Well, we spent four days at the Banana Bungalow, that really isn't much more than a shack on the beach in desperate need of some renovation work as well as a few memeber of staff with a smile. The best thing about it is the location and we did get two days of decent weather. The first night there we decided to drown our sorrows at having left the USA Hostel where we had been spoilt by the staff (Jim & Chris - you are stars!), in fact we ended up calling the manager Jim'll Fix It because there is nothing in San Diego this man cannot arrange. Anyway, lucky for us a group of US Marines turned up with the entertainment...and taught us the rules of Beer Pong - basically throwing ping pong balls into ... read more

We're in San Diego, visiting Brian's sister, just about ready to leave tomorrow to cross the border. And very excited to do this at last. Here's what we've been up to: Monday we got some electrical things checked out on the bus, got the temporary registration permit at DMV (closest thing shy of passing smog, which is out of the question), and crossed out a record-breaking amout of items off our many lists of to-do's. Tuesday we made some last-minute modifications to the bus, packed and left. Brian managed to leave his passport in a drawer, safely at home. On our way out of town and starving, we decided to get burritos and a couple margaritas (at Cactus Cafe, of course). Before leaving the parking lot, the muffler fell completley off the back of the bus! ... read more

After meeting the Welsh guys (previous blog) they told us that they were going down to San Diego which is where we headed so we could meet up have a few nights out. After a rather strange train journey in which there was no food on the train and not enough seats we arrived in San Diego with no idea where the hostel was that the guys from wales had recommended called the Banana Bungalow (strange name but it was a yellow hostel). After a tram journey and a bus journey we managed to stumble upon it by accident by this time gone 9pm at night and we had been traveling all day and were pretty damn tired. As soon as we get there Barry walks over wearing a dress so me and Kim both start ... read more

We go to pick up a car for the following 2 weeks of our trip in the States, it turns out to be one of them Chrysler PT Cruisers which looks a bit funky from the front and like a funeral hearse from the back. It was kind of cool for a rental but like all good American cars, it was wallowy, heavy, and handled like a bucket of custard. We decided not to go Las Vegas today, so booked another night in the hostel and took the car for a spin up the coast to Pacific Beach to check out some beautiful views of the coastline and admire the posh houses overlooking the ocean. That evening we ate at the free barbecue provided by the hostel.... read more

One of the most interesting things to observe about Californian Beach culture is the way that so many people there watch religiously as the sun goes down on an evening. Admittedly the sunset on Pacific Beach is pretty cool and a really great sight to clap ones eyes on, but whats bizarre is the fact that when the sun finally goes down many of the people who are watching applaud the sun for doing so. Then its as if they are expecting it to come up again for an encore (but it never does, which is surprising because you'd think the sun would want to give more to its audience. Most of the days in San Diego have been spent on the beach, which is something that happens on many holidays, but this is unusual for ... read more

In the San Diego hostel i was in a room with 12 other people, a mix of nationalities and of males and females. I don't mind this actually and it can be o.k. to spend nights in rooms of many people. Anyway, what proved to be a problem here is that i was on a top bunk and on the bunk below me were a guy and a girl (both of whom resided at the hostel, he worked there and she was..er..well, i dunno actually, but she seemed to get off with a lot of guys, not just this guy). From my first night there, the bunk was shaking and shaking because the two of them were, well..you know on the bunk below me. Now i've no problem with people having sex when they want, but ... read more

The hostel in San Diego was located right on Pacific Beach, which was good because even at this time of the year the temperatures in southern California average about 28 degrees celsius. So what we encountered was several days of blazing heat on a beach, which is good of course. Looking out on to the beach what you always see is loads of surfers, some great some not so great and others completely unable to do it. But it seems like surfing is a part of the life of almost everyone who lives in the vicinity, not to mention the many holiday makers who go there all the time. It seemed obvious that we should give surfing a try, and on the Tuesday that we were there a bunch of us (the guys mentioned in the ... read more

I've heard many stories about how people hook up with other travellers on these round the world trips. Prior to this past few weeks we have met a number of people but havn't significantly hooked up with any of them because they have only been part of our lives very briefly, but recently we have had much more significant hook ups. I have to say that i should not take any credit for this, all the credit goes to Elaine who unlike me is a very sociable and outgoing person, she also smiles a lot (the exact opposite of me) so its because of her that this has happened. The first significant person we have hooked up with is a guy called Jeff, hes from Vancouver and we met him in San Francisco, after ironically having ... read more

After all my plans to travel in the deep, dark, depths of Mexico, I know find myself relaxing in sunny San Diego at Pacific Beach. I spent two nights in an average Hostel and moved to the Banana Bungalow this morning. It has a sweet location right on the beach and Keg Parties every night. It was sad to say goodbye to my two new friends, Ali and Robie, but I know that adventure lies ahead for all of us! I am sure we will meet up soon. I had grown a little weary of life on the road and the sweltering Mexican heat. Whilst, my reasons for travelling are to see the world, I also want to get stuck into some more active pursuits. I will now stay put in San Diego for a while. ... read more
