Up early to keep a close eye out for breakfast being served! Helped ourselves to bagels, jelly, cream cheese and peanut butter, Alex added 2 muffins and 2 apples!
After all that food, headed off to one of the many cycle hire places, options were, electric car (too easy) moped (alex convinced we would come off it) tandem (yeah right) or bicycle. So a nice turquoise one for me and a slightly more mach one for Alex (apart from the rather camp basket). Now thankfully Florida is the flattest state in the US I have ever been to and Key West is no exception, ( cue my knees giving thanks to the god of muscles and joints). So in theory this should be easy...one drawback, no brakes, apparently just back pedal, hmmm interesting. Scraped 2 inches of rubber off the soles of my trainers, each time I reached a junction and forgot to back pedal. Now everyone who knows me will know I have an aversion to helmets so the offer of one was swiftly declined, in this humidity, my hair + helmet= me looking like something that just crawled out of an Everglades swamp.
So helmet free, we
cycled romantically down the quaint avenues, the neighbourhood treated to the sound of me screaming at Alex in front: "Do you know where the hell we are going, stop wobbling all over the road, OMG I am not going over that steep bridge."
Actually had a lovely day, pretty much saw the whole town, cycled along the harbour and saw the big Carnival cruise ship in port, then went to view the amazing power boats in town for the week long races.
Reluctantly dropped the bikes back at the rental place and walked home like a pair of weary cowboys.
That nights entertainment, chose one of the few places with no live music (a quiet chance to chat and enjoy a little peacefulness). Ok well that was the plan...had a lovely Mexican meal, washed down with Mexican beer, sat overlooking the street and enjoying some people watching.
So much for a nice romantic meal and chat, enter 'Drew' a ponytailed attorney from west Florida, down in Key West working on a case. He specialised in Tort Law, which means he works for one of those no win-no fee type firms, becoming one of the fastest growing
sectors of law all over the world. Once known as ambulance chasers, these guys are hot shots and earning huge amounts of money.
Now wherever we go in the world, we find ourselves talking to the occasional local and inevitably the conversations ends up on politics, this was exactly the case with Drew, on this trip so far, as soon as we mention we are from Spain, people want to know if the economy is as bad as it is touted on the news. Well that'll be a yes then! People here seem fascinated by the state of the economy in Europe, I guess a way of taking their minds off their own economy and endless Obama bashing.
Had a good chat with Drew, seemed like a good guy and actually swapped numbers in case we wanted to meet up in Naples, our next destination and his home town.
Just got back to the hotel before the heavens opened and we watched a typical Floridian rainstorm from the comfort of our room, lasted about 5 minutes.
