First thoughts of NY - the city hasn't changed, it's exactly the same we left it 6 years ago: the smells, taste of Manhattan hot-dogs, sticky humid. A lot of walking, strolling and shopping (of course).... read more

On my first night in New York City there was a snowstorm. As I got out of the taxi it fell around me in chunks of shiny white and settled like a wintery blanket over the cars and roofs. Out the window of my friends’ apartment in Brooklyn, I looked on the city outside and felt like I was in a movie. My first few days were slow and easy and it felt pretty similar to home. We spent most of our time in Brooklyn, wandering through vintage shops, eating lots and drinking interesting beers at quirky little bars. Beth had met me at the airport and it was amazingly easy for us to slip back into our friendship. The girls we were staying with, Emma and Claire, I met in South America. We learned our lesson after Friday's disastrous drive through Manhattan from LaGuardia. To catch our flight, we took the slightly longer route and drove through Staten Island and into Brooklyn. We gave ourselves extra time and left our hotel six hours before our departure time--just in case. The drive went much smoother with very little traffic. When we were just a few miles from LaGuardia Airport, we still had hours before takeoff, so we decided to stop for pizza. I'd heard Grimaldi's in Brooklyn (not far off from the highway) is a good place to try, so we decided to give it a whirl. It was lunch time, and there was a line of people standing outside Grimaldi's, waiting for seats to open up. While we really wanted to try some good New York pizza, we ... read more

I went out early this morning to get some tickets for tomorrow’s tour and to go to the Apple store to take advantage of the fact that their prices are lower here than in the UK. I got the subway to Time Square just to find that the meeting place for the tour at the top-end of Time Square was actually closer to where I had started. Coming back from Grand Central Station required a change of train, but it went a bit wrong as I hadn’t taken a subway map with me. There is a complete lack of maps in the stations and it is all well too complicated to try and remember. Lesson four on travelling on the New York subway is to take a map with you. Our first activity of the day ... read more

Boy oh boy it's hot. About 37 but feels 47 with the overwhelming NYC humidity. Day 7 We knew this was coming so spent monday doing out door things - we walked around Brooklyn Heights, had lunch at a GREAT Diner, ribs and buffalo wings servedwith biscuts! We noted that a "slice" in this part of town - that is a huge slice of plain cheese pizza costs 99c, but an apple costs more than a dollar. We then walked over the Brooklyn bridge in to town. Though it was 24 degrees it felt like 34, and the heat of the day here peaks at about 6pm and remains hot over night. Brooklyn Heights was much more like Harlem than I thought it would be. By the time we got back from the city we were all ... read more

Day 4 we are still waking up early, so breakfast with playtime then we headed out. We headed to Times Square and I lined up to try and get matinee tickets for the new hit musical Spiderman turn off that dark on broadway. While I did this i ended up on a billboard in Times Square - a niffty vodka ad puts the crowd in the ad. So the queue went quickly so I'd gotten our tickets by 10.05am. The kids and Greg returned later from window shopping with very exciting news, They were standing outside the Disney store in Times Square when they approached Kasey and asked her to open the store for them, she got to use the HUGE Disney key and opened the store - very exciting. They also gave her a replica ... read more

Can you believe it - Cooper and Greg are watching the State of origin. It's just after 8am and we all have been up since 5.30am. Yesterday was another long day -up at 6.00am at the airport by 8am (after the 2 hour trip into Paris I wasn't risking it). Flight on time but still nearly missed our connection to Newark in Frankfurt due to delays on the tarmac, kids excited it was a jumbo jet and asking why we couldn't sit upstairs - I explained they could that if they wanted to when they were older. Seats VERY uncomfortable but personal tv's made the time go quick. Watched "episodes" - highly recommend it even though it stars Matt Le Blanc - is english comedy at it's darkest. Not looking forward to the last leg of ... read more

Empire state of mind Lauantai päätettiin alottaa lauttareissulla Staten Islandille. Paljon työtunteja on nähty sen e... read more
