Yesterday while spending some time snorkeling and hanging out with my two golden retrievers, I met some surveyors that were checking up on a turtle nest. Every morning some volunteers will cruise the beach and look for turtle tracks left behind by the females coming on shore to dig a hole and deposit 80 to 120 golf-ball size eggs. The nests will be marked and registered and 50 days later the hatch-lings will dig themselves out in a group effort and head out in the ocean. 3 days after the hatching the surveyors will come back and dig up the nest to count the empty shells, infertile eggs and maybe save some turtles that where left behind in the mass exodus. The nest we were checking out that day had 47 empty shells and 24 infertile ... read more

Ok this is my first Blog and to be honest I never even folowed one.. Not that I am not interested but mostly because I am so involved in my own adventures that I simply did not get the Idea to follow someone elses. I read a few entries here and there and found interesting facts and information. This blog will hopefully give you some usefull information as well but since it is mainly about my travels and experiences it might lack on hotel info flights and the nightlife actions of the common tourist. I don't view myself as one and my interests are mainly in nature and people that live close to nature and with it instead of against it. I avoid cities if possible and travel the back country roads and folow them to ... read more

Wahoo! I am back behind the wheel of a car – even if they drive on the wrong side of the road. Our first big road trip of the vacation was down to Key West. Luckily Alamo Car Rentals had upgraded us to a Camry; comfy on long straight US roads. Wow, what a drive, cruising on the highway at 70 – 80 mph. The trip from Miami to Key West has a spectacular series of bridges and Islands. In Key West we tried “lime pie”, looked at Ernest Hemmingway’s house, and the southernmost point of continental USA. This claim seemed somewhat dubious to me because we were on an island. We had dinner at a local institution, “Sloppy Joe’s”, where the live band played some great tunes. While eating dinner, we witnessed two middle aged ... read more

We got up around 7:30, had coffee and OJ on the back porch. It’s another beautiful day. We hate to say goodbye to this place. But I hate even more saying goodbye to Lola and Jason. Lola goes back to North Carolina August 5thto be with her mom during the school year. It feels like my heart is going to break and I have to control my emotions. As I have said many times, I hate this part of a trip, but the feeling is intensified this time. We clean up and leave around 9:45. We stopped at a shell shop on the way home. Lola got 2 sand dollars and Jason bought her some ‘Pirate coins’. We stopped at a waterside restaurant for breakfast. http://www.islandfishco.com/restaurant-tiki-bar.htm Jason and I got Benedicts: Poached eggs and ham over ... read more

Ken and I get up at 8am and let Jason and Lola sleep. It is windy today. We can see small white caps on the water. It’s our last day here….sad…but we have had a wonderful time. Ken makes coffee and I join him up on the top porch to enjoy the morning. The houseboat still is anchored out in the distance. It’s a great day for sailboats and we see some going out. Jason and Lola get up, we let them sleep because the wind is so strong; we can’t go out on the Sea Doos. As they join us on the porch, a storm kicks up and the rain starts. It is so beautiful but quickly forces us inside. The rain only lasted a few minutes and now the sun is out and a ... read more

Ken woke up around 8 am and made coffee. Jason and I got up; we drank coffee out on the back porch. There is not much of a breeze and the morning son is hot. We decide to go back inside. Lola is still sleeping. We decide to let her sleep. She worked so hard at swimming yesterday, she probably needs the rest. I decide at 11 am to wake her up. Their bedroom is so dark because of the hurricane shutters that roll down. It makes for a wonderful sleep. Lola and I eat yogurt while Pops makes eggs and bacon. After breakfast it’s time for Sea Doos. We butter up and head out. Lola is going to ride with her Daddy today on the fastest Sea Doo. She is so excited. It’s a gorgeous ... read more

Ken is up as usual before anyone else and he makes coffee. Lola and I lingered in bed, looking out at the water from our window. The water is calm so we decide to kayak first thing after coffee. Lola went with Daddy and Ken and I were together. Lola had no trouble rowing but got tired, saying the oars were too heavy. The bay is shallow so you can see coral and the sea bottom very easily. We hadn’t had breakfast so we head to Five Brothers Grocery for breakfast. It is a local Cuban storerestaurant known for its café con leche and sandwiches. We are so disappointed when we pull up to the lot and it is closed for vacation from July 2-July 30. My kind of living! We head to Winn Dixie and ... read more

Woke up around 9 am, Ken made coffee. Lola and I had blueberry wheat waffles and OJ on the porch, watching the boats go out. Today the guys are taking us on the Sea Doos. We butter up (put lots of sun screen on) and get ready. Jason takes the fast (red) Sea Doo and Ken, Lola and I take the blue one. Lola is between both of us. We drove out to some docks and tied off so we could snorkel and swim. The water is only waist deep, so warm and clear. We stayed out there for about an hour and head back home. Lola loves the Sea Doo and is not afraid at all. We swam in the pool, I went upstairs and made some lunch and brought it down by the pool. ... read more

Woke up around 8 am and had coffee and OJ on the back porch. We had Whole Wheat blueberry waffles for breakfast. It is raining so we are going to drive to Key West (28 miles away).By the time we arrived the rain had stopped and the sun came out. It made it steamy. You really notice how much living right on the water with ocean breezes keeps the temperature cooler. We walked to the southernmost part of the US, and then walked around the town. Lola had worn her water shoes, and they began to cause a blister, so we found a store that sold flip flops and Jason bought her a pair. We walked to a restaurant and ordered lunch, yellow snapper, grouper and a hot dog for Lola. It was a funky place ... read more

Got up around 8:30 am, ate breakfast outside near the ocean. We packed up and left for the Ramrod Key. It was a beautiful drive, about 3 hours from Ft Lauderdale. We arrived around 1pm. The house is absolutely gorgeous; I can’t believe we get to stay here for a week. I went to the grocery, picked up bait, while the guys and Lola stayed at home. We swan for a while then we cooked dinner: grilled chicken, rice and salad. We ate dinner on the porch (third floor overlooking the water) and went to bed. There was a huge thunderstorm during the night, making the house shake. It was wonderful!... read more
