Geo: 35.6915, -105.937Within the span of one day of driving we went from the heat of El Paso to the cool temperatures of Albuquerque, New Mexico. On this road trip we've seen a large spectrum of weather types, so why does a bout of cold temperatures matter? Well Deb B (the female half of the Killer B's) surprised her hubbie on his birthday with a trip to New Mexico to join us on our road trip for a couple of weeks. So again, why are the cooler temps a potential problem? First of all we think that the Killer B's are expecting to escape a Canadian winter for at least a short period of time- but the temperatures in Toronto have actually been higher than those of Albuquerque so far this year. And secondly, since Dave ... read more

Geo: 35.6915, -105.937Before we left Albuquerque, we stopped at the Museum of Natural History and Science. It had a lot of info about the history of New Mexico. After that we drove over to Santa Fe. We checked into our B&B and headed over to the old part of town. We had some lunch and then toured the San Miguel Mission Church. It is considered the oldest active church in the nation. After that we visited the oldest adobe house in Santa Fe. It was originally constructed in 1200 AD. It has been added onto and reconstructed several times. But there are several parts of it that are original. We then visited the Loretto Chapel. It has a really neat staircase that goes up to the choir loft. The staircase looks like it is floating in ... read more

I talked Les into staying at camp yesterday, so today I got up and accompanied him on a road trip. We took the "Turquoise Hwy" from ABQ to Santa Fe. It is supposed to be the 6th most scenic highway in he US. It was a nice drive, but neither of us were able to figure out how it got that designation. It is desert of prairie looking land with pretty mountains around it. It isn't much prettier than the Permain Basin would be with a ring of mountains around it. Of well, no one asked me to vote on that list. So I'll just hush for now. We walked around the square in old town Santa Fe and looked at the handmade goods being sold by Indians on the sidewalk on one side of the ... read more

Just wanted to add another pic taken today and the "Singing Hwy" video. I attached them to tonight's blog, but they didn't attach. Not sure why. Maybe I'm attaching too many pics at one time. Les just noticed that they have disabled the ability to add a video to the blog. So I'll have to save that video for the time that it is again enabled.... read more

Wednesday we had to be at the boat yard by noon then the owner called and said 11:45. We were slow to leave camp but had time to run to the plaza to view the Loretto Chapel. This is no longer an active church but it's history is amazing. The staircase is the big attraction. The church was also very pretty and beautiful stained glass - love this. http://www.lorettochapel.com/index.html $3 entry free for all day. Walked back to the car - these bronze pieces were at a gallery and so pretty. Found our way into the park from yesterday for a quick sandwich. Off to river rafting. Signed our lives away on the waiver then loaded up. Our guide was Joe and safety person Katy. I think the waiver is more for the drive up and ... read more

Got up and made some breakfast on the camp stove. Then off the to the nice hot shower. The KOA also had a dishwashing station with instant hot water and everything needed. Awesome. Then decided first thing wanted to see the petraglyphs. This was way out in the booneys past the airport. Benefit to this no one else around at all. I misread the website that said easy 5 to 10 minute walk. On second look that is to the base of the cliffs LOL. But I really wanted to see them so I climbed with my trusty walking stick. It was a very difficult climb - lots of loose rock. But we made it and the petraglyphs were amazing and work all the effort. A big challenge for me! http://www.blm.gov/nm/st/en/prog/recreation/taos/la_cieneguilla.html#_=_ Next we went down the ... read more

We left out late on Labor Day about 7am. We took a bit different route west this time - 20 to Sweetwater then NW on 84 into New Mexico. This let me see a part of West Texas I haven't seen in a while & a part of New Mexico I haven't seen. Arrived at campground KOA about 6pm their time gained an hour. Beautiful and highly recommended campground. The hosts were very nice. Clean & newly remodeled bathhouse with instant hot water. We didn't check it out but they had a good size barn that was a game room over on the other side of the property. Two or three common areas. One up by the office with a grill and lots of patio furniture to hang out and talk. Very dog friendly camp. Campsite ... read more

After setting up camp we headed up northbound to find some dinner then go have a bit of fun. Didn't find anything along the way. Ended up at Buffalo Thunder Casino Resort. It's a huge property and had lot's of dinner choices. We decided to eat at Iguana Cafe. Nice but not overdone. Very good New Mexican food. They do not just send out every table the same chips / salsa / guacamole. They have a made to order bar - we got just salsa. The young man doing this had my husband taste test till just right. Very hot but very tasty. My husband David had chicken with mole sauce - he liked it but said a bit too much chocolate for him. I had pork tamales with red chile sauce - pork was super ... read more

On my first trip to Santa Fe in 1974, I was introduced to the International Museum of Folk Art. This was in late August or early September. I had just returned from spending the summer on a shoestring in Europe and had the privilege of visiting many fine museums – the National Museum in London, the Louvre & the Musee de Orsay in Paris , the Hermitage in Leningrad and the Glyptotek in Copenhagen were my favorites. But after all of that - when I started to wander through the Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe, my heart sang. It was a magnificent collection that was assembled largely by one couple, the Girards. Alexander Girard was a major designer and he essentially developed ‘brand looks’ for companies like Braniff Airlines and other companies too large to ... read more

My husband fell in love with another woman today – her name is Santa Fe. I expected it to happen, I wanted it to happen, but I didn’t realize how hard he would fall. A one or maybe two day stay became a three, close to four day stay. In that time we didn’t cover a small part of the total of Santa Fe. Day one was shortened by our messing around in a store in Albuquerque – let’s just say that a WalMart at the intersection of two interstates is an experience to behold. It must have covered four acres and had more stuff that we don’t need than I could ever imagine. The best part of the day was the Georgia O’Keefe Museum. A small, gem of a museum devoted to Ms. O’Keefe and ... read more
