We finally reached our most South East destination - Key West, Florida - our trip only goes West from here! Overseas Highway, the 125 mile long road connecting numerous small gems of islands that are like a broken necklace, ending in the very quaint, historic town of Key West. But most surprising of all, was how busy and chick it was, entertaining all age groups, with stores, pubs, restaurants, bed & breakfasts, historic houses, and best of all - a busy marina, which had 2 cruise ships in the day we were there. Needless to say, the streets were teaming with people until late at night, when most pubs provided live entertainment, all competing as to who could play the loudest music. Reminded us very much of Mexico. We found a wonderful Bed & Breakfast (Old ... read more

Last two days went by so quickly. Dinner with the officers was very nice and the wine flowed! Defended our title on the last sea day for progressive and we had to turn the trophy over to another team! We lost by one point but did win a free drink from Julie for winning 3 out of 6 days. The behind the scenes tour was fascinating- can't imagine the size of the main galley and they way they do laundry. there is a machine that dries and folds the sheets! Backstage was also fun to see all the costumes, feathers and beads- we got some beads from the wardrobe master for our trophy. Spent the last day getting pics with the staff - they were all so nice - i will really miss my home away ... read more

Waking up after a long week and craving a getaway, a decision was randomly made...Key West baby! Escaping Miami's crazy tourists for just plain craziness. We piled in a car with what looked like enough bags for a cross-Atlantic move, drank our coffee, and cranked the music. It was the start of a weekend getaway only three hours south of Miami, but mentally a first class flight. As we arrive to the Key we search the address for our hotel, Casa 325. According to the site, it sits on the main strip of Duval Street, but lays "nestled" away. Nestled indeed...it took us three rounds around the block to finally notice a narrow cobblestone path leading to our little cove. Note that at 11 am we were not all with the program just yet. As we ... read more

Gilles Labruyere sent another nice cartoon - it summarizes my trip completely accurate: icebergs are everywhere. But here in Key West, they melt faster. I plotted in the meantime my trip so far, and we are by far on the most Southern point here (24'33"), and DDN is closer to the equator than ever. And the most Northern point so far was Ilulissat (69'14"N), so we have changed latitude quite a bit. Today we start heading back North, Regina finds it too hot here. But apparently, Key West is one of the colder spots in the US at the moment, a heat wave seems to be in the mid-west. We'll see... ... read more

Now DDN had its well deserved rest of four days, while Regina and I enjoyed our stay with Steve & Marga: one day the Cocoa Beach, then Manatees and alligators in the wilderness of the Blue Springs of the St Johns river. Next day we went with Bob and Glenys to the Fantasy of Flight airplane collection - many beautiful and rare airplanes in an exhibit in Polk city near Orlando. A great airplane museum, although the founder Kermit Weeks sees it more as an entertainment park. And yesterday we went with Marga to the Morse Museum in Winterpark, which has the largest collection of Tiffany art. Each of these events was a nice vacation in itself, and we enjoyed our stay very much. Steve & Marga, Bob & Glenys, please visit us in Leiden when ... read more

We Drove...and drove...and....opps...ran out of land! We drove down and across the Florida Keys. The Keys are a set of islands south and west of the tip of Florida. Many of them are connected by bridges, 48 bridges actually. The bridges were originally built by a guy named Flagler. He had them built for trains. His idea was that if he could get people to the islands, they would spend money and they did! Unfortunately, a big hurricane took out some of his bridges. When they were rebuilt, they were built for cars and trains. So, his plan worked and people came, and people spend money! Many wealthy people fell in love with the islands and built beautiful homes on the islands. They also built many hotels along the beaches. One of the keys, url= http://www.fl ... read more

Wednesday 8th June 2011 – Friday 10th 2011 Wednesday morning started at about 3.30am as we had to be on our way by 4.15am to leave the car in the long-term parking area and then book in for our flight. We did have enough time to go to the United Lounge, Ed being a member. Here, we were able to have a cereal breakfast and take some fruit for the 4 hour flight to Fort Lauderdale. The flight was quite comfortable, we having seats with extra legroom thanks to Ed's frequent flyer status, and some sleep was caught up. We had a quick lunch before going to claim our baggage, only to find our bags were lying abandoned on the now still conveyer. There was a slight delay in picking up the hire car but when ... read more

May 22, 2011, 2011 Hello again, Looks like they changed the blog. You have to scroll down to see all the picutures. There are 9 pictures attached to this Blog :). We are sitting again in Boot Key Harbor. Florida Keys. We had crossed over to Sandy Point in the Abacos and then tried to cross abound “Hole in the Wall” at the south end of the Abacos and ran into big waves coming off the Atlantic ocean. We went from 2’ seas to 10’-12’ chop (Carol’s version is growing to 15’-20’). As they say, the boat can take it be we humans cannot. So we turned and ran back to the Berry islands. We spent about a week there gathering conch, snorkeling and preparing to make our next passage. There are two islands there that ... read more

Leaving Sanibel we down through the Everglades down to Key West. What a Longgggg drive. I am amazed at all of the things I remember. The 7 mile bridge is still there, but so much better. It is a long drive down the Keys. We were at a great little B&B across the street from the Hemingway House and next the Lighthouse, plus one block off Duval, Lighthouse Court. Once there, we met up with my niece Stephanie. She has lived there for the last 10 years. The perfect tour guide. We headed over to Mallory Square for Tapas at at great little Cuban restaurant. Then we hung out for the Sunset Festival. Stephanie had to work that night, so we were on our own. Oh, oh! We started the bar crawl on Duval Street at ... read more

Südlich von St. Petersburg gaben ... read more
