Day 6 May 9, 2013 Chris went on the internet and found a great place to eat breakfast called “the Deli” about six blocks away from where wee are staying. The menu looked good and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. The weather was perfect – mid 70’s light breeze, sunny skies, it doesn’t get much better than this. When we arrived at the restaurant we discovered that “The Deli” had metamorphed into “Better than Sex”. We couldn’t find out if it was indeed better than sex because it only serves desserts and didn’t open until 4 pm. This is yet another example that the internet is not to be taken at face value. We ended up eating at Denny’s because it was nearby and we were hungry. After breakfast Chris & I decided to take ... read more

Day 5 Got up really, really early because I fell asleep really, really early so I decided to get an early, early start. I left the hotel and went searching for a car wash so I could remove the fifteen million bugs that decided to die on my windshield. When I was able to see again, I continued onto journey to Key West. The weather was beautiful and traffic was very light. I stopped for gas outside of Palm Beach and saw a perfectly still lake with lots of reeds that would have been a great picture, but there was no place to pull over. I was very disappointed. The ride through southern Florida was mostly non-eventful, except that I almost got caught in a speed trap outside Miami. Floridians drive much like we do ... read more

Yesterday was a great day. We went on a Kayak nature tour by Big Pine Kayak Adventures. It turned out to be a private tour, just the guide, Dennis and myself. After paddling across the channel to No Name Key we went on the trail through the mangroves. It felt a bit other-worldly, very mysterious deep in the mangroves. We saw a huge heron, many fish, a small barracuda, crabs, colorful spiders and, thankfully no snakes. We came out into a shallow pond containing thousands of jelly fish. It was a unique adventure that I highly recommend. In the evening we went to Mangrove Mama's where I enjoyed some excellent snapper and Dennis tried a lobster Reuben which had been recommended by our kayak guide, Cris. It sounds strange, but was actually quite tasty. The band ... read more

Catching up - Days Inn Silver Springs Florida is the worst Days Inn I've ever seen. Drive on to Ocala - plenty of hotels to choose from. We've been in the Keys a couple of days now. Our rental here on Ramrod Kay is fantastic! It's almost as big as our house in Illinois and in a great location to get to everything. The first night we were tired from a long day of driving and went to the nearby Boondocks bar. Good food and entertainment. We spent yesterday at Key West. Highlights were lunch at Salute! - right on the beach (where the food was great and relatively inexpensive) and drinks at the top of the Holiday Inn with 360 degree views. We bought tickets on the City View trolleys; it's a pretty good deal ... read more

My first week in Islamorada was coming to a close. The sun had set and the dusk was dwindling. The only thing on the agenda was laundry and reading. I was not super excited about that. So, I decided it was time to venture out on my own again, even if just for a day. Sunday night I packed up my little old car and headed to Key West. Key West is the last island in the Florida Keys. To get there I would have to continue driving on the one-lane no passing road for two hours, crossing over dozens of other islands, through a protected deer area and over the seven-mile bridge. I sent out a few Couch Surfing requests. For those who don’t know, Couch Surfing is an online network of people willing to ... read more

Monday, 4 March, 2013 Have you noticed I seem to run out of things to write as we near the end of a trip? This has been a fairly quiet week. We had softball on Tuesday and Thursday as usual. I took a few pictures at the games, which wouldn’t interest most of you. We did some laundry, some grocery shopping, the normal day to day activities. I rode my bicycle a little around the campground. The weather turned cooler over this past weekend, with some rain showers mixed in. By Sunday morning it was cool and quite windy with morning showers. Whether or not the softball game on Sunday afternoon would be played as scheduled was in question. Once we reached the park, however, all doubts were gone. We were early, but already a dozen ... read more

Sunday, 24 February, 2013 Monday we went down to Big Pine Key where we did laundry and bought groceries. We saw one of the little Key deer crossing the highway. Tuesday was a drizzly kind of day. We managed to get a softball game completed with only a few sprinkles early on. We had more rain in the afternoon, but not gully washers. Kerry went to Big Pine Key for pizza for supper and called me on his way back to tell me there was a rainbow over the ocean. I grabbed my bike and camera and rode to the beach on the Atlantic Ocean side to take pictures. The rainbow made a complete arc from the ocean over the island to the Florida Bay. It seemed brighter on the bay side, so I rode over ... read more

Monday, 18 February 2013 Happy Presidents’ Day. Let’s get caught up. Wednesday we drove down to Summerland Key to the Wharf Bar and Grill for supper where we dined on BLTs. Not just bacon, lettuce and tomato, but bacon, LOBSTER and tomato, huge sandwiches too tasty to be served just anywhere. We could have split one and had plenty, but we didn’t know that and ordered a sandwich and fries each. Needless to say, we did not go home hungry. Thursday was another big day, softball in the morning and wings at night. It was just one more fabulous day here in the Keys. We rode our bicycles around the park on Friday, stopping at the Sand and Sea Nature Center and the Gift shop before heading back to the camper to avoid the rain. It ... read more

Wednesday, 13 February, 2013 Has it been a week since last I blogged? Well, Thursday it was softball in the morning, and another beautiful morning it was. Kerry did a little fishing in the afternoon and caught a little fish, a very little cow fish, but a fish nonetheless. Of course Thursday night was wing night at the Hurricane. It was just the two of us, but the wings were excellent as usual. It seemed exceptionally noisy at the Hurricane, I think because we sat in the room without carpet and all the chatter and noise echoed. Friday we just relaxed and watched the ocean. It has been quite windy and the kite boarders and sailboats have been out in full force. We were entertained by a wee gecko, who seemed to be dreaming of growing ... read more

Sunday, 27 January, 2013 I’m back. Did you miss me? Wednesday we moved again, this time to site 33 in Long Key State Park. It’s only a short way down the road from the other sites where we stayed, but a different perspective. The beach here is a little rockier and we are on the other side of the point with the tree in the water. The gulls and pelicans like to sit on the rocks when they are showing above the water at low tide. Thursday is wing night at the Hurricane, and this time we had our new friends along to experience the wingness. Don and Ruth Anne from Virginia and Jack and Mary Lou from New York state had their first Hurricane wings. Everyone enjoyed the wings and the ambience and we all ... read more
