Our ship put in at Key West on Day 4. In the harbor was a private yacht owned by an NFL quarterback (we never figured out which one). We rented a street-legal golf cart to tour the town. As you might expect, it then rained heavily. Our cart stalled in the middle of a flooded intersection and we had to be rescued. We skipped the Hemingway house (how many 5-toed cats do you need to see?) and went instead to Sloppy Joe's. Matthew and Michael had fun spotting the many Ernest Hemingway look-alikes. After we ate, the women led us on a shopping spree (what else?). Key West is a wonderful town and we all decided we would like to return someday.... read more

If you're a Cuban, hit the shore and swim 90 miles north. If you're a tourist, get out of Miami and drive 3.5 hours south. We belong to the latter category; the tourists who have heard of this "must" when in southern Florida, this legendary trip to Key West. Surprisingly, the road isn't all that exciting. Movies display this romantic voyage on the highway on the water. In fact, it is merely a regular highway between and through the 40 or so islands - keys - before the final destination. Key West, the southernmost point on continental USA. This key makes it all worthwhile the trip though to what seems to be the most idyllic place on earth. Life is slow, tourists are slow, traffic is slow, even the pelicans are slow. People are friendly, people ... read more

Geo: 24.5541, -81.801Mid-60s. Windy. After mid-morning breakfast, headed for Key West. Took wrong turns a couple of times. Drove a lot on surface streets. Finally found turnpick. Took of 10, 20 cents. Interesting trip to Key West. Nice to make once; wouldn't want to make a habit of it. Some lovely views of bay. Lots of nice tropical homes on stilts. Also, very much highway driving. All camping outrageously priced. Even State Parks are $23.50 for tent space. Walked around Key West shops. Bought t-shirts for Christmas gifts. Ogled stud and leather shops. Paul was winked at in Fast Buck Freddie's. On return, had good dinner in Islamorada (the Green Turtle). I had grouper; Paul had alligator. Very macho. Walls covered with photos and newspaper clippings of huge fish caught in local waters. Full meal (soup -- conch-chowder ... read more
