Back home in Brooklyn, NY, sitting at my kitchen table with a turkey in the oven, I can't help but feel more thankful than ever. Yes, it's three days after thanksgiving,...but what good does it do to show gratitude and thanx for everything we have, only one day a year? Even as I sort through my mail and the stacks of bills, wondering if can scrounge up enough $ to pay rent on the 1st, I feel blessed. Warm and cozy with the smell of turkey in the air, my wonderful friends due to arrive shortly, bringing more food to share, life is a gift. The children in Africa, arriving at the Rift Valley Children's Village that very first day...wondering what's happening to them, what is this strange place with all the wazungu (white people), and ... read more

Well, today was fun.... I had booked identical flights to/from Miami, down to the same seat numbers. Flight today was supposed to leave Miami at 10:56, but at around 10:15 I noticed that the plane still hadn't arrived in Miami. Well, it was finally announced that the plane was delayed due to President Obama's presence in Miami and was circling. A bit later, they announced that the plane had been diverted to West Palm Beach. It eventually showed up, and we took off a bit after noon. Flight was a bit bumpy, but not terrible. However, at the end of the flight, we got stuck in a holding pattern south of Trenton for 1/2 hour. Circling is the worst time for me, since you can't use any electronic devices. But eventually we landed, and after waiting ... read more

This is turning out to be a very nice trip so far, and as always when I settle down a little, I wonder whether I really do want to set out just yet. Even when I do decide i want to, I get nervous before I depart anyway, so thats the expectation Im starting to feel over the horizon. Beginning to cram all the things I feel I have to see and do before I have to leave, gone were the days of wandering through the streets and carelessly letting everything happen to me. Well, its not all that bad...Im just making sure I go to some museums and galleries and get a niggle for going to all the corners of the city to take it all in. Now that has shown itself to be ... read more

Meet Legs Malone - The Girl with the 34 and a Half Inch Inseam (and the perfect antidote to a vacant birthday). Dave's turning 31 a week from today, and in true Penny style I'll be missing his big day. (Some of you may remember the "Ill-Fated Year That Dave's Girlfriend Forgot" ... I still blame it on Peruvian altitude, time zone confusion and an anti-malarial brain freeze). This year poor Dave is dealing with pre-meditated neglect. I'll be taking a road-trip to Montreal with Danielle, Cam, Jack and Sam. Yeeeehhaaaarrr!!! (The benefits of unemployment are kicking in). So to make up for a bout of bad timing, we treated Dave last night to a bite of Legs Malone and her famous burlesque show. Woah, talk about raunchy! Between dancing and stripping, comedy and a bucketload ... read more

It's been a nice first 10 day or so. I cold see myself getting a habit. First impressions first I guess. Crazy. Thankfully my fears of the border guards was not fulfilled. Though they were not the friendliest by any means. And I guess I was pretty drunk from the plane... good old British Airways. Great company too, as me and the guy next to me had a great time chatting and exchanging ideas. He was an architect and a pleasure to talk to really. Oh my god! the trains were so dirty! rats everywhere, seriously. After designer subways in Bilbao, 3 year consecutive cleanest metro in Europe, I was entirely prepared for it. Well well, right now I'm getting the hang of it though. So it's very different from the Tokyo train ride I treasure ... read more

It's a strange peculiarity of east-coasters to refer to 'summer' as a verb, whether it is to "summer in Martha's Vineyard" or "going to summer upstate." Being the impoverished graduate students that we are, my roommate and I decided to "summer at Coney Island" the last weekend before our classes were to start. This involved a ridiculously long ride on the subway, stopping every two blocks as we made our way down to the shores of the Atlantic. Apparently, two hours on the F train gets to where the N train will take you in 45 minutes, but we didn't know this. So we sat, and waited. And waited and waited, stalled somewhere in Brooklyn wondering what possessed us to wake up so gosh-darn early in the first place as we glanced around the empty subway ... read more
