After over 6 weeks on the road, freezing in Nashville and Bella Vista, jacket weather in TX, LA, MS, AL and the Panhandle of FL, and after 3 days of rain in Cape Coral, we have finally found summer. And not just any summer, but the laid back summer Jimmy Buffet sings about, "changes in latitude; changes in attitude," The Keys! I've been to Florida many times, but this is my first time in the Keys. We left Homestead around 9:00 am on Sunday, Feb. 2 (yes, it was Super Bowl Sunday) and headed south on Card Sound Road instead of Highway 1 because the waitress at Capri the night before had recommended we go that way. Less crowded, she said, and more scenic - mangrove swamps instead of concrete. This bridge had a $1 toll, ... read more

So why Florida, I hear you wondering. One reason is Miami, which I am now compelled to add to Barcelona, San Francisco, Amsterdam and others on my short list of favorite cities. An endless white beach separates the Atlantic from a wall of skyscrapers. This is Miami Beach, a narrow archipelago separated from the rest of Miami by Biscayne Bay. Miami Beach is paved with money. The waterways are lined with absurdly large mansions -- yachts parked out back, Bentleys out front. No place to squeeze an extra guest for this weekend's bash? No problem. There are plenty of absurdly lavish hotels a few blocks away. And no one needs to be more than a two-minute walk from their broker's office. Sitting on the white powder beach in front of the Fontainebleau, watching a ... read more

Geo: 24.5541, -81.801We took a little trip to Key West while our nephew, William visited. Key West pics are up. Jan. 14th, 2014 – Manatee at the Dinghy DockHi Folks,Yes, we are still in Coconut Grove. Yes. We still love it here! There are a number of Manatee that we see at the dinghy dock on a regular basis. It seems like there's a family - two large ones and a baby. Here are some pictures of the largest one taking a drink of fresh water, and then taking a deep breath before swimming away. The novelty of seeing Manatee has not worn off, and I doubt it ever will! (I do, however, refrain from jumping up and down, screaming and pointing now. I can now just watch in awe!)When we come into the dinghy dock ... read more

Today we headed down to the Florida Keys for a day of fun in the sun. The drive down was pretty interesting, with water on both sides of the road for some stretches, and quite the long bridges. Seeing iguanas on the road and sides of the road all during the drive was pretty neat as well. Wasn't able to get a picture of any of them though, as if we got close they would run away, and the other times the road was too tight to stop on the side and take a picture. Hopefully get one on the way back! Saw the sunset over the ocean which was beautiful. Along with the sail boats that kept going side to side in front of the setting sun. There were many street performers on the boardwalk ... read more

Woah, where did the time go, those couple of days flew by. Sadly had to pack up and check, out of the lovely hotel and say goodbye to one of the coolest places on earth. Not before enjoying another free breakfast and a few sneaked treats to enjoy on the long journey ahead. A duller day, drove back up the keys, over the endless bridges back towards Miami. Heading over to the Gulf coast, decided against the road known as Alligator Alley as it is a four lane highway and am pretty sure any sensible 'gator will have backed his bags and headed away from the traffic fumes and noise. We took highway 41, just a regular road and cut straight through the heart of the Everglades national park. Sensed Alex's frustration 30 minutes into the drive ... read more

Up early to keep a close eye out for breakfast being served! Helped ourselves to bagels, jelly, cream cheese and peanut butter, Alex added 2 muffins and 2 apples! After all that food, headed off to one of the many cycle hire places, options were, electric car (too easy) moped (alex convinced we would come off it) tandem (yeah right) or bicycle. So a nice turquoise one for me and a slightly more mach one for Alex (apart from the rather camp basket). Now thankfully Florida is the flattest state in the US I have ever been to and Key West is no exception, ( cue my knees giving thanks to the god of muscles and joints). So in theory this should be easy...one drawback, no brakes, apparently just back pedal, hmmm interesting. Scraped 2 inches ... read more

After free coffee in the tiki bar and a walk around the pretty harbour taking photos, we made the half hour journey to Key West. The architecture was exactly as I had imagined, chocolate box pretty clapboard victorian houses, all in pristine condition with lush gardens and shady porches complete with requisite rocking chairs. You could almost imagine Ernest Hemingway scribbling away at one of his novels with his six toed cat at his feet. Found the hotel, The Chelsea house, shame about the name! But it was exquisitely pretty and unusual for the area, parking right next door. We were way too early to check in so took ourselves off to Walgreens to stock up on shower gels and other absolute necessities such as bug spray!! Left the car in the hotel lot and walked ... read more

So, after 18 days and 6800-odd miles we arrived in Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades) USA. The clocks had gone back 5 times in 7 days. That meant 5 extra hours in bed!! We thought as this is the ship's inaugural crossing and first time to Ft. Lauderdale we would be greeted by a brass band and treated to a firework display. The Royal Princess came along side at just after 3.30am. No brass band. No fireworks. The local elementary school band and a roman candle would have sufficed! Nothing too flash. The only noise that could be heard was the snoring from where the ships bulkhead was missing a rivet or two outside Linda's cabin!!! (she obviously had no luck with the Maintenance Department!!) Speaking of the clocks going back another bizarre thing happened. We had ... read more
