What a nice relief today was from the concrete jungle. Took the subway to Brooklyn and Coney Island. It's a seaside town complete with boardwalk, ice cream stands, vomit-inducing funfair rides and Shoot the Freak. I must admit to being a bit disappointed by Shoot the Freak. Basically there's a guy with a masked helmet and a shield and he dodges about in a pit while kids shoot him with paintball guns. When the kids had finished he took off his helmet and I was expecting to see Quasimodo, or at least someone whose thumbs were on backwards. Instead I saw a normal looking American teenager, probably working his way through college. Most disappointing. I went to the Aquarium but the queues were massive so turned about and walked along the pier, which was full of ... read more

Blogging is so weak. I have been thinking about this more and more with each passing day, which has in turn delayed the posting of photos. Writing has never been my strong point and I fail to see how starting now will be a good idea, and on such a medium as the internet(soon to be regulated and thus dead). So. NYC. What did I notice first through my dazed and bleary gaze? Trash, Rubbish, Filth, Garbage, Waste, Discards, etc. Stacked in stagnant heaps outside nearly every dwelling. Resources everywhere, seen as Trash, looked upon as nothing more than the stage between the refuse bin and the landfill. I mentioned the swirling trash gyre twice the size of texas a few times in passing conversation and many people haven't even heard of it. I see people, ... read more

Finally I am on my way to Argentina. Currently on AM403 to Mexico City. Preparation (for a big trip without a plan) has been intense.  I have packed my apartment and put most of the contents in storage, received vaccinations for all types of tropical maladies and packed a versatile but small amount of gear and clothing for a trip that has no itinerary.  At 38 years old I find myself free of the typical obligations that come with this age (life partner, child or children, mortgage, job). I can't imagine a better opportunity will arise for me to travel broadly, and to explore. The process of preparation was surprisingly stressful. I created a deadline for myself by booking a flight just a few days after vacating the apartment. How do you pack for a trip ... read more

It's the little things that continue to suprise me wherever I go around NYC. Be it the dinner I order that comes delivered on bicycle, or the other dinner in union square where I'm left with "get home safe" wishes from the staff at the restaurant... The two dollars I find on the ground while taking Olive for a walk, or the then complete stranger that talks about art and directs me to other things and artists I might not otherwise know about. Then, in the midst of the time spent shopping and site seeing - - there it is, the great deal! I ventured into midtown to go to Macy's - low and behold, I left saving more than I spent. No matter what, this city has chosen to smile back at me and continues ... read more

**Disclaimer: This whole trip of blog entries are all being written post-trip, and this entry specifically is being written one year TO THE DAY that we landed in Buenos Aires and started upon the trip to end all trips. ** Matt has been dreaming about going on this trip for as long as I've known him, and Im sure if you asked him, he wouldnt be able to tell you about a time when doing something like this wasnt on his list. I am one of those people who has itchy feet and can't sit still. Im always looking forward to my next trip, fantasizing about all the places i *have* to go, and imagining living in places I've never been. I grew up traveling with my family and it stuck on me. Together we are ... read more

There's a lovely walkway in New York called the Highline. It currently runs from around W 10th Street up to W 20th Street (eventually it will run up to 34th Street). The Highline is an old freight train line that used to run into the warehouses of the Meat Packing District. Well, when the meat markets closed up, the line was deserted. Eventually, someone got a brilliant idea to turn into a park. The idea for my birthday was for my sister and I to walk the Highline Park, then head crosstown to meet my nephew, my niece and her boyfriend for dinner. Well, I goofed. I decided that we should start downtown and work our way along the Hudson to the Highline. I figured we'd walk a few blocks near the Hudson then turn up ... read more

He was smart and funny... but this has never been depicted in any book or movie. He loved all animals, never carried or used a credit card, always ordered the same lunch for all of his guests and always asked if there were any good invitations in the mail, yet it hadn't arrived yet to find out. Who am I talking about? ....Andy Warhol. Who else? Today, I went to the Brooklyn Museum to see the Andy Warhol in the Last Decade show, and today Brigid Berlin and Vincent Fremont were talking and sharing memories about Andy. Brigid was one of the first Factory girls, and is the last one still alive; she is almost 71. She worked at all four of Andy's factories throughout Manhattan. She and Andy became the best of friends, yet she ... read more

There are 3 downtown bridges crossing the East River from Brooklyn to Manhattan. The Brooklyn Bridge is the iconic one, and the Manhattan Bridge is the one that has 4 different train lines running over it, but for some reason, the Williamsburg has always been the unloved stepchild in my mind. I have no reason to go to Williamsburg, and the Brooklyn end of the bridge is not easy to get to from where I live. But, we decided that since we'd walked over the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, it was only fair to walk across the Williamsburg. Since the area at the Brooklyn end of the Bridge held little interest, we decided to start in Brooklyn and cross over into Manhattan. So, step one, getting to the Brooklyn end by subway. Due to the interesting ... read more

Temperatures are still hot - but it's summer and expected. I think the news people don't go into the subways at all, otherwise they'd talk about it a bit more realistically. If it's hot "upstairs" it's hotter down in the subway, with the only breezes coming from the express trains that pass by as you wait for the local train. It's become a welcomed breeze actually - even if its warm, it's still air moving. If the trains don't pass by, the only thing that's moving is the sweat dripping down your forehead. But, its NY - I love it. I don't love the heat rash that is still hanging around, but it gets better day by day. Over the weekend, I took a trip on the Long Island Railroad to meet up with Jeannie and ... read more
