquids memo, one of the agents had to keep reminding people that things weren't allowed. Wandered around the terminal a bit and ran into another couple from my tour (they had a slightly later flight). Flight down was good, absolutely gorgeous views of the mountains as we took off. Last 45 minutes of the flight was way bumpy. It ... read more

Brooklyn, the most populous borough of NYC was originally a Dutch village called Breuckelen. In 1776 - six years after James Cook first sighted the coastline of NSW - the Battle of Brooklyn was the first battle fought following the Declaration of Independence as part of the American Revolutionary War. Moving right along, in 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge linked Long Island to Manhattan and Brooklyn remained an independent city until it became part of NYC in 1898. We walked around Brooklyn on Friday morning to get a feel of the place which included a visit to BAM; the Brooklyn Academy of Music; dark at he moment apart from the cinemas. But it was nice to see the place. After a little bit of experience with the US banking system (gained from more than one bank) I ... read more

We've finally made it to Brooklyn and are now settled into our new home for the next three days; a gorgeous brownstone in Brooklyn Heights where we have our own lounge room (with a bookshelf full of very interesting books), bedroom and ensuite. I'm feeling super duper relaxed after eating a gorgeous meal - washed down by a rather delightful cocktail - in the River Deli just down the road; fish for me and lobster for Kev. And it's all very quiet here too; a pleasant change from the noise of Manhattan. But how did we get to this point? Well before we could leave our apartment there was the washing, drying, packing etc etc which, while somewhat of a chore, is a necessity when you're moving home. After re-stocking the fridge, we said our goodbyes ... read more

5pointz (according to Wikipedia) "is an outdoor art exhibit space in Long Island City, New York, considered to be the world's premiere "graffiti Mecca," where aerosol artists from around the globe paint colourful pieces on the walls of a 200,000-square-foot (19,000 m2) factory building. (....) It was announced in March 2011 that Wolkoff (the owner) plans to redevelop the property to build high-rise residential towers, putting the future of 5 Pointz in jeopardy." Well, apparently they will be putting it down in September. So here are some pix for you to get a feel. It's a pretty cool place. I'm glad I got to go there before leaving. 5 Pointz (selon Wikipedia) est considérée comme la "la Mecque du graffiti", où les artistes de toutes origines réalisent des œuvres colorées sur les murs d'un bâtiment d'une ... read more

Geo: 40.7619, -73.9763 Last night I went back to that hidden cocktail place. It is in the middle of a very quiet area in Queens and the entrance is just a metallic 'heavy-looking' brown door with no name. Once inside, the best spot to seat is at the bar where you can watch the bartenders making cocktails. I found that captivating...a bit of this a bit of that shake shake shake and voilà! The plus is that you can ask what you want and if you don't know just say something like 'I would like a fresh cocktail, no spice, no whiskey'. For the second one I asked for one that would look 'cool' and I got the raspberry one. Both cocktails were very tasty but the ultimate star is the ice. Why? Because it is ... read more
