First let me say: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JENNA! We love you. We’ve spent the last five days in Jacksonville; two at Ortega Yacht Club Marina and 3 at the municipal docks next to the Jaguars’ stadium, which is called EverBank Field (Gator Bowl.) The municipal docks are free (except during events,) we just pay for electricity. It’s pretty nice, but a long way from any stores, and there is a heck of a current going past and through. There’s a lot of water going in and out of the St. Johns River here. We get rocked a lot from the wakes of passing boats. Today we were entertained by the local marine law enforcement stopping boats and writing citations for speeding in a no wake zone. The Fire & Rescue boats and the Sheriff’s boats are kept ... read more

Sunday morning we were up early, eating a hearty breakfast at Pat’s Riverside Café at the marina. Then it was back on our way again. It was blessedly quiet all morning after Saturday afternoon’s madness, but the crazy boaters were out in force again after lunch. By the time we got to St. Augustine in the late afternoon, they’d had time to consume a few adult beverages and were having a wonderful time on the water. We stopped at the municipal marina just south of the now-finished Bridge of Lions, which looks great all renovated. St. Augustine Municipal Marina has just put in 3 mooring fields, one south of the bridge, one north, and one in Salt Run. We chose the north field and paid for our night at the marina before passing under the bridge ... read more

Contemporary Art Museum of Jacksonville My first target today was the Contemporary Art Museum of Jacksonville. Some people consider it a miracle that this museum exists. Jacksonville is very conservative culturally, so edgy contemporary art is a hard sell. Somehow, it works. The museum is located in an old office building downtown. The building has been renovated to create soaring spaces with white walls and plenty of natural light. Calling the museum “Contemporary” is a bit of a misnomer. It has a permanent collection of modern art that dates back to at least the 1960s. Only a small selection is on view. It is organized thematically. Some of the themes worked better than others. One wall, for example, contained “geometric form”, which is a collection of abstract art that has nothing i... read more

Some of us are lucky to be able to blog and say Happy Holidays to the folks 'away'. (Okay, I know we have put that expression on the opposite foot but you might be 'away' too.) Also, it's time for the get up and go mode after a long hiatus on solid ground. Refitting continues at a brisker pace, while another big Publix bird is roasting in the oven, with sweet potatoes, which are wonderfully plentiful here. We have been lucky to share the company of many terrific people while in Jacksonville. Some have taken us around to see the Christmas sights and lights, a nice way to end the year. After our quest to escape snow, we are flabbergasted to see that people in Florida act as if it is a major part of the ... read more

Woohoo! Dec. 1st is the first day of the boater friendly half year in the south. That doesn't mean there can't be a severe storm, but the chances of the tropical variety are very slim. There haven't been any serious warnings in Florida for weeks. Now we start with the winter gales and chilly (read COLD) weather with wind warnings at night. That's only fair for December. It's strange to have a 60 degree Fahrenheit range,; more continental weather than coastal. We have had weather in the 80's one day and 20's F with hard frost warnings the next night. Hard frost is at least 4 hours below 27F. Considering our Canadian context... we are NOT complaining. Just happy when the sun shines. The diesel stove was lighted for the first time in months this week, ... read more

We're still on the hard with lots to do on the boat but the lists are getting shorter. Sadler Point Marina is a beautiful place with friendly, helpful people, so it's an ideal spot to dodge hurricanes and upgrade your boat. Currently I'm sitting with a blanket over the computer, doing wifi in the boatyard. Not so bad. 80sF during the day and 60s at night. Looking forward to a marine yardsale this coming Saturday where we can 'pass on' a half ton of treasures that we've jettisoned from the boat. Now we have a better idea of what we need and what is superfluous to our current lifestyle. Having the truck has made a huge difference to our present lives. We are able to get supplies, visit people and sort out the things that aren't ... read more

I am starting to call on apartments or en espanol, departamentos. I bought a calling card online - bad choice it sucked my money fast. So I went to a Mecican tienda and bought a tarjeta de llamada, y it was mucho barato and lo tiene mucho minutos. I have been emailing back and forth with this guy who lives in San Diego but has a departamento for rent en San Jose. He tells me to call his sister who speks ingles very well. But when I call on the online money sucking tarjeta de llamada, the connection is so poor, and she does not speak ingles at all. So we are trying to converse on a very static line en espanol. We ended the call with the agreement that I wil call her in three ... read more

Hi everyone- Thanks to those who have decided to follow my blog. This is my first entry. I could have started this blog many years ago when I first decided to move to Mexico. But instead, I'll start here. I am flying out of USA into Mexico for a year abroad in less than 21 days. Wow! What a journey, just to get to this point. My flight reservations have been made but I am having a hard time finding a hostel that allows dogs in Mexico City. Because I am flying in August, the hottest month of the entire year flying from Florida to the coastal desert of Baja California Sur, Mexico, I have been forced to take two early morning flights. The dogs cannot be subject to ground temperatures over 85F on takeoff or ... read more

Well, it looks like our trip to Europe is a go! The flight restrictions were lifted at 5pm EST and I just finished packing. My backpack is incredibly full and I already know I'll be shipping back souvenirs. I was debating whether or not to bring my cowboy boots which take up a lot of space, but I couldn't imagine 1 month without at least 1 cute pair of shoes, so they're packed!! Next blog will be from London (I hope). Wish me luck!... read more

It appears that all along the inspiration and motivation is within ourselves. Sometimes it takes a little push from a friend in order to realize we can do anything we set our minds too. And sometimes it just takes looking within ourselves to realize it was always there, we just had to look a little deeper to find it. So why is change so hard? I suppose I am the type of person that knows I control my own destiny, anything that happens, good or bad, is because of some decision I have made or some action I have taken....so for me, if I set my mind to something then I'll make sure I do it. I guess lately I've just been in a rut that I could not dig my way out of; but ... read more
