Huuuuuu!!! Nasla soma si divadlo, kde je kazdy vecer stand-up comedy show. Je tam platena scena, ale v podzemi je este jedna neformalna, ktora je zadarmo, ak si clovek objedna aspon jeden drink. Dala som ... read more

Hello All, Welcome to my blog. This is my first real blogging experience -- hiphip. The first adventure that we will experience together is NYC! It was a pretty spur of the moment trip, but fabulous. Evan and I left on a redeye on Sunday May 14, arriving into JFK airport at 6:30 Monday morning. This being Evans first trip to New York City we were on the go from the moment we got there, (minus my nap during rush hour traffic on the way to Quincy and Chloe's Brooklyn apartment). Day 1 - Monday March 15 - immediately after arriving their cute apartment, we head out for breakfast, delicious bagels and coffee. - its pretty rainy outside but not very cold, it didn't seem to lessen our morale, we were pretty stoked to be there. ... read more

We Left home early on a winter's morning and followed a quiet road through Adirondack park down to New York City. The sunrise reflecting off of the ice on the trees was a huge contrast to what was to come. I felt a bit like Pa Kettle going to the big city when it took me a minute to figure out how to open the coffee lid, or to work the motion detector controlled paper dispensers - At Grand Central Station I almost put cheese in the coffee instead of creamer! The first night out we stayed in Kingston, a historical town with covered sidewalks and an old senate building so that we could drive through New York early Sunday morning before anyone woke up. Since we were to stay in Brooklyn we drove over the ... read more

10 days to go... I am trying to fill myself up with New York, the sights, the sounds, my friends, my family. There's a sense that I'm going to lose them and miss them...but why should I feel this way when I know that they are part of me, and will always be with me? Last night I had my goodbye party. It was absolutely a blast and a great send-off. I could've had LESS to drink...but I'm always going to remember that night when I feel far away from home. I can't even believe what great friends I have, I hope that I will always be as good a friend to them as they are to me. Today my aunt had a little farewell party for me, complete with a TON of food, and presents ... read more

I arrived in New York and thought I may die of hypothermia! I am not sure I have ever felt so cold in all my life, I think the shock of going from 35 degrees to -6 was a little too much for my system! I have got used to the temperatures (and have also borrowed my friends duvet coat!) and made it out to see some of the sights of NY. My first day was spent visiting downtown Manhatten, where I took a ferry out past the Statue of Liberty - just managing to pop out on deck for long enough to take a photo before retreating back into the warm! I then walked up to the financial district where I visited the site of Ground 0, where there is currently a lot of building ... read more

Less than two weeks to go, and I'm already going crazy from the inactivity in my life!! I've actually thought about going back to work for a couple of days (GASP!) I almost just want to fly out of my skin and BE IN CAMEROON ALREADY! Random statistic: the hospital has about 200 beds, serving 180-200,000 people. That's a ratio of 1:1000. The US ratio is 1:32. WOW. Today I had another briefing session on all the things that I would see there..but for those travelling abroad, here are some things I am bringing with me: Nook (because that damned waterfall can't be THAT interesting) About 17 ebooks Steripen (for the cholera outbreak, and since I don't want to ALWAYS bathe in boiling water) Snake bit kit (includes tweezers, pump and torniquet. HARDCORE!) Antibiotics (Cipro, Amoxicillin ... read more

I was charge nurse again, and I handled 3 emergency situations, almost within 5 minutes apart, all while mentoring another nurse. I can't tell you the accomplished feeling I got. I realized I've grown up so much, developed thicker skin, and I'm pretty much very comfortable at my job and really got to learn the ropes. Many people have asked me to stay, but I honestly want to leave on a good note, and have a broader clinical experience. I'm just thinking to myself - the majority of the world has experienced malaria, why is it out of our clinical expertise? what about cholera? (By the way, there was a recent Cholera epidemic where I will be staying.) I was looking at my itinerary and I thinking of the moment when the plane takes off January, ... read more

It's December 15th and I'm about 42 days before my departure. There are so many little details to think about before I leave, like vaccines (did you know in certain places you have to carry a document, it's like a health passport for international vaccines?), health insurance, making sure I do my taxes before I leave, etc. Last night, in a quiet moment, I was petting my dog and thinking about how I wasn't going to see his face for six months. One major thing I HAVE to get done is my application for school. I think this is going to be a pretty special trip - it's never been so clear to me now or at any point in my life. It's funny because to think that a few years ago, I was having my ... read more
