As I mentioned in the previous blog, we recently had Sven visiting us for a few weeks, but we've also had my Aunty and Uncle, David and Leona here, so it's been a very busy house lately. They both timed their visits really well as they were here for the 4th of July. This is a pretty crazy day over here as the Yanks love nothing more than to celebrate their freedom, so the place turns into a massive street party followed by a warzone of fireworks after dark. This year the Jacksonville Beach council were setting off fireworks down at the local pier which we can see from our balcony, so we decided that we should host the 4th of July party and Aussie it up a bit. We've inherited a heap of alcohol from ... read more

We left Hilton Head Saturday and drove to Jacksonville, FL to see our son and daughter-in-law. The original plan was to camp at the county park in Jacksonville, Kathryn Abby Hannah, right on the Atlantic with both kids. Unfortunately Jen had to study for a test, but Josh came to spend the night and show us around the park. We had a great site, enjoyed relaxing and having smores and then the next day packed up and left. Hannah Park is camping the way it used to be with tents and RVs co-mingled and trees and foliage making you feel you were in old time Florida. We went to a little restaurant in Mayport, Singleton’s, for seafood lunch. We had eaten here a couple of times before and enjoyed the seafood, view of the boats on ... read more

If it isn't fun, don't do it. You'll have to do enough that isn't. -Robert Creeley Here I am. Here we are. It's quite intimate, isn't it? We're here, you and I, trying to find some understanding. Well, let's not kid ourselves. I'm in the world wide web discussing private matters in a public place, as David Antin would rightfully assert, and there's nothing intimate about that. But please, friend, let's continue on with the exploitation! So no, I'm not yet in Ukraine, in case you're wondering, but throughout my limited years I've come to at least realize that things begin long before we think they do. Everything begins with a thought, does it not? In the case of traveling, it all begins with our cultural identity and the assumptions and expectations that come along with ... read more

Bonjour mes amis: Maintenant je suis un chien francais! NOT!! We had a good day today. My masters got us on the road around 7:30 AM after eating the motel-provided breakfast! We stopped for gas and then began our journey north, which will eventually take us home. Other than noticing our northward direction by the map and road signs, one of the three of us is beginning to notice that she is feeling the cooler weather. I'll leave it up to you to decide who that one of our group is! After a stop at a Florida Citrus Centre, we arrived at Keystone Heights. This was a highlight as my masters' good friend Burt Kettinger, met with them and ate lunch together. Burt gave my masters a tour of Park of the Palms Christian conference centre. ... read more

It's been a while since we've posted anything and this one is a chance to catch up on a couple of the smaller things we've been up to since we last posted - most notably I turned 30. We arrived back from the Snow Trip the day before my birthday and arranged to have a quiet dinner of my favorite American dish (Ribs) with our friends Leanne and Andy. Unbeknown to me my lovely, but scheming wife had been plotting with Leanne and had arranged a surprise birthday party for me (I've always said never trust two blondes together - regardless of what Jamo thinks). So we arrived at the restaurant to be greeted by about 25 people which I was not expecting at all! Best of all, Leanne had arranged a 'Face Cake' for me ... read more

Megan is competing in a gymnastics meet at Disney World this weekend. Flat Ryan is going to Disney! We will pack up this afternoon and make our way to Orlando, Florida. We travel all over Florida and some parts of the United States with gymnastics. Megan is a talented gymnast and practices at the gym 15 hours a week after school. Its is a very busy schedule. On weekends, she often travels to many destinations to compete at an elite level. Maybe one day she will be in the Olympics and Flat Ryan can say he traveled to meets with her when she was only 8 years old! Flat Ryan has learned more about gymnastics than he probably wants to know but, he was able to see some cool cities because of Megan's travels. Flat Ryan ... read more

We were able to enjoy some time at the beach today. Flat Ryan was excited to see the waves. He wanted to surf but I explained that he did not pack a wet suit. He settled for some fun in the sand. We also stopped by Nathan's first grade class to say hello. Some of the students have read the Flat Stanley book so they knew immediately who Flat Ryan was. The other kids enjoyed learning about this adventure. The kids looked on the map so Flat Ryan could show them where he is from. It was a busy day meeting everyone and lots of fun!!!... read more

Flat Ryan is safely back in Jacksonville, Florida. He will mail his third postcard tomorrow. It is a post card of the same spot at Florida State University where his photo was taken. Hopefully, your class will receive it soon. Since today is a holiday, Flat Ryan enjoyed the day playing games with the kids. We are hoping to get to the beach tomorrow. It rained today and was a bit cold to play at the beach. We will try to send pictures soon of Flat Ryan. He misses you and hopes you enjoy hearing of his adventures. ... read more

Flat Ryan sent an email today letting us know that he is having a wonderful time in Florida. He will be making a quick trip to Tallahassee with the Hughes family this weekend for a gymnastics meet. He has learned that Tallahassee is near Florida State University and that it is also the capitol of Florida. He plans to send a postcard from there to his classroom next week. Surprise...surprise! He has been invited to stay with the Hughes family through next weekend and travel with them to Disney World's Wide World of Sports for another gymnastics meet! How exciting! We never expected a trip to Disney while he was there. Those Hughes' are just full of surprises! Of course, we gave him permission to stay. Who knows what other surprises are in store for this ... read more
