Plato perches on top of his cage, feathers quivering (and he IS an old bird. A Grey African Parrot.). He is observing me prepare his daily fruit bowl containing no less than 10 different types of chopped up fruit. This is news for me as I was not aware that there were no many different varieties but I think he likes peanuts best and little green peas. He delicately strips of the outer layers , spits them on to the floor and chews up the rest. Plato does quite a lot of spitting food, but he’s old! Plato enjoys a challenge, his aim being to nip me whilst I feed him. I retaliate by squirting wate very close. Then he whistles and runs around. Sooooo am house sitting in the middle of nowhere, desert country south ... read more

September 27 – It was a bit brisk last night. I went by MacDonalds for my morning coffee and then headed into Santa Fe on Cerillos Road to spend some time at the central Plaza. The weather was cool and to my liking. I drove in on Cerillos Road which changed into Gallisteo St. which deadended at San Francisco Street. On San Francisco Street I took a right which took me alongside the Plaza. On the other end of the Plaza I took a left onto Washington Ave and found a place to park a couple of blocks up on the street just north of the Library which is at 145 Washington Ave. I parked on the street and fed the meter which charged $2.00 an hour to park. Then I walked back to the Plaza ... read more

August 3rd, 2013 10:30 Pm MDT Day 25 We left Springerville, AZ. at 5:50am and traveled 322 miles. Arrived here in Santa Fe at 7 o' clock this evening. The temperature was 50 degrees when we left this morning, so started out wearing long sleeved shirts and windbreakers. In about 14 miles we got into NM. We stopped in Old Town in Albuquerque and walked around a bit. Next was Al Unser's Racing Museum. Arrived there just before 3 and the museum was open until 4. Al was there and one of the guides told him that we'd driven our car from Pa. He was very personable and agreed to have his picture taken with us. When we were looking at the 1922 Model T Touring in the museum, Al Unser came over to us to tell ... read more

Our daughter Rosanna and son in law Evan spent their summer holidays with us. Besides visiting the sights in our local area we took an overnight trip to Santa Fe as Evan had never been to the southwest United States. 4 August 2013 Sunday. We hit the road at 8:30 am, with Linda and I, Rosanna and Evan, and our two year old grandson Liam, whose mother Tamara stayed behind as she had a doctors appointment on Monday...besides someone had to feed the pets. We took I-25 and US 160 to get to Great Sand Dunes National Park, arriving by 11:15 am. After a quick stop at the visitor center, we parked near the dunes and hiked across the sand to climb the nearest dune. Linda and I only made it part way. Rosanna and Evan ... read more

Well, here I am. Sitting in my dad's home office in the house that I grew up in New Mexico. Photographs of my dad's racing days, my brothers first motorcycle trophy, a photo of me beside my first horse and a model helicopter are still sit on the shelves. My dog is asleep on my feet. And while yes, this has always been home to me, I have a new home now too. They say that home is where the heart is, and if that is true then I have homes all over the world. But nowhere more so than the United States and Fiji. I have been back stateside for just about a week now. It is wonderful and absolutely horrible all at the same time. I missed my family, my Jeep and motorcycles, my ... read more

Geo: 35.6915, -105.937Unpacking, Repacking, its what we do Volunteer at the WildEarth Guardians BarbqSeems that we just cannot stay away. Just got back to Santa Fe from three weeks in northern California and are ready to get back on the road. There are some fires burning near Santa Fe but the smoke is not as bad as we feared. We went to our exercise class and got some much needed stretching and a reminder that this is an important activity to do on a regular basis.Did some necessary unpacking, clothes washing and repacking and cleaning of the camper before we got it loaded up and ready to go.We had volunteered to help with WildEarth Guardians Barbeque. We arrived early so we were able to get a good parking space. Helped get things set out and decide ... read more

... read more

We were going to take a taxi to the Railrunner station but Sophie offered to take us there so we took her up on that.We managed to get everything loaded up and headed out. Geo: 35.6915, -105.937Cochiti Lake is on Pueblo land about 35 minutes south of Santa Fe. There are two entrances. Tertilla Peak Entrance opens in spring, and we had not been there in some time. The huge launch is quite steep so we went around the waterfront to a more level place to air up our Sea Eagle and prepare for the paddle. We could see birds on the water and the clouds on the mountains looked quite forbodeing, but the forecast was for a small chance so we went for it.We were paddling along a cliff face when we were startled by what might have been and owl flying out of a nest in the rocks. We spotted some fisher ducks that Laura determined were Western Grebes. They made exotic calls to each other, strange, echoing sounds on ... read more

Geo: 35.6915, -105.937We signed up for another river restoration/tree planting with WildEarth Guardians. This time it was going to be in the Valles Caldera. We decided to go up the day before like we had done the other time but this time we camped in the Jemez Falls Campground seven miles from the entrance to the Valles Caldera. We took the scenic route up through Los Alamos, past the guard station with no problem and amazingly were some of the last people to arrive at the campsite before it was "campground full"! We had ourselves a nice dinner, and watched the comings and goings of our neighbors. We were surprised to see that there was not a burn ban in effect and people had their campfires blazing! We had looked at the weather before going up there ... read more
